One region for a cooperation of all cultures

The Ruhr Area represents the constant change within the past decades like no other

region in Germany. Mining and steel industry have shaped the Ruhr Area.

Due to the hard work in the mines, where it was vital that people relied on each

other, solidarity is very distinctive amongst the people living there.

Many people immigrated from other countries and cultures.

The Ruhr Area has become their home.

Necessary economic restructuring has been skilfully carried out with diligence and

persistence.

In this mining region with a successful economy Germany developed a culture of

distinctive art. Nominating the Ruhr Area to European Cultural Capital 2010 is a

tribute to the people who call this place their home.

Also the democratic spirit, the European idea and the determination to solve the task

of integration successfully are aspects which have been acknowledged by the

nomination to European Cultural Capital.

People here stand for cultural openness. There is no room for racism, anti-Semitism

and national socialist ideas.

With this in mind BEGEGNUNGEN2005 would like to make a contribution to the

events of European Cultural Capital 2010 with the concerts

“Instruments of Peace”

Project contents

Integration

The project PACT will be introduced at the concerts. Young people talk about their

experiences.

In the run-up BEGEGNUNGEN2005 will ask two

schools with a high percentage of pupils with

migration background to take part in the project

"PACT - Jugend filmt" (“young people filming”).

There will be three camera teams in each school,

made up of young people from seventh, tenth and

twelfth grade.

Young people with migration background are also part of the team. The participants

are equipped with video cameras by

BEGEGNUNGEN2005. In workshops the young people are made familiar with the

handling of the camera. They will then introduce themselves in front of the camera.

They tell their story, talk about their lives and their daily routine. What are the

differences and similarities? Thus they learn about each other's religion, culture,

language, habits and traditions.

Questions like

What kind of music are you listening to at

home?

What is your favourite food?

What do you talk about while having dinner?

What kind of holidays do you celebrate and

why? Can I join you on one of these occasions?

encourage exchange and interest in each other.

Young people have fun working with the camera.

They creatively put their ideas to practice.

The film footage is sifted through by

BEGEGNUNGEN2005 and cut into a film.

The film is shown at the concerts.

The young participants are then going to talk

about what they experienced during their film

work.

Those concerts will be part of our integration

work, as participants are coming from different

parts all over the world representing a great

diversity of music.

An enormous range of artistic performances will

be shown, from classical music to rock, from

classical ballet to traditional folk dance.

The Ruhr Area - a cosmopolitan region

The young artists that come here from different parts of the world demonstrate

cultural openness with their performances.

Young musicians, dancers and singers from Europe, Israel,

the U.S. and Taiwan stand up for peace and understanding.

Encounters of religions

All participants that make up the ensemble express unity and solidarity of religions.

Young people from the

Catholic School of Haifa and

their friends from Tel Aviv

worked out their musical

performance in Germany. They

met at the concerts

"Instruments of peace" in

Aachen 2009 and became

friends. On December 23rd the

young people from Tel Aviv

went to Haifa to celebrate a

Christmas party and make music with their friends.

On January 28th 2010 the young people

met together with their parents in Hakfar

Hayarok in order to get to know each

other and consolidate their friendship.

For the first time Bedouin girls will come

to the Ruhr Area. Thus members of all

three monotheistic religions take part in

the project.

Furthermore, there will be guests from

Taiwan who represent East Asian culture and their religious orientations.

Our groups

Europe:

There will be young people from

North-Rhine-Westphalia playing

classical music and Turkish folk.

An ensemble from Luxembourg will

play classical music.

A folk dance group from Poland will

also be there.

Israel:

There will be three groups from

Israel:

Firstly, a rock band, a classical choir

and ballet dancers from Tel Aviv.

Secondly, young Arabian Christians

with Arabic music from Haifa.

And finally, Bedouin girls from Negev.

They will show Arabian folk dance.

USA:

The group from the U.S. still has to be put together.

Wayne Vandall, a Native American from the Lakota

tribe, will conclude the concert with all participants by

singing his hymn "Song of Love" that he has

composed for us.

Taiwan:

Classical East Asian music and folk dance.

Possibly together with students from the People's Republic of China.

Project goals

The goal of the project is to promote

cooperation between cultures and

religions with the concerts "Instruments

of Peace".

Our message to the people is the same as

Wayne Vandall's, a Lakota Indian from

the USA. He says: "We are all related. We

are all responsible for each other and we

bear responsibility for nature." Through the young artists from all over the world and

the various genres of music we intend to put forward the idea of the European

Cultural Capital 2010.

Project agenda

BEGEGNUNGEN2005 is very experienced in doing international exchanges and

integration work in Germany.

Our projects are closely

connected with the

performance of art. Through

the intensive work in the run-

up and at the actual concerts

the participants get to know

each other better and

friendships develop.

At the concerts a feeling of togetherness is passed on to the audience.

BEGEGNUNGEN2005 arranges the groups that will take part in the project.

In the run-up of the meeting in Germany the programme will be coordinated in detail

with each of the participating groups. Our director Maytal Ben-Hamo is in charge of

the artistic conduct.

All participants of the ensemble are supposed to be accommodated in youth hostels.

The concerts are scheduled for Essen, Bochum and Düsseldorf. There shall be one

concert for pupils in the morning and one for adults in the evening. The exact

locations still have to be arranged. The young people are probably going to stay in

Germany for ten days. Three out of those ten days are planned for preparing for the

concerts.

We have asked our founding member, Ms Iris Berben, patroness of the European

project „Begegnen – Erinnern – die Zukunft gestalten“ (Encounter - Remember -

Create the Future), to take an active part in the project.

Encounters with the „Earth People“ The musical encounters are attended by two drama students who are searching for the „Earth people“. They find them and get involved in their music performances. About this event they will make a documentary: The young man ist he cameraman, the young woman is the director. The cameraman represents a young Arabic man, whereas the director represents the Jewish part. On the one hand, their work shows problems between men and women; on the other hand it represents the field of conflicts in terms of religion, social and cultural backgrounds. Through the encounters with the „Earth people“ the two students get to know each other better and finally fall in love with each other. At the end they think about a way how to tell their parents about their relationship. The sketch „Have a Dream!“ will be part of the program. Here, young actors will communicate the importance of having a dream that gives us the power to overcome barriers, to solve problems and to realize our dreams for the future.

Concept Ruhr 2010: A group of teenagers from different countries travel by ship as a part of a new multi cultural project, as suddenly out of nowhere, they meet a mysterious shaman who tells them that they are the only people left on earth. Everything they have with them is everything left in the world. Their culture, language, music, pictures, whatever they have on their laptops or cell phones are the remains of our world. Slowly they start to share and show one another parts of their culture in singing, dancing, playing music, telling stories, they learn that sharing your culture makes you stronger, that everybody has got something special to give, that together we are much stronger that just single individuals, that we are all a part of the whole, that there is always something new to learn. The mutual dream of everybody is to build a new world where all the people of all cultures, all religions, and all languages are equally important as a part of the identity of earth.
