7April 2019

How time fly’s! Having just had a couple of weeks R&R it seems like only yesterday that I was writing the February report (yes I know you all read it!!) and it has been a busy month, having been AWOL on a trek around the Marlborough Sounds area.

March saw us host the North Island Club Captain Tour (minus the North island Club Captain due unfortunately to illness) as we joined this group for the March Run followed by a BBQ dinner at the Clubrooms for some 80 people (sadly mostly visitors!). Feedback from the group was very positive as they all tucked into a good meal and enjoyed the surroundings. The clean-up was made easy with the Dishwasher / steriliser which is certainly proving its worth.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT//By Ian Elmsly

The six-monthly Exec Meeting was held on the 23rd March with Past Chairman Steve Donovan representing us in my absence. Thanks Steve and we will get an update from you at the next meeting.

The Monthly Kitchen nights are back in full swing under the watchful eye of Malcolm & Lesley Blair and with numbers holding up these nights are proving a hit. We will also have the wrap up from Art Deco at the next Club Night as we complete the paperwork and review as to how successful it was.

Look forward to seeing you all shortly.

Happy Motoring.

7April 2019

Our March run was held on Sunday the 10th of March, which enabled us to meet up with the NI Club Captains tour entrants who were travelling down from Taupo. We then hosted the 69 entrants and some local members to a barbecue at the clubrooms.

When hosting these type of events for other branches and clubs all profits go back to the branch, so many thanks to Malcolm and Lesley Blair also Ian and Kay Elmsly for the work they put into the planning and cooking.

This run seems like ages ago now, as the very next day Graham and I set out in the 29 Chev on a 1000km tour of the top of the South Island along with a few other hardy souls. The car behaved itself, considering its age and what it was asked to do. We were on D’Urville Island when we heard of the shooting in Christchurch, so it will be one of those times that stick in your mind. When we got back to French Pass the car naturally caused a lot of interest and gave rise to some odd questions; one visitor asked incredulously if it would really be able to get back up the hill, which I will admit was a mighty climb, but in reality would you bring the car down if you were not reasonably confident/hopeful that you would get back up. The later climb (each way) over the Takaha hill was even more of a challenge, but the Chev took it all in its stride.

Talking of the kitchen the new super duper commercial dishwasher which was installed in time for Art Deco is winning praise all round. It does a wash in less than five minutes, the machine gives the dishes a final rinse in very hot water which means they then self-dry, therefore no more sodden tea towels and a great time saving, what more could you ask for!

Speaking of which the old domestic style dishwasher is up for tender, refer elsewhere in the MAG for details.

Our April run will be held on Sunday the 14th of April, it will be an interesting run and there is an opportunity to go for a meal afterwards this run is been organised by Lesley and Malcolm Blair

HOOTERS//Ana @ Hooters

Hi Folks,

When last we spoke we were preparing for our biggest gig of all time to date and 15 Hooters cars lined up and left the showroom in convoy to collect our guests from Elephant Hill.

All 15 cars made the journey and delivered our guests on time to Cape Kidnappers.

Sadly, only 14 cars made it home unassisted!

That’s right one of our most reliable cars ‘Rene’ the 1953 Citroen did a brilliant job of delivering our guests to the Cape before heading up to the top car park to turn around and make the descent. Clearly she decided that it was all too much stress for the universal joint. David to the rescue and a daring recovery with our truck and trailer saw ‘Rene’ arrive home an hour later and straight into the workshop for our Steve D.

That Cape Kidnappers driveway is a stunning drive but certainly takes it out of the old gals!

The rest of the month has kept us busy working lots of cruise ships, static display’s and of course the first of the Autumn season weddings.

The end of the 2018/2019 season is drawing to a close with the last few ships and the last of the summer holiday-makers visiting in the next month or so. In a matter of weeks it will all be over and the planning for 2019/2020 season starts ramping up.

With each new season we have to make changes and adjust and improve our offerings. To ensure we offer what the

customers are wanting and of course adapt to make sure that we showcase the Region and all it’s best assets. To do this we need to take the time to head out and explore the offerings. It’s a tough job but someone had to do it!

