Harvest planning in NSW State forests
NSW State forests provide timber, employment, habitat, clean air and a place to be.
Before timber is harvested from NSW State forests, detailed harvest plans
are prepared. next
Forests in NSW
Each State forest is divided into compartments with a harvest plan normally dedicated to one compartment.Try your hand at harvest planning. Click on the different features on this map to see what forest values are protected from harvesting or click image below to begin.

Habitat
Ecologists undertake day and night surveys to identify threatened plant and animal species. Experts determine what buffers or space needs to be left around these animals to ensure their habitat is retained and they continue to live in the forest.

Research
In this area a research trial looking at what helps trees grow tall and strong has been excluded from harvesting

Waterways
Harvesting is not permitted around waterways for up to 45m on either side to ensure water quality and avoid erosion of the soil.

Roads
Roads are maintained during harvesting to reduce the risk of soil getting into waterways. Roads are used to get timber out of the forest and to the mill but once harvesting is finished they are used for recreation like four-wheel-driving.

Rainforest
In NSW areas of rainforest and high conservation value old growth forest are protected and not harvested for timber.

Regeneration
On average 2% of State forests in NSW are harvested for timber each year. Many State forests have been harvested several times over the last 100 years – regenerating to provide a supply of timber and today and into the future.
2011 in the International Year of Forests. Celebrate NSW State forests and all they offer.
