PROGRAMMENOTESFranzJosephHaydn(1732–1809)TheCreationHaydnwitnessedmanyradicalchangesinmusicduringthecourseofhislonglife.Hewas18whenBachdiedin1750,notlongbeforethecloseoftheBaroqueera,and72whenBeethoven’sEroicaSymphonywasfirstperformedin1804,usheringintheRomanticperiod.Oldformsofmusicweresupersededbythesymphony,sonataandstringquartet,patronagemovedfromthechurchtotheroyalcourt,andpublicconcertswererapidlybecomingimmenselypopular.Throughoutallthesechanges,Haydnremainedapioneeringfigure.Othercomposershadwrittensymphonies,sonatasandstringquartetsbeforehim,butitwasHaydnwhofirstexploitedtheuntappedpotentialoftheseforms,expandinganddevelopingthemtoahithertounimagineddegree.ThealmostchildlikecheerfulnessofHaydn’smusic,itsinexhaustibleinventivenessanditsperfectionofdesignconcealaconsiderable

innerstrength.Thisfusionofexuberance,originality,classicaleleganceandintellectualpowerexplainstoalargeextentthecompellingappealofhismusic.ThesearethequalitiesthatplacedHaydnfarandawayabovethelevelofallexceptMozartamongsthiscontemporaries,andkepthimattheforefrontofmusicduringmostofthe18thcentury.NowonderhewashailedasageniusthroughoutEurope,admiredandreveredbythepublicandbyhispeers.Mozartsaidthat‘Haydnalonehasthesecretbothofmakingmesmileandoftouchingmyinnermostsoul’.EvenNapoleon,oncapturingVienna,immediatelyorderedaguardofhonourtobeplacedaroundHaydn’shouse.Formuchofhislife,Haydn’senergiesweredevotedprimarilytocomposingorchestralandinstrumentalmusic.Thesupremechoralmasterpiecesofhisoldage–TheCreation,TheSeasonsandthesixlastgreatmasses,includingthewell-knownNelsonMass–wereallcomposedafter1795,theyearinwhichhecompletedthelastofhis104symphonies.

Theoratorioasamusicalformappearedbrieflyin17th-centuryItaly,butwassooneclipsedbythemuchmorepopularoperas.ItwasHandelwhoresurrectedtheoratoriofromobscurity,transformingitfromlittlemorethananextendedcantataintoapowerfulchoralmusic-dramathatwassoontodominatepublicmusic-makingin18thand19thcenturyEngland.ThesuccessionofmasterpiecesthatHandelwroteinspiredmanylatercomposers,notablyHaydnandMendelssohn.DuringhisfirstvisittoLondon,HaydnattendedoneofthegreatHandelfestivalsheldinWestminsterAbbeyandwascompletelyoverwhelmedbytheexperience,asaresultofwhichheresolvedtowriteanoratoriohimselfthatwouldbeworthyofHandel’ssupremeexamples.In1796,inspiredbywhathehadheardwhilstinLondon,Haydnsettoworkonthescore,whichwasnotcompleteduntil1798,bywhichtimehewas66.‘IwasneversodevoutasduringthattimewhenIwasworkingonTheCreation,’heobserved.Theworkreceiveditsfirstpublicperformancein1799andwasimmediatelyrecognisedasasuprememasterpiece,receivingmanyperformancesalloverEurope.Incommonwithopera,andlikemostoratorios–althoughnotMessiah–TheCreationhasnamedcharactersandisdividedintoactsandscenes.Theseconsistofsequencesofchoruses,recitativesandarias.Theworkbeginswithanextendedorchestralintroduction,‘RepresentationofChaos’.PartsIandIIthendescribethesixdaysofCreation,eachofwhichfollowsathreefoldpatterncomprisingbiblicalnarrative,descriptivecentralsectionandhymnofpraise.ThethreesoloistsrepresentthearchangelsGabriel(soprano),Uriel(tenor)andRaphael(bass),withthechorusfulfillinganimportantroleportrayingangelsglorifyingtheirmaker.PartIIIisdevotedentirelytotheappearanceofAdamandEve(bassandsoprano),whosingofthewonderandperfectionofGod’snewlycreatedworldandoftheirhappinesstogether.Soloistsandchoircombineforthefinalupliftingchorusofpraise.

ca1805)(1791)TheCreationrepresentsaconsiderabledramaticdevelopmentoveritsHandelianpredecessors.Haydn’sbolduseoforchestralcolour,hisadventurousharmony,exceptionalrhythmicandmelodicinventiveness,andthework’sstrongoverallunitybringthesubjecttolifewithanalmostoperaticvividnessandpower.TheopeningisagoodillustrationofHaydn’sinnovativeapproach.Theextendedorchestralintroduction,itselfadeparturefromtheconventionaloverture,isentitled‘RepresentationofChaos’andimmediatelyarreststhelistener’sattentionwithitsshifting,ambiguousharmoniesonmutedstrings,brassandtimpani.IntheensuingrecitativeRaphaeltellsusthat‘theearthwaswithoutform,andvoid’andthisisreflectedinthesparseemptinessoftheorchestralaccompaniment.Thechoircontinuesinamoodofhushedstillness,until‘andtherewaslight’,atwhichpointthereisasudden,massivefortissimochordofCmajorfromthenowunmutedfullorchestra.Evenafter200yearstheeffectisstillimmenselypowerful.Itwasevidentlytotallyoverwhelmingatthetime,judgingbythefollowingaccountfromoneofHaydn’sfriends:‘...andatthatmomentwhenlightbrokeoutforthefirst

time,onewouldhavesaidthatraysdartedfromthecomposer’sburningeyes.TheenchantmentoftheelectrifiedViennesewassogeneralthattheorchestracouldnotproceedforsomeminutes’.Thisisperhapsthemoststartlingdramaticgestureofthewholework,butthereareplentyofotherequallyeffectiveinstancesofmusicalword-painting,suchasthestormscenes,thewonderfulsunrisemusicandthecolourfuldepictionofvariousanimalsandbirds.ItisalsoworthdrawingattentiontoHaydn’smusicalcharacterisation.Fortheangelsheadoptsasomewhatflorid,loftystyle,whilstforAdamandEvethewritingissimplerandmorefolk-like.Infact,thewholeworksparkleswiththevitalityandunfailinginspirationsocharacteristicofthisremarkablecomposer,whowasstillexperimentingandstillsurprisinghisdelightedaudiencesrightuptotheendofhislife.
