Headmaster’s Comments brought forward…

Sport also finished on a high note with our Senior Touch boys runners-up in the New Zealand Competition losing to Hamilton Boys in the final. Ash Robinson was named in the tournament team. A well deserved thanks to Mr Matt Marsh whose skill can be attributed too much of the team’s success. I remind the students of our school vision “Young Men United by Respect.” It is what stands us apart from other schools and underpins all that we stand for. Building on our success in 2013 we have given ourselves a challenging set of goals for 2014. As a school, we welcome the opportunity to be the best possible and set our sights on achieving just that. Our goals for 2014 are:

1. To maintain or improve on 2013 NCEA levels of achievement at Levels 1, 2 and 3 and University

Entrance.

2. Students in Years 9 and 10 to progress two sub-levels of the National Curriculum in all subject areas.

3. Māori and Pacific Island achievement is the same as the school wide goals for student achievement.

4. To increase merit and excellence endorsements to the national mean and achieve scholarship success.

5. The Akina student will have respect for his own learning.

The Athletic and Swimming Sports have seen great participation in ‘Lowe Spirit’ being evident in both occasions. Congratulations to Manu Huia House for winning the swimming and athletic sports. Cricket,

Waka Ama and Canoe Polo have been stand out successes in Term 1. The Colts’ Cricket Team have won a place in the top six in New Zealand by reaching the NZCT Finals Tournament to be held in Palmerston North from 24th to 28th March by

defeating Lindisfarne College, Napier Boys’ High School, Rathkeale College and Francis Douglas Memorial College.

The 1st XI have also been outstanding throughout the term defeating Havelock North High School with the loss of only one wicket, Napier Boys’ High School and Lindisfarne. They have now reached the Central Districts’ Final – a tournament of four schools who will compete for a spot in the national finals later in the year. This will be the first time our school has been represented in both the Colts and Senior section of this tournament.

I also have pleasure in announcing our Prefect Leaders for 2014.

The sport of Waka Ama has gone from strength to strength at school. From having only one J19 team and two single paddlers in 2013 to three J16 teams and a J19 team with five single paddlers this year the sport is growing at a very quick rate. With coaching and resources provided by Heretaunga Ararau Waka Ama Roopu who are based at the Clive River the school is provided with everything needed to run a successful training and competitive programme. Teams are on the water four times a week and with many of our single paddlers training on top of that it has become very busy at the river. Teams and individuals are given training programmes which include both sprint and endurance work. The results are certainly paying off.

On Saturday HBHS Waka Ama teams paddled in the Hawke’s Bay Secondary Schools’ Regional Waka Ama Regatta at Pandora Pond. The J16 team paddled in the W6 250m final and beat William Colenso A and B. The team comprised: Isaac Davis, Chez William Waihi, Tipene Kupa Hape, Nova Tautari, Rayce Greening, Ben Jacobs. The J19 team paddled in both the W6 250m final and the W6 500m final against Napier Boys’ winning both races. The team comprised: Tyrell August, Benji Cowan, Jordan Wairama, Teina Huia, Karauria Morrell, Tiki Greening, Manaia Canterbury. In the J19 250m singles final HBHS secured all three placings. The results: 1st Manaia Canterbury, 2nd Benji Cowan, 3rd Tiki Greening HBHS now hold both J16 and J19 Regional Waka Ama titles. The J19 squad will paddle at the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ tournament at the end of March.

First Day of 2014 Our new Year 9 students looked very smart and proud in their new school uniforms. They were given a pōwhiri on their first day at Hastings Boys’ High School which was a rather cool January day. It was good to also see many parents here to experience their son’s first formal experience at our school.

Softball Tournament The Softball Australia U14 Friendship games are from 1-5 July in Blacktown Sydney and will accommodate ‘6’ teams for each gender. Congratulations to our students who were selected in Wellington for a New Zealand representative team:

Hawke’s Bay U14: Liam Udy-Johns and Payne-Stewart Moana Teneti

Hawke’s Bay U15: Sam Coldicutt will travel to Brisbane in August for representative matches.

Email addresses The school would like parents to check with the Student Centre that their email addresses are correct. If you know you have had a change of email address please phone the Student Centre directly 873 0414.

Liam and Andrew Bowden – we are very proud of you These two brothers assisted in saving a family from a rip which dragged them out to sea. Our students were part of the team being prepared for the U14 Nationals Lifesaving Competition at Waipatiki Beach when they became aware of a family in difficulty. After the rescue the family could not speak highly enough of the team effort of which our boys were part. Liam and Andrew were given a Certificate of Excellence in Community Service by Mr Sturch.

