“Kampong Days” — APSN Annual Dinner

This year’s Annual Dinner was celebrated in unusual style — by revisiting our “Kampong Days” on 23 August 2013 at the Inter-Continental Hotel. The CFA and HQ staff jointly set up a “Mini-Kampong” to welcome all our fellow villagers to reminisce the past. Thus, a total of 350 volunteers and staff of APSN attnded the event. Games such as “tikam-tikam”, “Sarong-Sarong” and Guess-the-Picture brought us back to the 1960s and even earlier. Some of the staff wore “kampong” attire. A fun time was had by all.

After his welcome speech, APSN President Mr Chan Chee Keong gave out the Long Service Awards to the following staffs:

Our staff visiting Wisma Harapan where class-rooms are separated by half-partitions. The other school visited was the Klang Special School

SAMH (KL) Visit — Positive feedbackThe visit made by a group of 35 APSN Exco and Staff to the Selangor Association for the Mentally Handicapped in Kuala Lumpur on 28 June 2013 drew positive feedback by participants. Mdm Aslinah Ahmad, Principal of Chaoyang School and co-ordinator of the trip, created a forum on the APSN Intranet inviting people who had been on the trip to comment on the learning journey. About a dozen responses all pointed out the usefulness of such trips, and how much they have learnt from our sister organisation

across the causeway, doing so much with relatively little resources, but with great passion and dedication. They hoped that similar trips could be organised in the future. Some also shared that by sharing a room during the trip, they got to know their room-mates who may be staff in other APSN schools really well. Such overseas forays are always possible for those who attend conferences, especially the biennial ones organised by the Asian Federation on Intellectual Disabilities (AFID).

SDSC Family Day Sports FestivalThe Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC) held a Family Day Sports Festival on 31 August 2013 at the Yio Chu Kang Stadium. The Guest-of-honour was Mr Lawrence Wong, Ag Minister for Culture, Community & Sports.

Many disability sports were featured, such as wheelchair basketbal and bowling. Entertainment was provided by many guest artistes, and a fun time was had by all the members and friends from the various organisations that make up the SDSC. Our APSN representative Assoc Prof Mohan P. Menon, who is the current SDSC President, gave a token of appreciation to Mr Lawrence Wong for his patronage.

Volunteer Orientation — visits to TS & DSSBoard renewal is an ongoing effort for APSN, as in a VWO, it is the volunteers who run the Association. In recent times our referrals have come from CNPL (Centre for Non-Profit Leadership) and the Kind Exchange. On the 18 September 2013, APSN held another orientation programme for volunteers. APSN Vice President Dr Francis C. Chen was also present to welcome the volunteers.

At Tanglin School, Mr KennethTham (CEO) and Mrs Liza Ow (Principal) gave presentations on the Association and Tanglin School respectively, and also about how volunteers such as Dr Francis Chen has contributed significantly to the progress of the Association. The new volunteers were subsequently given a guided tour of the Tanglin School premises and later departed by our mini-bus to tour DSS’s new building at Choa Chu Kang Grove.

At DSS, Ms Alice Sia (Vice-Principal) and Ms Wanda Chan (Employer Relations Officer) were on hand to give a conducted tour of the new premises. Of particular interests are the facilities for vocational training, especially those for Food & Beverage. The tour ended with a tea reception featuring canapes and mocktails prepared by the students in the F & B department.

Personal Safety for CFA Clients

The purpose of this group work is to equip clients in Centre for Adults (CFA) with some knowledge and skills regarding boundaries in relationship matters, effective communication and assertiveness. Ultimately, the programme will help clients to become more independent and stay safe. Pre-assessment and post-assessment of the group work will be performed to measure the progress of clients more accurately. The assessment will also help to determine the theme of subsequent group work. This adds an element of improvisation into the programme.

Most importantly, clients will enjoy the learning. This will involve learning through hands-on activities and visual illustration. Positively labeled praise will also motivate them to be more engaging and participative.

Role Play : Psychologist teaching client how to avoid “bad touches” from strangers

Discussion on “good touch” vs “bad touch” by strangers.

Personal Safety Group Work programme kick-started in the second week of July this year as one of the modules of the Behavioural Management programmes which all clients of CFA have to undergo. This module will be conducted twice a year, and each run is expected to take approximately four months to complete.

