Dr. Shackelford has served as an advisor on the medical uses of cannabis to legislators in Colorado and other US states as well as to several foreign governments, and serves on advisory counsels to state agencies in Colorado charged with regulating and studying medical marijuana. He is principle physician of Amarimed of Colorado, a medical practice devoted to the study of cannabinoid medicine and to caring for patients for whom cannabis is an effective treatment option. Dr. Shackelford’s work in treating a form of severe epilepsy due to Dravet syndrome using a cannabis extract high in the non-psychoactive compound CBD was featured in the CNN documentary series Weed: The Marijuana Revolution, hosted by Dr. Sanjay Gupta. The success of the cannabis treatment in that case and many others motivated him to begin investigating potential medical uses of cannabis. However, because U.S. law makes it difficult to study cannabis in this country, Dr. Shackelford is beginning a series of basic science and clinical trials of cannabis in Israel which will result in a number of medically appropriate pharmaceutical-grade products for the treatment of a variety of different medical conditions.
