Course Description

80% of this course is hands-on practical sessions where participants will be engaged in a series of interactive small groups, class workshops and role-plays.

Supervision lies at the heart of any management function, and as such the development of supervisors remains at the centre of any career development plans. Supervision is related to, and affects performance and productivity; so unless we are prepared to view it as such, we will not get the required return on our investment. Whether working in engineering, operations, production or maintenance, we need to develop supervisors who understand and practice sound supervision.

The competence of supervision as a function and the competencies of a supervisor are not necessarily one and the same. The reconciliation between these two apparently identical features is what the course content attempts to address.

The course participants will review the various factors that have a bearing on supervision and the development of supervisors such as communication, feedback, culture, self-command and development, stress, conflict containment, group dynamics, quality standards, crisis management, creativity and competence, and carry out a thorough analysis of the methodologies, measurement techniques and applications of each factor, and the inter-relationships that tie all these factors together.

Most of the worldclass oil & gas companies had already developed their own HSE Plans for Excellence, a strategic plan with aspirations that are directly aligned with their business drivers. The plan systematically addresses key risks and moves toward leadership by enhanced HSE performance in all aspects of the business and ultimately leads to competitive advantage and sustainability. Long-term safety effectiveness can only be attained by addressing the true drivers of loss in an organization; its values, structures, relationships, and leadership competencies. Supervisors and Controllers have extensive safety knowledge and much practical experience of assessing risks and preventing accidents. Many also have personal experience of the consequences of failure, both in terms of personal pain and organizational response. Although they know what needs to be done, they often find it difficult or impossible to do it, for a variety of personal and organizational reasons. This course is designed to allow Supervisors and Controllers to learn about and develop HSE leadership skills and explore their personal values while performing their routine work in the oil refinery.
