Lucas Martin Executive Chef & Owner, K&L BistroAfter retiring from playing soccer professionally, Lucas began a career as a chef. He worked at Jardinière, Chapeau, the Rubicon and Hayes Street Grill, all top San Francisco restaurants. While working at Hayes Street Grill, he met his wife, Karen. In October 2001, they opened Sebastopol’s K&L Bistro, now a favorite Sonoma County dining destination.

Daniel Kedan Chef/Owner, Backyard RestaurantChef Daniel Kedan is a longtime supporter of Ceres. Daniel’s background includes stints at local favorites Ad Hoc, Solage, The General’s Daughter and Peter Lowell’s. He is a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America.

In 2012 Daniel and his wife, Marianna Gardenhire, opened Backyard Restaurant to rave reviews and accolades including the 2014 Michelin Bib Gourmand list. Most recently, they were invited to prepare a Sonoma County dinner at the prestigious James Beard House in New York City. Their passion for local food and sustainable communities is beautifully showcased in their menu and in their generosity to their community, including Ceres.

Barbara Hom Chef/Owner, Night Owl CateringBarbara is one of Northern California’s favorite chef-consultants. She served on the Sonoma County Harvest Fair Board of Directors, was a founder of the exclusive Sonoma County Chefs’ Tasting, managed the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone, taught in the culinary department at Santa Rosa Junior College, and consults with groups ranging from Geyser Peak Winery to Westin Hotels and FourSeasons. Her international experiences are reflected in her menus along with her Asian origins, European technique and California style, resulting in a cuisine she likes to call “Global Eclectic.”

Diego Maldonado & Vida Stamey Ceres Teen LeadersDiego has cooked at Backyard Restaurant in Forestville and is studying nutrition and dietetics at Santa Rosa Junior College. In the four years he has volunteered at Ceres, he has totally changed his diet and gained a personal understanding of the benefits of healthy eating. He is passionate about finishing his studies to become a Registered Dietician and helping others avoid illnesses related to poor diet. He hopes to own a farm-to-table restaurant someday that will amplify the importance of healthy eating.

Vida climbs mountains and runs half marathons for fun. She loves serving her community and has been home-schooled almost her entire life. The leadership opportunities she’s had at Ceres have changed Vida’s understanding of the power she has to make a difference in the world. Having not spent much time preparing meals before volunteering, she credits Ceres with teaching her everything she knows about cooking.

Chris Maritzen Prepared Foods & Bakery Team Leader, Whole Foods MarketBefore joining Whole Foods Market in 2007, Chris owned three California restaurants including La Toscana in Marin County. Deciding to explore other options outside of the restaurant lifestyle, he joined Whole Foods Market Sebastopol, and was influential in launching the Ceres Deli Salad Program, which has now expanded to 43 Whole Foods Markets.

Mission

We create health for people, communities and the planet through love, healing food and empowering the next generation.Key facets of our approach include:• Improve health outcomes, reduce health care

costs and build better long-term health by providing nourishing organic meals to low-income people with serious illness along with nutrition education and the caring support of the community;

• Empower a generation of healthy, engaged leaders by placing youth at the center of the organization as gardeners and chefs growing food and preparing meals for our clients, and by helping them develop the work-ready skills and empathy they need to thrive;

• Strengthen social relationships and sense of purpose – keys to longer and healthier lives – by engaging thousands of community members as volunteers and donors and creating authentic opportunities for connection and caring;

• Through engagement, education and modeling, increase consumption of locally grown organic whole foods to strengthen the health of people, local food systems, and the planet.

Healing Meals for Healthy Communities is our core program which provides 95,000 beautiful, delicious and nourishing organic meals each year, nutrition education and a community of support to individuals and their families throughout Sonoma and Marin Counties who are dealing with a serious illness. We deliver a week’s worth of meals for the whole family. All of the meals are prepared by our Teen Chefs working under the guidance of a team of adult mentors. The 450 teens a year who participate at our Sebastopol, Sonoma and San Rafael sites gain life and work-ready skills, learn about the vital link between diet and health, develop self-confidence and leadership, and discover the satisfaction of giving to others.In early 2016, Ceres will launch a fourth branch housed in Social Advocates for Youth’s new Dream Center in Santa Rosa, offering new program elements including culinary job training, college credit and a café and catering service. The program will serve Dream Center residents—youth who are transitioning from foster care and homelessness—as well as teens from surrounding high schools, with the meals they prepare nourishing local individuals and families in a health crisis.

