The founder, born as Marie Grosholtz, came face to face with death. As a wax worker of renown in Paris and former tutor to the sister of Louis 16, she was commanded by the leaders of the French Revolution to take death masks from the decapitated heads of the victims of the guillotine. Having married a civil engineer, Francois Tussaud, she came to London early in the 19 th century and by the time of her death at the age of 89, her wax works were famous.