In November 2012, we identified a need for more skills training for our clients in order to better prepare them for employment. We then actively solicited for potential partnerships. With the ready support from SHATEC for training and potential employment by F&B establishments, we embarked on F&B training for our clients. In April 1, 2013, the pilot programme was implemented: A total of 10 clients were involved in the programme and they all have completed 2 of the modules:- (1) WSQ Prepare for Service and (2) WSQ Maintain Food and Beverage Service Environment.

They have also attained the Statement of Attainment (SOA) for the two modules.

F&B Pilot Training ProgrammeThis programme involves formal skills training for young adults with mild intellectual disability age 19 – 21. This programme is necessary in order:

• To provide a longer runway for continued learning • To increase work skills competency and employability in the F&B industry • To provide realistic workplace training opportunities • To promote independent living The course is a Certifiable Training Module in Basic Food Hygiene, and the duration of training would be 336hrs (14hrs per week).

Assessment will be done by an assessor from the Approved Training Organization (ATO) to attain WSQ-SOA.

5 July 2013 was a meaningful day for all students and staff at Delta Senior School. Being new to the community, we were given a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with partners from ITE College West and Chua Chu Kang Citizens’ Consultative (CCC).

Pamphlets were distributed earlier to each household unit around the school vicinity to explain the rationale of the Recycling Outreach Programme for our Youth Day celebrations and to gather the community’s support for this event. A team comprising DSS students & staff, ITE students & staff and members of the CCK Community Sports Club took part in this programme. All were enthusiastic in collecting recyclable newspapers, magazines and clothes. The team covered a total of fifty blocks in the neighbourhood and worked hard in collecting all the recyclable items,

carrying them to the collection points and packing them. The programme provided a great opportunity for our ‘neighbours’ to get to know and understand our students better and at the same time, in building stronger community ties. The amount collected from the recycling project was donated to the HCA Hospice Care (for terminally ill children). The students had lots of fun and mingled comfortably with students from ITE College West. The students and the volunteers ended their day with a satisfying lunch kindly sponsored by Pizza Hut.

Recycling Outreach Programme on Youth Day

In a rapidly changing society of ours, it would be a pity if our culture and ethnicity were to fade away in time to come. What better way than to have an ethnic costume parade which would drive home the point of our national identity as well as the importance of living harmoniously with each other. The new school hall was the venue for the 48th National Day celebrations at DSS With Racial Harmony day incorporated in the celebration, students were asked to dress in pre-determined ethnic

Delta Senior School staged a vibrant performance at the “Welcome To My World” -- the 20th Anniversary Concert by the Very Special Arts (VSA). The performance was held on Sunday 2 June 2013 at the Republic Cultural Centre, Republic Polytechnic.

The dance presented by DSS was called ̀ Changing Times’ which included 3 music pieces. It was a combination of local Malay traditional and contemporary dance steps along with hip-hop moves. The performance was a fusion dance carefully crafted by our dance instructors Ms Kelly Koh and Ms. Suriani Pani. These young teenagers are passionate about dance and their dedication showed onstage. They had to learn new steps and movements within a few weeks. It was a spirited performance by the DSS Dance group.

costumes. The challenge was when the theme of using recyclable materials was introduced for the dress up. Based on our ethnicity, namely, Chinese, Malay, Indian and Fusion Peranakan, each class was asked to send in a few participants. When the day arrived for the showcase, everyone was amazed with the creativity of the staff and pupils of the school. Paper box handbags, Styrofoam clogs with Velcro straps, trash bag tops and sarongs, paper salwar kameez with intricate designs, felts and paper flowers and the lists go on. The brave souls did a culture walk on the school stage while their class

representative described the costumes made out of the recycled materials. After the event when the school sang the National day finale song, there was a groundswell of national pride to be Singaporeans !

To foster greater awareness in the field of employment, the TSPSG organised a talk-cum-sharing on May 11, 2013. The session was well represented by parents and caregivers, staff and students of the school.

The first talk was by Mr Jaieden Ace Shen, Head of HI JOB, an organization which helps individuals with special needs find employment. In his talk, he highlighted the challenges faced by his clients and how with active support, they were able to overcome them.

