Transcript of Have a blessed week, · Fr. John P. Klein Pastor Christmas Day Dinner is being sponsored by the St....
John the Baptist is a prominent
figure in Advent given his role in
preparing the world for Christ. He
was totally focused on his call and
evidenced a ton of humility in
stepping aside when Jesus
appeared on the scene. So many
thought John was the Messiah and
would have embraced him as
such. John, however, was totally
committed to keeping the light
shining on the true Messiah, Jesus
Christ.
A prominent part of John’s
message was repentance. He
called the people to “make
straight the way of the Lord.” Many
heeded the call and underwent
conversion.
Though Advent is not a penitential
season like Lent, it is a time for us to
let go of anything that would keep
us from embracing Christ more fully.
Is there anything in your life that
keeps you from receiving the Lord
with whole heart and soul?
One way to address these
obstacles to receiving Christ
wholeheartedly is through the
Sacrament of Reconciliation. This
Sacrament challenges us to name
our sins, take full responsibility for
them, express sincere sorrow for
having committed them, and
receiving absolution, the presence
of Christ’s mercy.
Many of you choose to receive the
Sacrament of Reconciliation during
Advent because you understand its
value as you seek to celebrate
Christ’s birth. I encourage ALL
parishioners to participate in the
Sacrament before Christmas. There
are many scheduled opportunities
to receive the Sacrament at St.
Gerard.

This weekend at the 11:00 am Liturgy, the St. Gerard Parish Community will
be receiving several adults into the next phase on the RCIA journey (called
the Catechumenate) during the Rite of Acceptance and Welcome ceremo-
ny. These people completed their initial Inquiry Period of learning what Chris-
tianity has to offer and now begin the second stage of further study of the
Catholic Faith. This Catechumenate Phase has an added emphasis on
Scripture and Mass. You will begin seeing these Catechumens and Candi-
dates at the 9:00 am or 11:00 am Mass, where they will be dismissed back to
the classroom after the homily to discuss the Word of God further. Please continue to keep
them and those who work with them in your prayers. May we, with them, continue to grow in
our wisdom and faith in Jesus Christ!
Homebound of our parish, please pray for the following intentions
this week.
May those participating in Alpha, Bible Study and other adult
faith formation opportunities be touched by the Holy Spirit and
grow in their faith.
For the RCIA participants partaking in the Rite of Acceptance
and Welcome during the 11:00 am Mass on 12/8; that as they
publically share their desire to become Catholic, we as
parishioners, sponsors, godparents, staff and team members
may be right beside them to mentor and support them on
their journey.
For those gathering for parish meetings this week: may they
be open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit as they plan their
upcoming events.
Prayer Shawl Ministry: may the shawls made with love by
these ministers be filled with prayer so that those who receive
a prayer shawl might feel God’s love wrapped around them.
Youth and Middle School Ministry Events: may those who
attend grow in Christ as they interact with their peers. We
pray especially for those teens on retreat this weekend.
May the couple celebrating the Sacrament of Matrimony on
12/14 appreciate the sacred, permanent bond they are
receiving and cherish this day always.

