Newsletter 16
12th January 2018
Welcome back and Happy New Year!
We are pleased to welcome our new Nursery children and their families who
started this week. The new children are all settling really well into the routines
and we have been very impressed with how the older Foundation Stage children
have been looking after them and even reassuring them that their grown up will
be coming back later!
Class Newsletters
Class newsletters are being sent home today. These give you an outline of the skills and knowledge that
your child will be learning this half term.
Staffing
Welcome to staff who have joined us this term:
Miss Aspinall has enjoyed her first week with Class 2; Mrs Gaimster, who was volunteering in Foundation
last term, has now joined us as one of our Foundation support staff and After School Club staff and we
welcome back Mr Hammond who did a teaching placement with us last year and has returned for his final
placement working in Class 3 this term.
Fairtrade
This week the Fairtrade action group held a special assembly encouraging the whole school to "make a
difference" and help our global community. They asked the classes to make a New Year resolution to
consider buying Fairtrade when possible. They described how buying Fairtrade products gave producers a
fairer income and protected workers’ rights. They also explained how the Fairtrade premium helped
communities and that the Fairtrade Foundation advises farmers on farming in a way to protect the
environment.
The children asked for a commitment from Mrs Jolly to use Fairtrade sugar and cocoa all the time.
The group will now to hold a Fairtrade lunch with special activities. Well Done to the group for organising
and presenting their assembly.
PFA (Parents and Friends Association)
The PFA will be meeting at the Bingley Arms this Monday, 15th January at 6.30pm to review their past
events and start planning for the next . Everyone is welcome to join them. If you are unable to come along
or if it’s just not your thing please would you spend just a couple of minutes answering their survey:

Epiphany
This week in assembly, Father Christopher explained the
significance of Epiphany (6th January) as a celebration of the 3
wise men visiting Jesus. Foundation children watched him as
he blessed the school for the New Year in the traditional way
of using chalk to write above the entrance, 20 + C + M + B +
18. The letters C, M, B have two meanings. They are the
initials of the three wise men: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar.
They also abbreviate the Latin words Christus mansionem
benedicat, “May Christ bless the house.” The “+” signs
represent the cross and 2018 is the year. Look out for this the
next time you come into school or watch the video:

Class News
Foundation Stage
What a busy week we have had! Everyone has enjoyed getting to know
our new nursery children and all of the older children have being
amazing at helping them to settle in; we are all very proud. Every day
this week the ‘magical story box’ has made an appearance, bringing us a
selection of traditional tales to read. Sprinkling the magic story dust
made some of the characters come to life and we were so pleased when
they stayed to read the books to us.
On Monday we will be celebrating our new theme of traditional tales by
encouraging the children to dress up as their favourite character from
one of these books. The children will have a fun morning of completing
activities such baking troll biscuits, building the three little pigs houses
and making masks. We can't wait to see all of their homemade outfits! Miss Painter, Mrs Lovell, Mrs Stearne, Mrs Thompson, Mrs Gaimster
Class 1
This week Class 1 have started their new book – ‘Rosie
Revere, Engineer’. We have learnt what an engineer is and
have researched some famous engineers and the
inventions they created. We then became engineers
ourselves, after being set the challenge of constructing
something using only wine gums and cocktail sticks! We
had lots of fun using our imagination and being creative –
we think we are going to enjoy being engineers this half
term! Miss Schofield, Mrs Ross
Class 2
What an eventful week it has been! First, the children had
to apply for jobs at Private Investigations Ltd! After
receiving correspondence from a concerned mother
regarding her missing daughter they got straight to work
trying to figure out the next steps they must take to solve
the mystery. On top of all this hard work, the children have
begun to uncover the secrets of the Chinese Shang Dynasty
in history and made enquiries about different states of
matter in science! Miss Aspinall, Miss Riley, Mrs Brammer
Class 3
Class 3 have had a great start back after the holidays and have worked
incredibly hard in all subjects.
We have been measuring angles in maths and thinking about our value of
perseverance and our goals for this year. As well as this, on Wednesday,
we had a science day where we were looking at lifecycles of living things.
The children investigated different species groups such as mammals,
reptiles and amphibians and also found out about parts of plants and
ways that seeds are dispersed. Mrs Findlay, Mrs Callaghan, Mr Hammond