The second speaker was Mr Koh Seng Choon, founder and Executive Director of Dignity Kitchen, which was conceived as a training school to train individuals with disabilities to be food stall operators and hawkers. This is aligned with Mr Koh’s vision of combining food, education and charity. Based on the audio-visual sharing of his project, it clearly underlined that social enterprise is a bitter sweet venture requiring lots of hard work but rewarding nonetheless.

The session ended with a presentation of mementos to the speakers. A small Mothers’ Day gift also awaited all mothers present as a token of appreciation for their hard work and dedication in bringing up their children with special needs.

AFID Board Meetings & General AssemblyThe Executive Board Meetings of AFID are held every year. When they are held in between the biennial AFID Conferences, they are termed the mid-term Board Meetings. During each AFID Conference, there are usually three such meetings -- two by the out-going Board and one by the incoming Board. On the Final Day of the Conference is held the General Assembly, rather like a General Meeting where all the member-countries are present, and the role is to elect members of the new Executive Board for another term of two yeas. Important decisions taken by the Board are also ratified, and to consider any recommendations of the Board on policy matters.

Creative Dance Therapy WorkshopOn the first day of the Conference, three Workshops were held in the morning, and two in the afternoon. Thus each participant could attend two Workshops, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. These are hands-on practical sessions where participants go through the exercises conducted by the facilitator. Here, we feature the Workshop on Creative Dance Therapy.

Ms Tripura Kashyap, Choreographer and Movement Therapist, was trained at the University of Wisconsin, and has more than two decades of experience in applying movement and dance therapy in the treatment of autistic children and those with behavioural problems, as well as those with psycho-motor problems. Group therapy should have no more than 8 in a group or class.

Various techniques were demonstrated by Ms Kashyap, and the participants were made to undergo a few of these exercises. Techniques such as “shadowing” and “mirroring” were demonstrated, and how one can be aware of the kinaesthetic space around oneself. Here proprioceptive exercises were performed and how understanding this space can help oneself to realise one’s awareness. Some exercises involve the participants lying prone on the floor with eyes shut, and then extending the different parts of their bodies in as many possible directions as possible to experience spatial awareness.

The therapeutic benefits are only tangible if one is immersed in such exercises, and attendance at such Workshops

are essential for understanding the techniques used. Timing, rhythm, sequential actions, adaption are all methods helping autistic children in their behaviour modification, and for children with psycho-motor problems, dance movements help them achieve balance and body control.

Ms Ruby Lou, the Chairman of the Executive Board of the Macau Parents for the Mentally Handicapped had this to say:- “I thoroughly enjoyed the Workshop. I find the various movements and techniques interesting.” She had visited APSN before with a group from her Association (AFEDMM). Another participant was Mr Stanley Lau, Lecturer at the Macao Polytechnic Institute. A trained social worker, he said: “I never knew one could learn so much from a single Workshop”. The recently-elected President of the Ceylon Association for Mental Retardation (CAMR) Mr Nihal Nanayakkara said:- “When I get back to Sri Lanka, I am going to introduce this to my special schools. And I hope we will have a similar Workshop when we organise the AFID Conference in 2015”.

The trip was an appreciation “treat” for the athletes who took part in the Special Olympics Singapore National Games. Through their hard work and determination, Chaoyang athletes garnered a total of 15 gold, 12 silver and 9 bronze medals. Most of the pupils had not visited the aquarium before and they were amazed by the collection of fishes and other sea creatures. Many of them particularly liked the tunnel walk where they could see various species of sharks swimming above and around them. At the end of the visit, the volunteers had a simple lunch with our pupils. They organized a simple Question and Answer game of which our pupils enthusiastically participated. Those who answered correctly were given prizes.

This year, the school introduced a common period of CCE hourly every Wednesday. To encourage students to demonstrate the CCE values, each pupil is given a Model Pupil booklet for positive reinforcement of the CCE value demonstrated. By having a school wide approach and everyone working towards a common goal, Character and Citizenship Education can be meaningful, authentic and successful for everyone involved.

Dr Barbara Hong, our guest speaker

(L-R) CYS Principal Mdm Aslinah Ahmad, APSN President Mr Chan Chee Keong, our two guests and KS Principal Mdm Lim Cheng Liew

The talk provided participants with a deeper understanding of the special educational needs of MID children. One of the areas covered was on how teaching literacy and numeracy skills can be simplified, and how those skills can be effectively imparted to our pupils. Dr Hong also conducted a hands-on activity whereby participants went through a task which they were unable to accomplish. She then linked the activity to how pupils with learning difficulties “see” things. The participants felt that this made them rethink and motivated them to relook into their teaching strategies.