Programs

National ProgramOver the past five years Ceres has supported nine additional communities in replicating our model by providing training, a program operations manual, an integrated data base system and ongoing support. Ceres-inspired programs are now operating in Summit, NJ; Bay Village, OH; Geneva, IL; Nashville, TN; Santa Cruz, CA; Eugene, OR, Grand Rapids, MI; Syracuse, NY and St. Helena, CA. We are in conversation with numerous other communities, with our next Affiliate Training scheduled for November.

EducationOur Education Programs extend the learning about food and health to our volunteers, clients, others dealing with illness, and the larger community:• Healing Foods Basics, open to the public on

a donation basis, provides an introduction to cooking and eating whole foods and the Ceres’ food philosophy. A filmed version of this course is also offered to each client, and available to our Affiliates for their clients.

• Each teen shift in the kitchen or garden includes a ½ hour education segment covering a wide variety of topics, from knife skills and how to read a food label, to local food systems and food insecurity.

• Nourishing Connections Cookbook: the Healing Power of Food & Community, our cookbook and nutrition guide, makes the Ceres Community Project experience available nationwide.

• Nutrition for Wellness classes, offered in partnership with West County Health Centers and Alexander Valley Health clinic, provide clinic patients living with or at risk of developing a chronic disease with practical, hands-on classes and cooking demonstrations.

• Our website provides recipes, nutrition tips and information on our food philosophy.

Accomplisments• Since March 2007, we’ve provided 360,000

healing meals to clients throughout Sonoma and Marin Counties.

• More than 1,500 teens from 86 schools, foster care facilities, group homes, continuation schools and treatment programs have worked in our kitchens and gardens.

• Improving eating habits: our clients, teens, and adult volunteers all report increased consumption of fruit and vegetables, and eating less processed, fast and sugar-laden foods as a result of what they’ve learned from Ceres.

• Hundreds of people each year participate in our Education Programs, and more than 7,000 copies of our Nourishing Connections Cookbook are in kitchens across the US as well as in several other countries.

• During 2014, 876 volunteers (410 teens and 466 adults) contributed 43,391 hours of time and expertise to our work valued at $785,000.

Bidding & Checking Out

How to BidEach silent auction item has a Bid Form near it on the auction tables. To bid, clearly print your name and Bidder Number (shown on the back of your program) and list the amount you would like to bid. Each Bid Form includes a starting bid and information about the dollar increment that bids can be increased. Check back often if you are interested in an item and use a new line to increase your bid as needed.

If you are committed to an item, consider using the Buy It Now option, available for most of our auction items. Simply fill in your name and Bidder Number at the bottom of the bid sheet where it says “Buy it Now.” Note the preset price you’re agreeing to, then let one of the volunteers know that you have purchased the item so it can be removed from the display.

Silent Auction RulesThe minimum bid and the bidding increment for each item are specified on the bid sheet. To be valid, bids must comply with these minimums and be written legibly. Bidding constitutes a legal contract to purchase that Silent Auction item at the price you stated if your bid is the winning bid. The last (highest) valid bid entered prior to the table closing will be the winning bid. When a bidder chooses the Buy It Now option, no higher bids will be accepted.

Silent Auction ClosingThe Silent Auction will close at the end of the reception, shortly after 6:00. No bids may be placed after the Silent Auction closes! Make sure that you check your bids just before the auction closes so you do not lose items that you want, or use the Buy It Now option to guarantee that you win.

Live Auction RulesWhen bidding, please raise your auction booklet to be identified. If a group is bidding on one item, please designate one person to place your combined bid. Auction items will be awarded to one purchaser only. A bid acknowledged by the auctioneer is a legal contract to purchase the item.

Paying For & Picking up Your ItemsThroughout the evening any items that you have purchased or won will be added to your invoice and organized for pickup.