Year 9 barbecues The year 9 barbecues this year again proved a massive success. The turn out from students and their families was encouraging and just reiterated the importance of this event and how, between the school and the home, we can work together to provide boys with the best possible education. The barbecues gave families an opportunity to meet and talk with Senior Management, the year 9 Dean and their son’s Form Teacher. The form teachers have done an outstanding job in contacting parents of boys in their form classes and it was nice to be able to put a face to the name. It was also an opportunity to outline the importance of the home environment with regards to homework and consistent reading time. Families were very supportive of these initiatives and agreed that whilst it is an everyday part of school life, it must be encouraged and structured at home. Thanks must go to the form teachers for their help with the organisation as well as the prefects who did a fantastic job cooking the food and making the three days a success. Jason Bird, Year 9 Dean.

Prima Volta Youth Project

in Hawke’s Bay The Marriage of Figaro included Alfred and Emmanuel Fuimaono, LJ Crichton and Manalani-Lotuola Halatanu PPV takes 15 young people and puts them into an environment where they gain hands-on experience of the inner workings of an opera company. Festival Opera's Creative Director Anna Pierard explained: "We want to ignite a spark, to stimulate and generate respect for the art form." For the students involved, working on The Marriage of Figaro could open doors to ideas and experiences they have not yet explored. "Especially for students who haven't yet 'found their thing', taking part in Project Prima Volta could open up a world of opportunities," says Anna Pierard.

The group recently performed at our school giving our boys an excellent opportunity to experience The Marriage of Figaro in two quite different guises: The student cast recently worked with the professional production of the full work with a star-studded international cast during Tremains’ Art Deco Weekend 2014. Our boys feel very proud to have been part of this production which could be the beginning of an ‘artful’ career.

Well done to Alex Thomas-Long It takes courage to be enter a competition of speech makers but this was no trouble to Alex who entered the RSA and ANZ speech competition on Saturday, 8th March. Nine schools entered and many of these have speech making as part of their curriculum so he was up against tough competition. Although Thomas was not placed he was proud to talk about his Great Uncle who had received a Military Medal for his contribution at El-Alamein where he captured the Commanding Officers of the enemy line by sneaking into their territory. Alex’s speech was well received.

Congratulations to ‘Old Boy’ Thomas Sturch Thomas was Head Boy in 2013 and this year he is the recipient of Unison’s Scholarship to study Electrical Engineering in Auckland. Mr Jaun Park (Unison’s General Manager of Networks and Operations) said “Thomas was a standout applicant. In addition to his numerous academic and sporting achievements, it was the passion and focus for a career in electrical engineering that he displayed during the interview which made him the clear winner.”

‘Old Boy’ Dylan Thomas (Sportsman of the Year 2013)

Hands On Science Report from K-Ci Williams

From the 12th-17th of January 2014, I was selected to participate in the “Hands On Science” programme at Otago University in Dunedin. As part of the Nga Mahi-a-Ringa Putaiao scholarship, the expenses of my travel and accommodation were paid for, and I was able to spend a week in Dunedin with 240 other young scientific minds. This program provided a more stable background of scientific knowledge for me to branch out into as I begin NCEA Level 2 and progress toward scholarship assessments next year. Majoring in Geography for a significant part of the summer school, the opportunity offered sound information which was helped by daily field trips to the numerous coastal beaches around Dunedin. With access to the many beaches, my project team collected sand samples from key points on the coast, before organising them into sediment size for sorting and analysis. Using Kestral wind tools, we measured the wind speeds at points with shelter from sand dunes and those without. Looking at the beach profile, we used a Total-Station to survey the coast, plotting the data onto a graph for a visual depiction. Collectively, our efforts contributed to a summary of how wind and waves affect the topography of the coast. As part of the experience I participated in three smaller projects; less time dedicated to each of them, but still providing an equally enjoyable output. The first of these was Physics. Using a Van de Graaf generator, we looked at how electric currents are conducted through the body - which often leads to a spark or shock, as well as LEDs powered by power cells. In a compulsory activity, the second of my smaller projects was the Māori Centre, where I was educated on careers in the Māori field, as well as how to succeed at Otago with other Māori students. The third and final project was Chemistry - making cobalt

chloride crystals. Being exposed to more advanced chemicals certainly helped prepare me for Level 2, as well as a sneak peek at titrations. The experience this programme has afforded me is something I will remember for a long time; for the most part the people I met were the real reward. I highly recommend this programme for any student who is willing to make new friends. You're able to represent the school but also have fun with other students our age. Otago University offers many scholarships, as well as the chance for the local Rotary Club to sponsor you. Don't miss the opportunity to have the best week of your life.

Super 8 report

Golf – Hastings Boys’ High School competed at the annual Super 8 Golf Championships in Rotorua on March 3rd and 4th.

We got off to a great start due to excellent rounds from Stephen Wilding who shot a 75 and Taine Manaena who shot a 76 to lie third after the first round. Difficult conditions proved costly for us in the 2nd and 3rd rounds although an impressive 78 from Josh Dasent in round two helped us to finish a creditable sixth overall. Sam Morrell was an impressive second overall in the individual Stableford B Grade competition amassing 122 points over three rounds.