CYS-KS Professional Sharing Day

After lunch, the participants from the two schools shared their own professional team efforts through concurrent sessions: • ‘Effects of iPad on the Learning of Addition’ by Ms Joyce Lin (KS)

• ‘Minute Math @ Katong School’ by Mdm Choo Pee Ling (KS)

• “Let’s Get It Right & Write On!” by Mrs Norlidah Shahrin (CYS)

• “Use Mo ney to Shop for Family” by Ms Lam Bing Ling (CYS)

The feedback from participants was very positive. Overall, it was an enriching professional learning day for staff from both schools as they were able to gain new knowledge from an expert, and also shared their best practices and experiences in teaching APSN pupils.

Teaching staff from Chaoyang School and Katong School came together for a Professional Sharing Day on 6 June 2013 at CYS. Dr Barbara Hong gave a talk entitled “Understanding How MID Persons Learn”. The speaker is an Associate Professor of Education at Pennsylvania State University, and has been working with people with disabilities for over 25 years in various countries.

Youth Day was celebrated on 5 July 2013 at Katong School. This was another occasion for all students to live up to the school vision, ‘Every member aspires to achieve; ready to give’. Students were engaged in a meaningful activity revolving around the theme this year; Growing and Touching Hearts, GROWTH.

The focus of the celebrations centered on students embracing one of the school values, ‘Responsibility’, while

expressing empathy for people around us and reaching out to make a difference in their lives. Eleven classes from the secondary level embarked on Project GROWTH, which required students to decorate cushions with felt materials. These colourfully embellished cushions were then donated to the Lions Home for the Elders, with a wish to bring warmth, joy and cheers to the residents.

Donned in red and white, Katong School staff and pupils celebrated National Day in style on 7 August 2013. The celebration started with formalities of flag-raising and the National Day message read by Mdm Lim, our school principal. In line with the theme, ‘Many stories…. One Singapore’, a video clip of old Singapore was screened.

This was followed by a nostalgic sharing of some of the older staff’s childhood days where they reminisced about how simple and carefree their life was back in the kampungs.

Another highlight of the celebration was the elegant ethnic Malay, Chinese and Indian dance performances put up by the Performing Arts pupils. After that, the pupils swayed and sang with gusto to the catchy tunes of some of our National Day songs.

Pupils participated actively in a quiz on Singapore as they wanted to win as many tokens as they possibly could. Indeed, the staff and pupils not only had a meaningful celebration, they also had a fun-filled day.

The long weekend brought yet another endearing moment in watching the National Day Parade together with family and friends as One Singapore!

Occupational therapy in Tanglin School — Arnel Cabreira Alcira & Edgardo Feljohn Acogido, Jr.

Occupational Therapists assessing students.

Occupational Therapy (OT) at Tanglin School uses varied purposeful activities to help students overcome the effect of his disabilities. The goals of occupational therapy are to improve participation and performance of a child in his“occupations” e.g. self care, play, school and other daily activities. The Occupational Therapist will assess the child and modify the environment or the way of doing a task to promote better participation and independence. They also work towards partnering parents, teachers and other stakeholders so that they can help the child to participate comfortably and inclusively in the community.

Occupational Therapists engage selected students in educationally related activities such as physical exercises to develop or increase gross motor and/or fine motor skills; while other activities are chosen to improve visual perception and eye-hand coordination. The activities will enhance students’ active participation in self-maintenance; academic and vocational pursuits; as well as play and leisure activities. Occupational Therapists provide intervention to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder through sensory-motor based activities where resistive and heavy work activities will improve attention, body awareness and muscle tone, as well as decreasing defensiveness that will enable them to establish a “just right” level of arousal necessary to attend to tasks.

The OT programmes at Tanglin School are as follows: • Vocational Assessment• Listening Program• Vocational-Based OT Intervention

Vocational Assessments are conducted for all Level 1 students. Standardized assessment tools such as the Developmental Test for Visual Perceptual and the Purdue Pegboard tools are used. This process will provide information on a student’s fine motor and visual perceptual skills, which leads to establishing the appropriate intervention strategies to address that need.