Our next Moving On Club gathering will be on Friday, December
13th at noon in the Adult Ed rooms (#137/135). We will be having a
Christmas Potluck! Please bring some baby clothes to donate to
Shared Pregnancy as we share the spirit of giving for Christmas.
The Moving On Club is a group of ladies who are divorced,
widowed or single who enjoy each other’s company, share
fellowship, support and fun! Our regular meetings occur monthly
September-May the second Friday of the month in Rm 135/137 at
noon. We would be honored to have you join us—it’s a great
way to make new friends! Please call Mary Peacock with any
questions (517-323-2379).
*NOTE our cancellation policy: If St. Gerard School has a snow
day, we will not meet either.
Believe it or not,
Chr i s tmas i s fast
approaching. The St.
Gerard Saint Vincent de
Paul Conference (SVdP)
will once again use the Giving Tree
Program to provide gifts for the needy
children in our Parish area. The Giving Tree
Program identifies gifts, toys, books, cash
donations, and hat and mitten sets that
are needed. Tags that describe the gifts
needed for a specific age and gender are
made available in the Church gathering
area near the bare evergreens awaiting
placement of the tags to complete their
decoration. Parishioners are requested to
pick up the tags and purchase the
requested gift. As the gifts are brought
back to the Gathering Area, parishioners
place paper ornaments on the trees for
decoration. The decorations of the trees
should be complete when the gifts are all
in, and serve as a reminder of the
generosity of our parishioners. Please do
not wrap the gifts before placing them in
the Gathering Area as the gifts are
combined to make a set of a toy, book
and hat and mittens for each child.
The Giving Tree Program will start the
weekend after Thanksgiving and run until
Noon on December 15, 2019. The Gift
Bundles will be delivered on December 22
at noon from the SVdP House at 1213
Clark Road. Please add to your Christmas
Joy and participate this year as the need
in our area is truly deep.
Thank you and please contact SVdP at
(517)853-8132 if you have any
questions. We pick up messages and
answer them on Wednesday afternoons.
The Giving Trees will be set up on Friday,
November 29 and will remain up through
Sunday, December 15 by which time all
donations must be collected. The gifts must be
sorted and wrapped prior to delivery.
Volunteers to help prepare and deliver are most welcome.
Preparation and wrapping will take place at the SVdP House on
1213 Clark Road on:
Saturday, December 7 from 1:00-3:00
Sunday, December 8 from 1:00-3:00
Saturday, December 14 from 1:00-3:00
Sunday, December 15 from 1:00-3:00
Gifts will be delivered to the children’s families on Sunday,
December 22 after the 11:00 am Mass from the SVdP House at
1213 Clark Road. (See article below for more information.)
Many children have accompanied their parents for the gift
wrapping and delivery. Most have had a great experience and
learned that helping others is in itself a gift.
Please attend as you can during this hectic, but happy time.
Thanks from all of us at SVdP.
On Sunday, December 15 and Sunday,
December 22, two of the year’s most
heart-warming Parish events you could be
a part of will occur. Our Saint Vincent
DePaul Society will have the gifts from the
Giving Tree Program and Christmas Food
Baskets ready to deliver. You are invited
to help deliver these to their recipients. The
gifts will be wrapped and bagged, the
food baskets prepared; all that is needed
is a partner, a vehicle and good cheer.
This is a great family opportunity to
practice the true meaning of Christmas.
Please practice your Ho, Ho, Ho and meet
as follows:
Sunday, December 15 after the 11:00 am Mass
Meet at Fr. Weber Hall to deliver food baskets
Sunday, December 22 after the 11:00 am Mass
Meet at the Saint Vincent DePaul house at 1213 Clark Road
(first intersection on Willow east of St. Gerard Church)
to deliver gift bags.
Thank you and Merry Christmas!
Who Can Participate? Families, students in need of service, groups of friends, individuals who
would like to form friendships and help others. We just ask that children 14 or younger are accompanied by an adult.

Our Saint Vincent de Paul Conference has again been offered the opportunity to participate in the Meijer
“Holiday Simply Give” Campaign. Your support of the “Simply Give” program in the past has helped us to meet
the needs of hundreds of families here in the St. Gerard community as all proceeds are used solely to purchase
food for the needy.
Meijer has offered to partner with us in the “Holiday Simply Give” campaign that will run from Sunday, November
10th through Saturday, January 4th. The “Simply Give” program allows any shopper at the local West Saginaw
Meijer the opportunity to purchase a $10 donation card (best used on Double Bonus Days) when they check out and all of the proceeds collected will go to our St. Gerard St. Vincent de Paul Conference.
~~~~~ A special THANK YOU to those who donated during the December 3rd Bonus Day!
PLEASE NOTE: Meijer will no longer match other donations except on the two Double Bonus Days
Last Double Bonus Day: December 13th
Please use the above date for a greater impact of serving the poor.
Meijer will donate $20 for every $10 donation during the double bonus days. Your $10 donation on Tuesday,
December 3rd or Friday, December 13th will in essence turn into $30 to help St. Vincent de Paul Society feed those
in need. Please donate during this time period in order to maximize your charitable contribution.
Simply Give Cards will be available in the church gathering areas and in the parish office. They will also be
available throughout the West Saginaw Meijer store.
We are called to be witness of Christ’s boundless love for the poor, lonely, the suffering and the deprived.
November ushered in our "holiday season"
with Thanksgiving. This day of thanks leads us to the day that
changed history - the day of Jesus' birth. That one act deserves
all the thanks and gratitude we can muster.
The word gratitude is derived from the Latin word gratia, which
means grace, graciousness, or gratefulness. Gratitude is a
thankful appreciation for what you receive, whether tangible or
intangible. We acknowledge goodness in our lives and recognize
that the source of goodness lives outside of ourselves. As Catholic
Christians, we believe the source of that goodness to be God.
Can gratitude really make a difference in our health? A study at
UC Davis and University of Miami had 1/3 of a group journal
weekly about what they were grateful for, 1/3 wrote weekly
about what irritated them, and 1/3 wrote about what affected
them - not focusing on negative or positive. After 10 weeks, those
who focused on gratitude were more optimistic and appreciative
of their lives. Surprisingly, they exercised more, and had fewer
doctor visits than those who focused on aggravation.
A University of Pennsylvania study tested the impact of positive
psychology interventions on 411 people. When their assignment
was to write and personally deliver a letter of gratitude to
someone who had never been properly thanked for his or her
kindness, participants immediately exhibited a huge increase in
happiness scores. This impact was greater than that from any
other intervention, with benefits lasting for a month.
Show people how much you appreciate them: say thank you, I
love you, let me help you. Focus on people and relationships for
a truly Merry Christmas. health.harvard.edu
