Everyone was dressed up and looking beautiful, and all had a wonderful time enjoying the sponsored local wines, the delicious food and the music provided by local band Groove Foundation. All funds raised go directly to helping the animals and are split equally with Napier SPCA, as this is a special combined event, organised jointly between the Shelters. So many wonderful people gave very generously and made the night a very special function, special mentions are on the back page. Our heartfelt thanks also go to everyone who came along on the night. Message from the ChairAs we look forward to the promise of Spring everyone at the Shelter is reminded that “the busy time” is all too close. The busy time is when the shelter is over-run with dumped cats and kittens. Sadly, the busy time is getting both busier and longer, so that soon it won’t be a special time at all, it will just be, well, busy. You can help us. We work on a very tight budget with no government help. We depend solely on volunteer help, events, membership, sponsorship, grants and bequests to help keep that budget positive. You can use any one of these ways to help us. From time to time we need electricians, painters, handymen and so on. Could we add you or someone you know to a list of people we can call to help? If so, please get in touch with us. We also want you to show your support for those that support us through grants or sponsorship. We continue to enjoy a partnership with Harcourts Regent Realty, and there are many others who help in a multitude of ways, including those local companies that have donations boxes on their counters. Please thank them. We’re about to get busy with events, so why don’t you come along and be a part of these? Finally, seriously consider becoming a member or extending us a bequest, and let your friends know about the help we need also. It’s a sad fact that money really does determine how many animals we can help, and there will always be animals in need. It’s our goal to help as many as we can. Please be a part of this.Sharon Arcus, Vice President

SPCA has joined together with SAFE and Farmwatch to call for a ban on rodeos. Rodeos are inhumane, are not in the best interests of the animals and we are completely opposed to them. They can be a terrifying and cruel experience for animals, yet in New Zealand this is currently completely legal. We believe no animal should endure such cruelty, especially simply for the entertainment of people. If given a choice, animals would prefer not to participate in rodeos, yet humans force them to do this against their will purely for our entertainment. We are now calling for the government of New Zealand to ban them - Please show your opposition by signing our petition to end rodeo cruelty for good.

pups. Despite the awful experience she had, Poppy remained a bright and bubbly dog. It took a long time for her forever family to find her, but now that they have, this lovely girl’s living the life of Reilly and is getting all the love and attention she missed out on!Her new parent, Michelle, says “I chose to adopt from the SPCA because I wanted to give a previously unwanted dog a good home. Initially I overlooked Poppy because I didn’t think she was the right dog for my 3 year old. However, we spent some time with her and realized how gentle and affectionate she was.We took her for a trial weekend, and I knew instantly we’d keep her as she was so loving toward my son. She just loves to be with us and we love having her.”We’re thrilled Poppy now has the life she deserves! If you’re interested in giving a dog a new life, please pay us a visit.

Our 2016 Fundraising Calendars are available at $10, with all proceeds going directly to the Shelter. The format of next years calendar is different from before, in that the ‘models’ are the pets of SPCA supporters, who placed bids on their chosen month to secure a photo shoot with the talented Kelly Hosken Photography. Kelly thoroughly enjoyed undertaking the shoots, and is as pleased as we are that there’s been so much interest in the calendars from fellow animal lovers. The calendars couldn’t be made possible without the generous businesses who have sponsored each page, many of who are regular sponsors of the calendars, so we hope you’ll support them to by using their products and services whenever you can!The calendars feature beautifully shot large photos and include notable dates. Christmas Cards will be available shortly too, stay in touch with us on Facebook to find out when.Speaking of Christmas – how about getting a shot of the family to share with family and friends? Kelly Hosken Photography offers family and pet portrait photography services at reasonable prices and is available now for bookings. Visit her at facebook.com/kellyhoskenphotography or contact her at [email protected] to book an appointment.
