CHAIRMAN’S REPORT//By Ian Elmsly

Well, it seems like only yesterday that my last report was done, and in reality, time is flying in these strange times. Firstly I hope you are all well and have survived the “lockdown” period. No doubt most are wanting to get back out there and have some normality back in life, and the events of the past few days have at least started to allow things to start opening up. As I write this report we are moving within the committee to get the Club open and by the time the MAG is distributed hopefully some of you will have already been able to visit the clubrooms!

One of the benefits of the lockdown should have been that projects requiring “time” have now been completed and just maybe there will be a few cars find their way back onto the road! Or is this just wishful thinking and the “time” thing still remains an excuse (perhaps I should ask the ladies?)

Sadly during the lockdown period one of our long standing members, Noel Powell, passed away, and it was with sadness we hear this news. As a relative newbie in the club, I was always made feel welcome by Noel and he was never short of advice when you asked him about the old car.

As we move forward and with some hope move out of the restrictions of Covid19, we are reopening the Clubrooms. You will have now seen the newsletter distributed on the 29th May outlining what and when the re-open proceeds. We have started with the Tuesday mornings followed by a Club Run on Sunday 14th June and the first Club Meeting on the 8th July. Please note that the AGM has been postponed and we are looking to reschedule this for the 9th September. All current committee members are prepared to continue through until this date, and those members have all advised that they are prepared to stand for re-election. The only changes are that Esther Smith has advised she is stepping down from the Club Captains role and myself who under the club constitution must resign from the office of Chairman. I will of course be required to continue on Committee as immediate past Chairman. Details of the rescheduled AGM will be advised ensuring adequate notice is given.

So, lets get on with normality (if that is possible!) and get the historical vehicles to once again grace our roads, enjoy mixing and mingling (but be mindful of social distancing) and have some FUN.

Page 7: Hawke’s Bay Branch Newsletter THE MAGhbvcc.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/HBVCC_June2020.pdf · 2020-06-09 · Kevin McGrath p. 06 844 7626 kevinmcgrath@xtra.co.nz Steve Trott (Jo) p.

7May 2020

It looks like the branch will be able to resume normal operations in the very near future. Amongst the committee there has been much deliberation as to when we would open and what measures we needed to have in place to comply with the ever changing restrictions. When we decided that it would be possible to put on a Club run in June, my mind went blank in regard to what we could do or where we could go, usually I have a forward plan in place and a few spares ideas just in case. Anyway the brain cells kicked back in and we now have a plan in place so come along and join us on Sunday June the 14th.

It’s a chance to give the car a run and catch up with everyone. Full details are elsewhere in the MAG

After nearly seven weeks at home I am now back at work in the office, I miss getting my morning coffee and biscuit delivered to my desk, though I think Graham is quite pleased to have his space and quite life back. We both got thoroughly tired of the Skype call tone, as that was the way my work colleagues kept in touch and some days it could be incessant, I would have to warn Graham when an important meeting was booked so that he didn’t start up the grinder or some other noisy piece of equipment. We also used to have the four grandchildren up to our shed “apartment” for afternoon tea, this was to give our daughter a break and to give the children a change of scene, but with four little ones aged between 5 and 2 in our small space it could be quite chaotic.

When level 3 was announced our builders wasted no time in getting back on site, the

build has progressed well and when the decisions you are making are about where the best location for the toilet roll holder is, then you know it is nearly all over, hopefully only another couple of weeks.

There was a momentous happening during lockdown as per the last MAG, Graham completed the fitout of our 1972 Renault 16 TS, it is all warranted and the rego taken off hold, so now we will have to give it an outing on the next club run. The fitout of our 1935 Humber continuous at a leisurely pace as pieces are discovered and fitted, the luggage rack was fitted during the lockdown Graham required some particular bolts to do this and he had fair idea that there would be some in spares the great dilemma was how to get them, however he adapted some he had so we didn’t need to declare an emergency and break the bubble after all.

We were very sorry to hear of Noel Powell’s death on the 12th of May, he had enjoyed participating in club events and was fortunate that in later years his son Phillip continued to bring him along so he could participate in club outings. Noel had been a good friend of our family for many years and he was always interested to hear what our children and grandchildren were up to, Graham had kept in touch with him during the lockdown and as soon as it was over we had planned to bring Noel out here to show him progress on the house. We will very much miss his company, his ready sense of humour and his presence in our lives. Check out the details of future events elsewhere in the MAG and I look forward to catching up with you all soon.

SAFARI 2020 23rd, 25th, 25th, 26th, October 2020.

Safari this year will be based in Taupo.

We have pencilled a motel large enough to accommodate us all for the nights of, 23rd, 24th, 25th, of October 2020.

As the drive to Taupo is not a very long run, the Saturday run will be of an equivalent distance. Sunday will be mainly a short radius of Taupo.

At this stage we have evening meals organised for the Saturday and Sunday nights. This year we have to pay in advance, [one payment] and will have to pay for the number of persons that we book for, therefore there will be no refunds if you change your mind at the last minute. We trust that you will honour this arrangement so that we can remain as a group.

There will also be two entry fees of $5.00 p/p.

We will notify the entrants of the meal costs at a later date.

MESSAGE TO MEMBERS//

I have been asked to convey to members of the VCC the sad news that one of our number, Noel Powell, passed away this morning Tuesday 15 May. His family regret that due to the Covid 19 lock down they are unable to have more than 10 mourners and will be having a family only funeral. Noel’s family are very aware that he has many friends from many walks of life and they are keen to celebrate his life with them. They will therefore organise a memorial get together at the Meeanee Speedway at a later date when the lifting of the lock down makes it possible. I would like also to pass on the thanks of Noel’s family to all those people who have kept in touch with him over the past few years and helped him stay within the community and to enjoy the last of his life and the friendship of so many. The Man.Noel will be well known to many. He has been a long time member of the VCC who was very active within the branch and was well known throughout the vintage car movement. In early years he restored and motored a C1928 Chrysler and in slightly later years he campaigned his well known 1938 maroon Desoto sedan and his much loved 1938 two tone green Desoto coupe. He was a great supporter of the monthly Friday meal nights at the HBVCC club rooms and was always keen to attend club meetings. He loved the VCC picnic runs and seldom missed the cruise ship displays. He remained active within the club until very recently. Noel was a friendly person with a cheeky wit who was always willing pull someone’s leg. He was always happy to help anyone who needed help. He was a foundation member of the NZ Chrysler club and was a long time member of the Stock Car Club who some years ago awarded him a life membership as a sign of their appreciation for all the years he worked so tirelessly for them in so many capacities. Noel was also well known in the building industry having worked as a brick layer most of his working life.Bruce McKechnie.
