I would like to thank the Year 12s and their families for their contribution to Harvey SHS over the last five years. Mobile Phones As you will be aware the Premier Mark McGowan and Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery announced the “off and away all day” policy to ban mobile phones and other devices during school hours in all public schools. This will include smart watches, earbuds and headphones. The impact of this announcement will have minimal impact as we already have a Digital Devices Policy in place which clearly outlines Harvey Senior High School’s stance on mobile devices. There is now a total ban from Year 7 to 11 which will be extended to Year 12 in 2020. The Department of Education (DoE) Policy clearly outlines the policy rules and guidelines for implementing this policy. The current policy will be reviewed by the Executive Team and the School Board over the next couple of weeks in readiness for 2020. I stress that the current policy will remain in place for the remainder of 2019 and any amendments made by the EXEC and/or the School Board will be announced to our school community later in the year. Principal’s News Farewell to the Year 12s

The Year 12s have now completed their formal schooling having completed all their course requirements. I would like to thank the Year 12s and their families for their contribution to Harvey SHS over the last five years. It has been wonderful to be part of their journey and it is always a heart-warming moment when you see these young adults exit the secondary schooling system and embark on their next chapter. The last of the formalities will take place on Friday 15 November at their Graduation.

Year 11 Provisional and Final dates and requirements

The Year 11 students are nearing their school year. The last day for Year 11 students is Friday 29 November, 2019. However, those students who have met all their course requirements and been signed off by me, will be permitted to leave school on Friday 22 November (end of Week 6). Parents and carers of Year 11 students will have further details sent to them next week.

Mobile Phones

As you will be aware the Premier Mark McGowan and Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery announced the “off and away all day” policy to ban mobile phones and other devices during school hours in all public schools.

On Wednesday 25 September our Year 9 and 10’s with a scattering of Year 8’s, participated in the Bunbury Winter Carnival competing against other schools in the region in Boys soccer, Girl’s netball, mixed volleyball and Boy’s basketball. We were up against some tough competition but our students did Harvey High School proud with great sportsmanship and team work and never say die attitude! Thank you to the

student coaches and teachers who supported the teams on the day.

The Year 12 Dinner was held at the Parade Hotel. Even though there wasn’t a theme there was a touch of

Hollywood Glam - black, white and gold! To help our Year 12s celebrate18 staff were in attendance plus 5

guests. Nadia Davis was named Belle and James Barron crowned King. A big thank you to our staff who

helped set up and organise; Mel Fry, Tom Quaife, Justine Pinkerton and Gavin Walker you all did

News in Teaching and Learning

Cinesnaps In Term 3, Isabella Smith and I were invited to attend and present at the Cinesnaps Event, in Busselton, as part of Cinefest Oz. Isabella has been instrumental in the education of Indigenous Culture in our community here at Harvey. Isabella spoke in front of approximately 200 guests, sharing her experience of the short film Our Place in Space. This film was developed during the coordination of Science Week - Mission Imagination. Cinefest Oz collated all of our photographs and videos to create "Our Place in Space" a short film that was recognised at Cinesnaps. This short clip will feature as an example of what students could create for Indigifest in 2020 on their website. Isabella is pictured with, Aaron McGrath (lead actor, Jasper Jones), Chantelle Murray (Indigenous filmmaker) and Myles Pollard (McLeod’s Daughter).

Country to Canberra – Kyla Ramos Scholarship Recipient

Last term, Year 10's were invited to apply for the Leadership Competition - Country to Canberra. Kyla Ramos prepared a 2 minute video addressing the prompt; Overcoming the Odds - how can we push through barriers to achieve gender equality? Kyla has now won a scholarship, that gives her the opportunity to go to Canberra, where she will undertake leadership and media training, be mentored by powerful CEO's & politicians, meet inspiring role models and more. Past winners have met Prime Ministers, been appointed as National Youth Ambassadors and are published on a national stage.

We would like to celebrate the wonderful achievements once again by the young artists in our school. Recently we submitted a range of students work to be exhibited in the Illuka Visions Exhibition at the Bunbury Regional Art Gallery. Illuka Visions is designed to showcase the creativity of South West High School students, highlighting the quality and imagination of students from over 15 High Schools. We were lucky enough to have three fabulous works chosen to be displayed. The three pieces cover different concepts and skills from each student which allowed for a well-rounded demonstration of what Harvey Senior

High School students are capable of.

A special congratulations to Janah Padua (Year 8) with her puppet sculpture, Audrey Canillada (Year 9) with her mixed media

painting, and Jade Smith (Year 12) with her oil painting.

The exhibition runs until Sunday 24 November at the Bunbury Regional Art Gallery and is definitely worthwhile visiting to check

out the wonderful young talent all around the South West.

Camp Moments…. SSEP pushed themselves out of their comfort zones at Busselton Camp. From 45 meters under ground, squeezing through rock crevices and commando crawling under low rock formations at the Ngilgi Cave Adventure Tour, to 20 meters in the trees at the Forest Adventure Park.

So many memorable moments…. Relaxing at the pool, Mel’s psychic powers at dinner and my amazing archery skills.

Great fun with a great group of students who showed true teamwork and maturity.

Year 12 Belv idere Camp At the end of last term, the Outdoor Recreation students went on their final school camp to Belvidere Camp Ground, Australind. The Year 12’s departed the Australind boat ramp via canoes and paddled across the estuary (occasionally capsizing) to the camp site. Students set-up camp and cooked a delicious well-earned lunch before heading on a bush walk to the beach. The 12’s had fun playing beach cricket and swimming (getting dumped by the waves!). A fun night was spent playing spotlight and reminiscing over the 5 years of school that has flown by. The next day students canoed back to Australind in some tough, prevailing weather

but had a blast. Well done on graduating Year 12 and attaining your Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation!

MINDFULNESS We often think of meditation as sitting cross legged on the floor, being deep in concentration, when in fact it is wholly focus-sing our attention for a given period of time. As a part of our resilience and mindfulness (being focused, present and safe in the moment) program, each afternoon we undertake short, sharp, focused attention activities including drawing, painting, molding plasticine and kinesthetic sand and silent reading (with ocean music, turtles, jellyfish and dolphins floating in the background).

CRYSTAL GROWING Recently as a part of our Science and Literacy (reading instructions) we decided to learn how to grow crystals - lots of practical fun, but our crystals are not growing very fast.