The Listening ProgramThe Listening Program is a music listening therapy

that provides engaging brain stimulation to improve performance in school, work and life. It is a fusion of beautiful art and sound science. Systematic training is provided through listening to psycho-acoustically modified classical music which trains the brain to process sound more efficiently. This leads to improvement in self-regulation, sensory processing, attention span and learning.

Vocational-Based OT InterventionWork in its various forms, is seen as being fundamental to the way society is structured and it plays an essential and important part in the lives of people. Vocational-Based OT Intervention includes a wide range of intervention strategies to help students overcome barriers at work.

Intervention is provided throughout the educational cycle in accordance to the student’s changing needs, desires and preference in all areas of occupation. The intervention requires repeated drills and practice to achieve externalization and learning as well as performance in a variety of context to enable generalization. Meaningful student participation within the educational context represents the desired outcome of OT services within the school environment. The specific activities that comprise the “student role” are largely determined by teachers, instructors and other members of the Professional Support Staff.

Resilience is about keeping fit --- during a Mass Aerobics Workout

Teamwork with a Caring HeartA camping trip is always exciting, fun-filled and provides many learning opportunities for participants. One such occasion was a two-day, one-night camp at Katong School on 30 August for students from Levels 1 to 4 to experience communal and independent living.

The students began the day with ice-breaker games and got to know one another better. Teamwork is essential in a camp-setting where everyone’s role is a shared responsibility and this was evident during the school’s spring cleaning activity. Students showed resilience and mutual respect for one another during team-bonding and flag-making activity by cheering on their respective teams.

The teams demonstrated care and harmony for one another as they excitedly competed in the scavenger hunt and during the mass aerobics session. During the Kung Fu Panda

movie-time later that evening, students learnt how the values of resilience, integrity, responsibility and respect could make a person succeed even during difficult situations.

The next morning as the students excitedly made a trip to the zoo, they learnt about care for the larger environment and living harmoniously among all living things on earth. These values were enhanced through their visits to the Wild Africa, Rainforest and Kidzworld zones at the zoo.

We are thankful to our sponsor, Keppel Land, who organised the

interesting and enriching zoo outing for our students.

Carnival of DrumsWhen Ms Poh selected me to go for the carnival, I thought I won’t have any fun. But I was wrong instead, because I’m having too much fun and it’s seriously unexpected. The event was held on 6th April at Downtown East. I saw many types of drums from India, Korea, Japan and Indonesia. The best part, we get to try all the drums and hear the different sounds that they make. It was awesome ! The day ended with a mass session of playing all the different types of percussion instruments. I really enjoyed the day !

My Work Experience Program (WEP): Manning the Buffet Line Up @ Mandarin OrchardIt has not been an easy journey but I have thoroughly been trained and believe that I possess the necessary skills for me to continue being a good employee at Mandarin Hotel. My main duty is to be at the front line, serving guests so that they have a pleasant dining experience. Mainly, I work in the “Fresh Food Section” whereby I have to de-shell oysters as well as prepare fresh salad for the buffet line up. Most importantly, through my work experience program, not only have I

learnt new skills, I have learnt to be a better person and now treat myself and the guests around me better.

My Work Experience Program (WEP): Serving up Freshly Brewed Coffee & Tea @ The Coffee Bean & Tea LeafMy passion has always been to serve up the freshest and tastiest coffee, with the best Latte Art I can think of, to people around me. When I got to work at The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, I was simply ecstatic since I was already working as a part-time Barista at McCafe. Most importantly, I have learnt the importance of teamwork, good leadership as well as the ability to receive customer feedback. As we deal with guests every day, there inevitably would be some who do get upset over the length of time that is taken to serve them. Through this WEP, I have learnt how to handle such situations. As DSS’ tagline goes, “I can, I want and I will” I would never

give up and would continue to give my very best to both my employer and my guests.

Aidil Bin AmranFood & Beverage StudentYear 4Delta Senior School

My AmbitionI have always wanted to be involved in the Performing Arts. I have performed for the Singapore Youth Festival and at Orchard Civic Plaza. I displayed my juggling skills to the audience and received a very warm reception from them. I felt very happy performing at these events as performing makes me feel good. I also love watching Television Artistes like Gurmit Singh acting in a comedy scene. I try and learn by watching them perform on stage or when they host programs so that I can improve myself and think of new acts to perform.
