America Loves Fast Food
• 1 in 4 Americans visit a fast food restaurant daily• McDonald’s feeds more than 46 mil. people a day• Fast food industry generates a total revenue of nearly $200
bil. a year• Out of 101 items on the McDonald’s menu, 74 of them
contain over 200 calories• You would have to walk for 7 hrs straight to burn off a
Super Sized Coke, fry, and Big Mac• On top of these fatty foods, the portions being served are
gradually increasing• Grade D meat is sometimes used in the products
Current Problems
• Fast food threatens our environment• Negative effects of fast food on our health include: • Cardiovascular disease• Cancer• Liver disease• Asthma
• Proportion distortion• Too many chemicals • Factory farms
• Type-2 diabetes• Sleep apnea• Chronic illnesses
Our Possible Future
Troubles Ahead
• If we don’t fix this problem, we could see about a 9% increase of medical expenditures: $147 billion
• If we do fix this problem of obesity, then we would be able to save: +$ 549.5 billion in medical related expenditures
• By 2030, the number of Americans with heart diseases from obesity is expected to increase up to 40%.
• Obesity is expected to soon surpass smoking as the leading cause of preventable death in the United States.
The Solution
Cut Down our Consumption by Discouraging the Public
1. Enlighten people2. High tax3. Get rid of drive-through
Enlighten people
• [Previous slides]
• Tell your friends
High Tax
• High Tax on fast food = less consumption
• For example, a Sin Tax is placed on unhealthy items such as tobacco and alcohol.
• The same can be used on fast food to combat obesity.• People like fast food because its cheap.• Force people to think more on their choices• Junk food is much cheaper then healthy food today, this tax
can lower the cost of healthy food
Get rid of Drive-Through
• Many consumers eat fast food because of its convenience.
• According to chain lunch magazine, 40.5% of fast food customers use drive through.
• By getting rid of drive-through, it will make fast food less convenient so there will be less consumption• provide a mini exercise to the store
Conclusion
The over consumption of fast food is a growing problem in America. However, by enlightenment and small government intervention, we can save the lives of countless people and establish a healthier future.
