19th CenturyThe invention of the

meat grinder gave rise to the hamburger.

Early 1900sThe hamburger was thought to be polluted, unsafe to eat,

and food for the poor.

1921White Castle opened the first hamburger

chain, selling burgers for 5¢

1940sCurb service

mobilized when carhops strapped on roller skates.

1949Richard & Maurice McDonald opened

the first McDonald’s restaurant.

1949Arby’s was created by Forrest & Leroy

Raffel.

1956Carl Karcher launched

Carl’s Jr., a mini version of his other

restaurant.

1965Subway was established.

1967High-fructose corn syrup appears in fast foods. This

tricks your body into wanting to eat more & to

store more fat.

contain over 200 calories• You would have to walk for 7 hrs straight to burn off a

Super Sized Coke, fry, and Big Mac• On top of these fatty foods, the portions being served are

gradually increasing• Grade D meat is sometimes used in the products

• Fast food threatens our environment• Negative effects of fast food on our health include: • Cardiovascular disease• Cancer• Liver disease• Asthma

• Proportion distortion• Too many chemicals • Factory farms

Troubles Ahead

• If we don’t fix this problem, we could see about a 9% increase of medical expenditures: $147 billion

• If we do fix this problem of obesity, then we would be able to save: +$ 549.5 billion in medical related expenditures

• By 2030, the number of Americans with heart diseases from obesity is expected to increase up to 40%.

• Obesity is expected to soon surpass smoking as the leading cause of preventable death in the United States.

High Tax

• High Tax on fast food = less consumption

• For example, a Sin Tax is placed on unhealthy items such as tobacco and alcohol.

• The same can be used on fast food to combat obesity.• People like fast food because its cheap.• Force people to think more on their choices• Junk food is much cheaper then healthy food today, this tax

can lower the cost of healthy food

Get rid of Drive-Through

• Many consumers eat fast food because of its convenience.

• According to chain lunch magazine, 40.5% of fast food customers use drive through.

• By getting rid of drive-through, it will make fast food less convenient so there will be less consumption• provide a mini exercise to the store

Conclusion

The over consumption of fast food is a growing problem in America. However, by enlightenment and small government intervention, we can save the lives of countless people and establish a healthier future.
