Hello Parents,

October brings a mix of emotions to our Kindergarten family. We are excited to celebrate Fall Festivities with our little learners but sad to say goodbye to Mr. King. We wish him the best. Soar to greater heights Mr. King. We will miss you.

Continue to read to your student daily. Check folders and return important papers as soon as possible. Provide opportunities for students to review sight words and work with numbers each day. As always, contact your child’s teacher should you have any questions.

Thank you, The Kindergarten Team

"What if we could get EVERY student in EVERY classroom to love to learn? It’s possible when we GIVE our students a reason to get excited about learning! We captured students’ attention by doing something different and challenged our instructional practices by delivering ordinary content in an extraordinary way. We showed our students that school is a place they WANT to be each and every day! On September 20, the Multiage teachers ROCKED out for our students by joining thousands of educators from around the world as we dressed up in ROCK outfits and ROCKED OUR SCHOOL! The K/1 rock stars learned all about force and motion, including an egg drop. Each student had to design a safe contraption for his/her egg within a shoebox. The 2/3 rock stars learned about rocks, including breaking apart geo-rocks to discover what was inside. In addition, they constructed the four layers of the earth using play-doh. Our day concluded with our entire Multiage family coming together for “ROCK” popsicles. Thank you, The Multiage Team

Greetings Parents!!!

The 1st grade team is excited to see the play “Diary of a Worm, Spider, and Fly” on October 17, 2018 This field trip will be a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience the integration of science, literacy, and the arts. At home you can continue the theatrical journey by asking your child about the message of the play, what they learned about characters, were they able to identify the conflict, and how the conflict was resolved. Finally, we have a hearty Heron Heights thank you to Mr. King for his stellar leadership and guidance. We wish him the best on his new adventure! Thank you, The First Grade Team

Hello 3rd Grade Parents,

We would like to welcome, Ms. Natalie Conforti to our 3rd grade team! She comes to Heron Heights with the highest recommendations. We look forward to Ms. Conforti becoming an asset to our students.

Our 3rd grade team is very excited to visit Parkland's City Hall this October 16, 2018 for "Government Week." Students will learn how our local government works and meet city commissioners and the mayor!

Students will also visit the Parkland library and participate in a mock election, voting for their favorite books. Other highlights include a tour of an ambulance, fire truck, (students get to use a real fire hose), and BSO headquarters.

Thank you, The Third Grade Team

What’s “brewing” in second grade? We are excited it’s October because that means pumpkins, pictures, bats, festival fun and cooler weather (we can only dream)! Smile! 2nd grade will be taking their Fall pictures on October 3rd! Second grade teachers are very busy gearing up for our Fall Conferences on October 18th and 19th. We look forward to sharing your child’s progress with you! Check with your child’s teacher regarding your time slot; please arrive ten minutes early. Our first field trip is on October 11th to see “The Magic School Bus” at the Coral Springs Center of the Arts! We have been learning about what it means to be a scientist and can’t wait to see it come to life on stage! We hope all our second-grade families are getting excited for our first “Family Project”. We have been discussing character traits in reading and are looking forward to seeing what characters come in to be apart of our fantastically “ghoulish” pumpkin patch on October 26th. Our Fall Festival parties will be on October 31st! Students can wear their costume to school! We are going to have some “Spooktacular” fun this month!

Thank you, The Second Grade Team

The fifth graders have begun two special programs to enhance their learning. The students are participating in a 10-week "Riding the Waves" program. This program designed for fifth graders will help students cope with stress, deal with adversity, and prioritize their responsibilities as they ride the emotional waves of being on the doorstep of middle school. The students are also engaged in a monthly "High-Touch High-Tech science program. This program is designed to provide enhancement lessons to the science curriculum to help prepare students for the FCAT Science Standardized Test, which they will take for the first time this school year. Thank you, The Fifth Grade Team

Fourth grade will be traveling to the Coral Springs Center for the Arts on October 23rd to see the musical, “We the People: America Rocks!” This musical review features our Founding Fathers, Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and Franklin. The "Fab Four" will explain our system of government, while showing the importance of our government. Our fall festival parties will be held on Friday Oct 26th. Students will not dress up this day. However, they will dress up on Oct 31st. Classes are practicing multiplication facts and learning to multiply four digits by two digits. We are also publishing our narrative writing and will soon learn how to write an option on essay. Thank you, The Fourth Grade Team

Greetings Heron Heights Parents,

Remember, you are your child's first and most important teacher! Opportunities to foster their growth, and support their academic success exist all around us. Next time you go to the grocery store, ask your child to add up the cost of two items. For younger students you can round the cost to the nearest dollar and then ask them to add the prices. For others, you can ask them to round the prices to the nearest dollar and then add. For our oldest students, you can ask them to add the exact prices in order to practice their decimal addition. These examples promote mathematical principles that students need in order to experience success at all levels.

As always, reading to your child daily will allow younger students to hear fluent expressions of the written word as well as promote a love of reading. The next step would be to pose questions to students about what they have listened to or read for themselves. Questions the ask students to support responses with information from the text builds critical thinking skills. Should you have further questions about how you can promote literacy in your home, please speak with your child’s teacher.

Sincerely,

The Curriculum Team

CONGRATULATIONS MS. KATIE CURRAN

• Make sure that we have your correct email address and phone number on file. Information is often pushed out via email. If the school doesn’t have your correct address, you may miss valuable information. See Mrs. Peetes in the front office if you need to make changes.

• Our “Enchanted Forest” Book Fair Preview & Bingo Night, were both huge successes. Thank you to everyone who participated.

• Parents, please be kind to your fellow drivers in the mornings and afternoon by moving all the way down to the end of the carline. This will allow us to fit more cars in the loop.

• This is a reminder that each month we will conduct a fire drill and a code red drill. You will receive a parent link regarding the code red drill.

• Remember parents, if you plan to chaperone a field trip you must be an approved Broward County volunteer.

CONGRATULATIONS MRS. MERIDITH O’RORKE