After the Live Auction closes we will post a list of all bidder numbers who have items to pick up at Check Out. If your bidder number is listed, please visit Check Out and pick up your items before you leave the event as this saves us important staff time. If you gave our event staff an imprint of your credit card at check-in, and you only purchased Golden Tickets and/or Pantry Keys, or contributed to Fund a Need, you do not need to check out. We will mail you a donation acknowledgement letter within the next month.

Terms of SaleUnless otherwise noted, all auction items expire within one year (August 15, 2016) or on the date stated on the bid sheet (most relevant for sports tickets, etc.). There will be no exchanges or refunds. Ceres Community Project does not make any expressed or implied warranties or guarantees on auction items regarding quality or value of items or services. Ceres Community Project has attempted to describe and catalog all items correctly, but all items are offered and sold “AS IS.” We have attempted to be as accurate and inclusive about restrictions as possible: however all items and services are subject to the terms and conditions specified by the donors. Reservations for trips and vacation accommodations must be mutually arranged with the donor unless otherwise noted.

Tax InformationThe excess of the amount you pay for an auction item over its fair market value may be deductible as a charitable contribution for tax purposes. All Fund a Need pledges are eligible for tax deduction. Golden Tickets, Game Tickets and Pantry Keys are considered raffle purchases, and are not tax-deductible. Please check with your tax advisor for specific advice on this topic. Certain auction items are subject to sales tax, which will be collected at check out.

You will receive a donation acknowledgement letter within one month following the event. This letter will provide the total you paid above the fair market value of the event itself as well as any items that you purchased.

They’ve created a memorable evening for eight at their winery in Sebastopol’s Barlow, showcasing seasonal local foods paired with rarely available past vintages of their best wines.

After a tour and barrel tasting with your host Chris Costello, a five-course feast will await you. Chef Mark Maliki will combine foraged ingredients with those lovingly grown and crafted, all from within a stone’s throw of where Kosta Browne’s grapes are grown. From Sonoma County Meat Company to Bohemian Creamery, you’ll taste the best of Sonoma County alongside library wines going back many vintages. Chris plans to raid the wine archive to make sure that this evening will be a celebration of food and wine you and your friends will talk about for years to come! At the end of the evening, four magnums of Kosta Browne wines will accompany the lucky winner home. These are wines that cannot be purchased and are only made available in support of organizations like Ceres, whose values Kosta Browne admires and shares.

Auction Package: Kosta Browne Food and Wine experience for eight including tour and barrel tasting, five course dinner, wine pairings from the Kosta Browne library, and four magnums of rare Kosta Browne Pinot Noir. Fund a Need

where they’ll learn to grow food and prepare 35,000 meals a year for low-income people with illness, gaining important life and work-ready skills and discovering their power to make a difference. For those interested in or needing more formal job training – at the Dream Center site as well as at Ceres’ other program sites – we’ll offer a 12-week culinary training program along with paid internships in our catering operation, on-site café and organic food production garden. This is a critically important new addition to Ceres’ services in Sonoma County aimed at better connecting youth to both college and careers.Plese help us make dreams come true for thousands of young people, and for families who desperately need our support by pledging generously during Fund a Need!

Triple Value for your Donations

We turn every dollar you donate into $3 worth of value. Each dollar supports client meals and does double duty by funding a young person to gain the skills and confidence they need to succeed. And thanks to our generous network of volunteers and donors, we double that value again through donated service hours and in-kind donations.

Help bring Ceres to the Dream Center in 2016We’ve got ambitious plans for 2016: to open our newest program site within the walls of Social Advocates for Youth’s new Dream Center in Santa Rosa. Were committed to maximizing the difference we can make for young people and for low-income families struggling with the dual challenges of poverty and illness. As pledge signers to the Portrait of Sonoma County – a 2014 report that highlights the disparities in outcomes that exist in Sonoma County – our goal is to insure that our programs reach those who face the greatest barriers to health and success. And as supporters of Sonoma County’s Cradle to Career Initiative – a set of goals outlining the investments all young people need for success – we know that connecting young people to their value as part of the community and to a career or college path are critical steps in helping them live a healthy, happy and productive life.At the Dream Center, Ceres will offer our highly effective Youth Development Program to youth enrolled in SAY programs as well as youth from the surrounding community. All youth will begin by volunteering in our after-school program
