Harvey Deep-Sea

On 22nd July 2013, Eastern Shipbuilding Group Inc announced the delivery of Harvey Deep-Sea, the fourth of its Tiger Shark Class offshore support vessels based on the CV 310 design by STX to be constructed for Harvey Gulf International Marine LLC of New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Launched at Eastern’s Allanton facility in mid-December of last year, the vessel is the builder’s second multi-purpose light construction vessel (LCV) for Harvey Gulf and brings the total number of ships built by the Eastern Shipbuilding Group for this customer since 2002 to 11.

Measuring 92.05m x 19.51m with a loadline draft of 6.1m, the new vessel is ABS-classed as an offshore support vessel with Green Passport, Helidk, DPS2 and FiFi2 notations.

Harvey Deep-Sea is AC diesel-electric driven with four 2,250kW Caterpillar 3516C Tier 3 diesels powering twin Schottel SRP 2020 FP stern-mounted fully azimuthing fixed pitch Rudderpropellers and three 1,180kW Schottel STT4 transverse bow thrusters. This configuration gives the vessel a speed of 13 knots.

Forward of the timber-clad main deck

is a block containing a changing room with lockers, head and shower, alongside a workshop and several stores which in turn gives access forward to the port and starboard engine rooms. These have doors further forward giving access to two interlinked switchboard rooms, one of which has a head compartment.

The forecastle deck provides the majority of the communal living areas, with a large mess room to starboard directly opposite a galley, numerous pantries and stores. Further along the corridor is a gymnasium and sick bay with three beds and a head/shower. Abaft the mess is a 30-seater conference room/cinema, two offices and large laundry with two large linen lockers. The remaining berths, some 67 in number in 34 cabins, are all in en suite cabins on decks 1 and 2.

Control consoles fore and aft and a Kongsberg DP2 joystick system are features of the spacious bridge. There are coffee table-type seating areas in each bridge wing and central staircases both up and down. Above is a totally-enclosed helicopter reception room with seating for approximately a dozen. This structure, as well as providing a comfortable

waiting area, also provides a platform for the three FFS fire-fighting monitors.

staircase, was supplied and erected by Helidex Offshore.

Harvey Deep-Sea is to be equipped with an active heave-compensated, National Oilwell Varco 165-tonne knuckleboom subsea crane capable of lifting/setting at depths up to 3,050m. Final installation of the crane is set to take place as soon as the vessel reaches Harvey’s base in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Centrally located in the vessel is a 4.57m x 5.49m moon pool with a flush hatch over. This is surrounded by numerous tanks to accommodate 1,714m3 of fuel oil, 225m3 of drill water/ballast, 92m3 of potable water, 2,459m3 of liquid mud, 267m3 of methanol and 232m3 of drybulk mud. The aft deck has a clear area of 963m2.

Founded in 1955, Harvey Gulf International Marine is a marine transportation company that specialises in towing drilling rigs and providing offshore supply and multi-purpose support vessels for deepwater operations in the US Gulf of Mexico.

The long-running association between customer and builder is set to continue, since in June 2013 Harvey Gulf announced the contract signing for its 12th, 13th and 14th vessels to be constructed by Eastern – Harvey Sub-Sea, Harvey Blue-Sea and Harvey Intervention. This new STX Marine IMR-340H inspection, maintenance and repair vessel design measures nearly 100m in length and features a 250-tonne AHC subsea crane.

Eastern Shipbuilding Group is currently under contract constructing a total of 19 offshore supply vessels of similar size and complexity for customers both in the US and Brazil.