This winter we have decided to sell off a few of the fleet to make space for the two project cars (The Studebaker and the Hupmobile ‘Annie’) to step up and join the fleet so here’s a few pics of the cars currently on offer if you fancy a new toy:

Well that’s it for another month, be seeing you…

MARCH CLUB RUN//

Sunday 10th March dawned fine and cloudy in Napier but once we turned onto the Taupo road we could see that it was not going to last. Sure enough rain, low cloud, horse trucks and floats by the dozen heading towards Napier were upon us. Unfortunately the Waitara Road sign was nowhere to be seen which then made us doubt that we had turned onto the right road. The old fashioned way of checking our route i.e. a map had been left at home!! Electronic maps etc were not invented when our cars were manufactured, so must keep directions authentic to the era!! After much discussion we agreed to turn back to check. So over the Mohaka bridge, about turn and yes, it was the correct road. In drizzly to real rain we assembled at the DOC site to await those on the NICC run coming from Taupo. It was disappointing that so few of our members made the trip which was a good run albeit wet (at times) with very muddy roads. Surely there must be others joining us I asked? VCC members are made of sterner stuff I thought!

Back on the road again passing the Bellbird Bush Reserve (far too wet and drippy to stop) as a rule the views would be spectacular but low cloud prevented this. Lunch stop was

at the Tutira School were lunch had been organised for the tour group who were seated under cover on the decks. By now the rain had cleared and we sat in lovely sunshine to enjoy our lunch. Unfortunately this did not last long and sure enough we saw the tell tale mist approaching across the paddocks. A hurried pack up as rain started to fall – again – and with that we departed for home. Being a tad damp we whimped out by taking the easy way back via the main road.

I have it on good authority that the afternoon run along Waipunga/Darky Spur/Kaiwaka Roads were enjoyed by all. By then the rain had cleared so the fantastic views from these roads could be enjoyed. Luckily the roads were not nearly so muddy which made motoroing more pleasant. Joining the main Road at Eskdale it was then smooth driving into town.

Once again an enjoyable way to spend a Sunday with like minded people.

MOTORING//

The first Peking to Paris race ran in 1907, with five competitors accepting the seemingly impossible challenge of driving those early cars a massive 13,840km.

Among those few early pioneers was a French three-wheeled Mototri Contal piloted by an ambitious duo, Frenchmen Auguste Pons and Oscar Foucauld, who would amazingly and unfortunately go on to be the only competitors to not finish the race, which would see them, and their three-wheeler, stranded in the Gobi Desert and attempting to walk back to Peking, almost losing their lives in the process.

But although the original car is still buried under the desert sands, one man is determined to finish what Pons and Foucauld 112 years later.

Perched over the front axle, Oscar Foucauld's navigator's seat was a slightly terrifying place to be.Inspired by the story that almost cost the pair their lives, Belgian architect Anton Gonnissen set about acquiring and restoring an original Mototri Contal.

He eventually found one of the very few Mototri Contal's left in the world together with its original manual and following

a structural test by Ghent University in Belgium, some improvements were made to the chassis, wheels and engine.

With more than 13,000km with no rear suspension and a very basic saddle, it was never going to be comfortable for Auguste Pons.As with the original Mototri Contal, there is no rear suspension at all and just crude springs on the front. The navigator sits over the front axle perched out front in what was christened the "suicide seat".

The brave navigator in that seat perched out front as Foucauld was all those years ago will be Belgian Herman Gelan, an accomplished triathlon and marathon runner in his first motor sport event.

Gonnissen will be behind him steering the trike from over the rear wheel for 36 days and 13,840 kilometres aiming to finish in Paris, with the only concession to comfort being a Harley Davidson saddle in place of the original seat.

"The story for Auguste Pons was a short one," said Gonnissen.

"Stranded without petrol early in the race they couldn't be rescued by the other competitors

Page 19: Hawke’s Bay Branch Newsletter THE MAGhbvcc.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/HBVCC_April_2019_Colour.pdf · 2019-04-13 · That Cape Kidnappers driveway is a stunning drive but certainly

19April 2019

as they were ahead of them. They ended up drinking the water out of the radiator, and then started their perilously long walk back to Peking in the heat. They nearly died and the Contal is still out there covered by sand somewhere.

"Auguste Pons and navigator Oscar Foucauld were the only men not to eventually make it back to Paris so we intend to lay that ghost to rest. Pons was certainly the bravest of the five competitors in the race and he lost everything in the Gobi Desert - even his 1906 driving licence was left in the trike when the Contal was abandoned. However, we did find his 1908 replacement document.

"As it is one of the few original Mototri Contal, we have tried to keep as many original parts as possible which is why some components of the original trike will be in place. In some cases we have simply had to beef up the chassis with the endurance rally and the finish in mind.

"We are nearly ready to start testing the Mototri Contal which has to be ready to be shipped to China in early March. We want to be prepared but I am not underestimating the formidable challenge ahead. We know this will be a life changing event if we can get the Mototri Contal all the way to Paris and finish the job for Auguste Pons 112 years on."

Belgian architect Anton Gonnissen is determined to finish what Pons started. Just 122 years later.
