As we head into March, we are preparing for the next round of parent teacher conferences. Next week sign-up sheets will be coming home for you to indicate your preferred conference times. Please be sure to fill in your choices and return the form back to the school right away so that your child’s teacher can set the schedule and get the times out to all parents. This past month Beautiful Plains School Division brought in Dr. Peg Dawson for a day of professional development for teachers, as well as a special parent session in the evening. The main topic that Dr. Dawson spoke about was “executive skills”. Executive skills include things such as getting organized, staying focused, and controlling impulses and emotions. Dr. Dawson talked about the 10 principles that can help guide children as they grow and develop, as well as specific strategies to help children develop specific executive skills. It was an enlightening day which helped develop our understanding of kids who we know have the ability, but seem to have trouble putting it all together to find the success we know they are capable of. If you are interested in learning more about executive skills, the resource section of Dr. Dawson’s website is: https://www.smartbutscatteredkids.com/media/resources/print- articles/. The HMK library also has a copy of Dr. Dawson’s book “Smart but Scattered” that can be signed out by parents. Our entire staff would like to thank the Parent Council and all parents for the tremendous lunches that were provided during Teacher Appreciation Month! All four Tuesdays in February saw a huge variety of main courses, treats, and goodies brought in for staff to enjoy. We were overwhelmed once again by the support that parents continue to show for the school. From our entire staff we would like to offer a heartfelt thank you. We are privileged to work in a community that shows such tremendous support for education. Thank you for all that you do to support the children as they continue to grow and develop academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. We look forward to working with you to provide the best learning environment that we can for your children!

Kindergarten Registration for the 2020-21 School Year We have had many families already register their child for kindergarten in the fall. If you have not yet done this, please come to the school office. Kindergarten this fall is for students born in 2015. When coming to register your child for kindergarten, please bring his or her birth certificate, as well as any immigration documents that you have.

“I Love to Read” at HMK Throughout the month of February, the HMK “I Love to Read” committee had various events organized to promote and make reading fun. This year’s theme was “books for a Better World”. There was an opening assembly, Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) times, “Read Around the World”, Caring Cubs Day, Wear Pink or Red Day, HMK Saves the World Day, guest readers including the Neepawa Natives, a book swap, and a closing assembly. It was a great month promoting reading! We would like to thank the committee for organizing all of these fabulous reading activities and events!

Grade 4 After School Basketball Our grade 4 students had the opportunity to participate in a voluntary after school basketball program which was run by Mrs. Douglas and Mr. Freeman. The kids had lots of fun, and also had the opportunity to continue to develop their basketball

skills. It was awesome to see how their skills developed from session to session! Thank you to Mrs. Douglas and Mr. Freeman for volunteering their time for the grade 4 students!

The Count’s Corner: Never Give Up

Did you know everyone around you - including friends, teachers and

parents - have some things that are difficult for them? It’s true!

Everyone faces challenges every day. But when you have a Never

Give Up attitude, you don’t give up on things just because they are

hard. Whether you’re learning to tie your shoes, trying to make a new

friend, or solving a math problem, stick with it and try, try again. It’s

OK to make mistakes - it is part of learning! Everyone makes

mistakes, even famous people like Thomas Edison. He’s the inventor

of the light bulb. Before any of his light bulbs actually worked, he built over 1,000 models

that didn’t work. He did not give up, he kept learning from his

mistakes until he succeeded at making a light bulb that actually

gave off light! When a news reporter asked him, “How did it

feel to fail 1000 times?” Edison replied, “I didn’t fail 1000

times. The light bulb was an invention with 1000 steps.” So

if you fail at something, remember to never give up and think of

each try as getting you one step closer to success. Remember

to never, ever, ever give up on yourself!
