First, I am very grateful to His Majesty for honoring the congress by his high patronage.
I am very pleased that you are here to experience the excitement of new ideas and discoveries; the very best in orthopedic education, research and technology.
The success of this meeting depends on your active and extensive participation that will further consolidate the ties, brotherhood and cooperation between us. There will be 2 symposiums and 3 round tables, 55 lectures presented by renowned Arab and international orthopedic surgeons, 125 free papers and 97 posters.
Please, join us at the opening ceremony on Wednesday, May 19th to assist the inaugural lecture about the history of Arabic medicine.
I would like to thank all members of the board of SMACOT, P.A.O.A, the organizing committee and the scientific committee for their efforts.
Finally, we thank our sponsors and partners who support our actions.
Welcome to Marrakech. Welcome to Morocco.
Have a great meeting!

Welcome to Marrakech
Dear Colleagues, Asalam Alikum, It is indeed a great honor and pleasure to welcome you to the 15th Pan Arab Orthopedic Congress, which is being held here in Marrakesh. The Pan Arab Society has since its inception, endeavored to bring the orthopedic fraternity from all corners of

Panarab Presentation
PAOA past and future The Panarab Orthopaedic Association (PAOA) was founded on January 21
st, 1993 in Muscat, Sultanate of
Oman, during a meeting on invitation of Wahid Kharussi. It is the merger of two previous associations in Jordan and Egypt.
Today in Marrakech, some of the PAOA founding members will be attending the 2010 meeting, such as Mohamed Darwish, Mondher Odeh, Thami Benzakour, Bouchaib Zryouil, amongst others. These officers have greatly contributed to bring the Arab Orthopaedic Surgeons together and to settle the bylaws and constitution of the new Association. The main objectives of PAOA are:
1) Promoting orthopaedic knowledge and research throughout the Arab Nation. 2) Strengthening friendship and brotherhood among the PAOA members. 3) Sharing experiences through Orthopaedic conferences and corporation, as well
as through the PAOA journal.
The web site shows that: The first PAOA Board members were: Thami Benzakour (Morocco) as President, Salah Gado (Egypt) as Secretary General, Mondher Odeh (Jordan), Mohamed Benjeddou (Algeria), Wahid Kharussi (Oman), Mahmood Booz (Egypt) and Mustapha Salem (Jordan). The successive Board Chairmen (as General Secretaries) were Faycal Mussawi, Mahmood Ababneh, Hassan Ezzaher and presently Mohamed Darwish (Oman). The first PAOA meeting was organised by the SMACOT (with Thami Benzakour as President), in Marrakech in 1994. About 400 participants attended that meeting. The present meeting, again in Morocco, under the presidency of Samir Karrakchou, will be held on May 19
th, 2010.
We are delighted to see that since its first meeting, PAOA is achieving more and more federating links and opening more and more doors towards other parts of the world. Under the chairmanship of Mohamed Darwish we aim at tightening the links with other international societies such as SICOT, AAOS, EFORT, SAFO, amongst others. Now in Marrakech, PAOA is inaugurating a new era entitled “friendship nation of SICOT”. Thus, SICOT will benefit from PAOA support and PAOA will benefit from the very interesting SICOT advantages offered to the Arab Orthopaedic community. During the opening ceremony of this meeting, an “Understanding Agreement” will be signed by both parties.
Thami Benzakour Past PAOA President,
SICOT Vice President for Africa, Near and Middle East

SMACOT Presentation
SMACOT Moroccan Society of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology was created in 1982 in Rabat after several preparatory meetings between surgeons from the public, private and military academic sectors.
The common ideal uniting them was to create an association on the model of already existing scholarly societies. The founding orthopedic surgeons were no more than 30. They worked hard to recognize their specialty, develop and assert their skills. The main objectives pursued by the SMACOT are to contribute to the development of specialty, with significant emphasis in the initial training and continuing education. It also seeks to build relations of brotherhood between the various components that make up the SMACOT, state bodies and other national and international scholarly societies. Today, the SMACOT gathers 400 members, orthopedic seniors, residents and 120 young trainees. The recent years our company has grown with four daughter associations; the Moroccan Society of Hand Surgery, the Moroccan Society of Arthroscopy, the Foot Group, Study of Tumors of the Musculoskeletal System Group. This reflects the SMACOT members’ will to excel in different areas of our specialty.