Tennis – Hastings

Super 8 Tennis was hosted by Napier Boys’ High School at the Hawke’s Bay Lawn Tennis and Squash club. The team consisted of James and Sam Field, Ezra Cribb, Xaviar Hawkins, Josh Greville and Aidan Mathewson. The first day had Hastings Boys’ up against two tough opponents in Palmerston North Boys’ and Napier Boys’ High School. Despite of a number of chances to take points in the matches, the team was well beaten in both games. Gisborne Boys High were next on day two, a game we had targeted to win. This was going to be difficult with our two top players unavailable eventuating in a disappointing loss. Out final match against Rotorua was a close encounter, the Field doubles combination only just losing their match in a Super tie breaker in a good game of tennis. Regardless of the results, the team never gave up and fought until the last point. A special mention to James Field, playing in his fifth and final Super 8 tennis tournament.

Senior A Super 8 Volleyball Report This year Hastings had the privilege of hosting the Super 8 Volleyball tournament, and after some last minute changes to the draw, we ended up having to play three games on Monday. The first being against Gisborne Boys’ High School This traditionally is a tough and even game, and this year proved to be no different, after a slow start and letting Gisborne take out the first set, we rallied together and won the next two sets with relative ease. The fourth set was tight, the lead changed several times, and in the end we dug deep and worked well together to win the set 25-23, so a 3-1 win to Hastings Boys’ High School. After this win we had high aspirations of coming top four, even second. Our next game was against New Plymouth Boys’ High School. Unfortunately the boys took this team too lightly, thinking we would beat them easily after our tough fought victory against Gisborne. This was not the case, New Plymouth rattled us with a simple game plan where they out vocalised us and played simple shots. Despite numerous time outs throughout the game, the boys would not heed the coaches’ advice to stick to our game plan and not to be rattled by the vocal New Plymouth side, we lost the game 3-0. Immediately after this match we had a must win match against Napier Boys’ High School. With the team still languishing in their defeat to New Plymouth we continued to play poorly and lost 3-0. Unfortunately these two loses placed us fourth in the pool meaning the highest we could come now is fifth. A disappointing end to what started out as a day with high expectations. Following Monday’s efforts we then had to play against Hamilton Boys’ High School. Hamilton were a young side with only one hitter. Once again the boys went into the game complacent, contrary to what the coaches were telling them to do, and were beaten 3-1 by Hamilton with a simple game plan of placing the ball over the net instead of big hitting. Losing this game meant we now played off against Rotorua Boys’ High School for seventh and eighth, the boys convincingly won this game 3-0, knowing they could have done so much better over the last two days. Nevertheless there were lessons to be learned and the boys look forward to the tournaments ahead. I would like to thank Joe Hanks for organising the tournament which we hosted, and the coaches Lepani Temo and Jayjay Sali-Siaki for the great job they did.

Congratulations to Tanielu Pio Tanielu has been chosen to represent NZ in Taekwondo fighting in Taiwan for the World Taekwondo Junior Championships. Tanielu will be fighting in the Under 59kg category and possibly have more than five fights in one day. He has been training for 10 years and competing for New Zealand for three years. The first time was two years ago in Australia for the Oceanias. He holds the TNZ title for Black belt champ male under 59kgs. His Taekwondo Club hopes he gets through the first two fights at least. After that his trainer is confident that he should be in the running for a medal. From this competition there are many more but the one in Tanielu’s sight is The Olympics in 2016. Tanielu leaves with his coach Camille Pruckmuller on the 15th March and returns on the 30th March.

Canoe Polo Hawke’s Bay Secondary Schools’ Regionals Junior Team Played six pool games winning five, against St Johns 1 and 2, Napier BHS, Taradale, and Havelock 2. The one game we lost was against Havelock 1 – 3. This put us in the final in a rematch against Havelock. We had a slow start and were 2 nil down due to some defensive errors. We never really recovered and lost 3 – 5. The objective was to qualify for Nationals and this has been achieved so hopefully revenge will come in a few weeks. MVP for the tournament was Liam Bowden

Senior Huia team Played 6 pool games. The team struggled to gel early on and lost their first 3 games narrowly against Taradale, our Akina team and Napier BHS. After some soul searching the boys came out in their fourth game and beat Karamu 3 – 2 in an outstanding match. The team played with belief and the Akina spirit. It was impressive to watch. From there we won our final two games with a highlight being the rematch with Karamu in the playoff for 5th. We beat them again 1 – 0. The boys learned that when you play with a positive attitude, and for each other, success will follow. MVP’s were Tane Hohipa and William Goodsir

