Vertical lines
represent a
structural
element that
easily draws the
eye up and
down. When
used they can
give a geometric
and symmetrical
shape.

Horizontal LinesHorizontal lines draw the eye across a room or space. Horizontal lines can
help a smaller space appear larger and wider. Be cautious though because
horizontal lines can also have a shortening affect. In the space pictured they
used various long horizontal lines to create a wide and spacious looking
seating area.

Angular Lines
Angular lines can be very
useful in certain spaces.
They act as a good
specialized transitioning line
moving the eye in a pre-
designed line. Angular lines
can also be used as a focal
point in a room they can
add excitement to an
otherwise boring room but if
used to much they can look
busy and be overwhelming.

Curved
Line
Curved lines
help carry your
eye gracefully
from one side to
another. A
series of curved
lines adds
rhythm and
easy decor to a
space.

Sketch
Tightly Curved
Tightly curved lines are an easy
way to add décor to a space
however an over usage could
begin to disrupt the design and
start to look tacky. Tightly curved
lines are best used sparingly as an
element of design.

Monochromatic ColorMonochromatic color is the variation of chroma and value in one hue. This
color scheme can be difficult to employ in design because a space can easily
be overcome by the specific color or become very dull and boring. It is
important when using the monochromatic color scheme that you vary the
chroma and value and that you break up the color with neutrals, such as
white or tan.
![Page 7: hayden](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022020322/568c34c61a28ab023591b685/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Neutral Color
Neutral color schemes have always been very popular in design.
There are two types of neutral color schemes, true neutrals, which
include blacks, whites, and grays, and new neutrals, which cover
your browns and beiges. Neutral colors while popular and practical
can be very drab, it is important that with neutral colors you have
other points of interests such as pattern and shape.

Unity through
ColorA unifying color can be very
important when you have
many different items in a
space. If a room has many
different shapes and patterns
the design can look sloppy.
You will need a common color
to bring harmony to the room
and unify the otherwise
unique objects. For example
in the kitchen photographed
the appliances are brought
together with the cabinetry
thanks to the same color
wood and finish. Bringing a
sense of harmony and
togetherness to the space.

Focal Point Structural
,, A structural focal point is a key
part in a space’s design. The
structural focus is already
apart of the space and
naturally draws the eye.
Because it is already it own
emphasis you must be careful
not to crowd the strucure or
the space around it as it may
draw attention away from the
focal point and make a room
to busy. The bar at hotel Indigo
does a great job of letting the
bar be its own emphasis and
not adding clutter and making
it busy.