Senior Akina Team This team was defending the title they won last year and were favourites to do so. The pleasing aspect is that they played like it, and no team got close to beating them throughout the tournament. The highlight in the round robin was the 6 nil trouncing of Napier BHS, their main competition. The team comprising, Ryan Warren, AJ Bowden, Reuben Papuni, Liam Warren, Kaleb Jones, Ethan Flanders and Taylor Wallbank ended up playing Napier again in the final, and after being pushed early on won 7 – 4. An outstanding effort. They have been practicing since November and the hard work is paying off as they go into Nationals as one of the favourites. Captain and MVP Ryan Warren

Year 9 outdoor education All of the year 9 classes have now gone up to Lake Opahaui. The classes participate in activities such as caving, rock climbing, kayaking and orienteering. While these outdoor activities are fantastic for building their confidence, the activities are also designed to help foster class unity and team building. The students all find it a challenge and gain a great deal from it. Mr Hill is very proud of his photography as seen below.

Sport Highly creditable third placing for Hastings BHS cricketers at Super 8. The Hastings Boys’ High School 1st XI cricketers enjoyed an excellent week of cricket in the recently held Super 8 secondary school tournament. The participants being the 8 traditional Boys’ High Schools from the Central North Island. This year’s tournament was hosted by HBHS at Frimley Park with Hamilton Boys’ High School emerging the winners. The first day saw Hastings BHS bowl New Plymouth BHS out for 169 with some fine seam bowling from Mickey Stirling 5/27 and Captain Jarrod McLeod 3/27 restricting the opposition batsman on a very good batting wicket. In reply Hastings BHS chased down the total in the 48th over for a 3 wicket victory. Excellent contributions with the bat were made by McLeod 31, Bayley Wiggins 23, Hamish Sykes 33no and a rapid 38 from Tobie Birchall all combined to see HBHS home. Our second game was against a young Rotorua BHS side who had suffered a big loss the previous day. To the Rotorua batsmen’s credit they managed a competitive total of 158 all out. All of the Hastings BHS bowlers were tight and demanding with McLeod again starring with 6/24 and a typically miserly spell from Jacob Broderick doing the job in good batting conditions. Hastings BHS batsmen made no race of the chase as they powered to an 8 wicket win with 29 overs to spare. James Field with 66no, Joshua Hannan with a hard hit 34 and McLeod contributing 21 no. Extras generously donated 37 runs to the cause.

Day three was the big one for the two unbeaten teams, effectively a semi-final, against the reigning champions Hamilton BHS. Hastings BHS batted first and after being 94/2 largely due to Hannan’s 41 and McLeod’s 23 suffered a mid-order collapse to be 114/7 with 10 overs remaining. An excellent rear guard effort from Sykes 28no and support from Baden Papuni and Jacob Henry saw Hastings BHS post 171/9. Not enough in the conditions but competitive. Our bowling and fielding efforts were outstanding and with a never say die attitude, Hastings BHS made the Hamilton batsman struggle for every run, Stirling and Sykes with two wickets each were admirable as was Broderick who was again tight and demanding with his off-spin. However our total of 171 proved to be not quite enough as the Hamilton BHS team made it home

with four wickets and three overs to spare. The Hastings boys were left rueing their middle order batting collapse thus denying them a 200 plus total to defend. The last day saw Hastings BHS playoff in the game for 3rd and 4th placing against a good Tauranga Boys’ College side. A consistent batting effort saw Hastings BHS post a good total of 204 from their 50 overs with Sam Field 38, McLeod 43, Birchall 34 and good contributions from Sykes and Henry making up the total. The Hastings BHS bowlers who had performed with great credit all week maintained their standards and backed up by some brilliant fielding and catching saw a brave Tauraunga side eventually succumb for 189 all out. Stirling who was outstanding all week claimed 3/28 and McLeod again showed his all-round skills with his 43 runs, two catches and four wickets. They were ably backed up by left armer Sykes who also had a fine all round week. A 15 run victory and 3rd placing. The highest in the school’s history. The week was rounded off with skipper Jarrod McLeod being named the MVP of the tournament and along with Mickey Stirling (11 wickets) and wicketkeeper/batsman Bayley Wiggins (the most catches) all being selected in the 2014 Super 8 tournament team.

Futsal Hastings Boys’ High School have entered two teams into the Hawke’s Bay Youth Futsal Competition. The Academy 1 Team (pictured) are so far undefeated. They were impressive against the top Napier Boys’ High School team which was comprised mostly of Year 10s. Coached by Jeff Robson, the players, mostly Year 9s, are Aidan Robson, Luke Morgan, Ethan Ladd, Joey Field, Jackson Ralph, Leyton Ross and Trevor Owen. The Academy 2 team have played with distinction so far and provide some much needed depth to the development of the sport to the school. The players are Zayde Liefting, Thomas Alve, Regan Walker, Sam Black and Trevor Owen.
