L’ÉCRAN : ENTRE ICI ET AILLEURS

L’Écran : Entre ici et ailleurs présente des films et des vidéos d’artistes internationaux de différentes générations qui explorent des sujets politiques et sociaux tout en développant une investigation continue de l’image. Se basant sur la tradition du cinéma, du film expérimental ou structurel, ces œuvres engendrent une réflexion sur les « politiques de l’image ». À travers un montage spécifique, résultant d’une accumulation successive d’images ou un cadrage simple statique et frontal, ces films et vidéos détournent les formes filmiques conventionnelles pour explorer le statut de l’image et ses possibilités.

Ce programme qui se poursuit pendant une année présentera successivement les œuvres de Harun Farocki (Allemagne), Leticia Ramos (Brésil), Laure Prouvost (France), Alexander Apóstol (Venezuela), Vasco Araújo (Portugal), LaToya Ruby Frazier (USA), Derek Boshier (GB).

L’Écran : Entre ici et ailleurs rassemble des œuvres qui portent sur des géographies diverses aux spécificités sociales distinctes. Le titre fait également référence à l’artiste Harun Farocki, disparu cette année, et dont la double vidéo projection Comparison via a Third (Comparaison via un tiers), 2007, ouvre ce programme. Tout au long de sa carrière de réalisateur et vidéaste, Harun Farocki s’est intéressé à une exploration d’un « entre deux », à la relation entre un travail incisif du montage et des textes, entre image et langage.

Réalisateur, artiste et théoricien, Harun Farocki, disparu cet été 2014, est une des figures majeures du documentaire. Ses films explorent des sujets tels que la guerre, le système du travail et de la production, les technologies de surveillance ou encore le rôle des mass média dans la société contemporaine. À travers un montage spécifique, il détoure les formes conventionnelles du film documentaire. À partir des années 1990, Harun Farocki a développé un travail d’installations vidéo qui prend souvent la forme de projections multiples. L’installation permet d’approfondir son investigation incisive de l’image et d’élaborer un dispositif spatial qui offre au spectateur une autre forme de relation à la temporalité filmique. Dans la double projection vidéo Comparison via a Third (Comparaison via un tiers), 2007, Harun Farocki questionne les processus d’automatisation et de rationalisation du travail à travers la production de briques dans les sociétés traditionnelles et industrialisées. Des images tournées dans des usines en Afrique et en Inde sont juxtaposées à des images d’usines européennes. À la présentation en progression linéaire de procédés de fabrication de plus en plus perfectionnée succède un montage d’images qui interrompt cette lecture. Ce montage fait de répétitions utilise l’image pour commenter l’image précédente et par ce procédé, impose au spectateur un exercice de réflexion qui le pousse à tirer lui-même ses propres conclusions. Comparison via a Third s’ouvre ainsi à des relations d’interprétations infinies, non ancrées.

L’ÉCRAN : ENTRE ICI ET AILLEURS /THE SCREEN: BETWEEN HERE AND ELSEWHERE

L’Écran : Entre ici et ailleurs (The Screen: Between Here and Elsewhere) presents films and videos by international artists of different generations who are exploring political and social subjects while developing an ongoing investigation of the image. Based on the tradition of cinema and experimental film-making, these works generate a reflection about the “politics of the image”. By way of specific editing, resulting from a successive accumulation of images or a simple static and frontal framing method, these works subvert conventional film forms to explore the status of the image and its possibilities.

This programme will continue all year long, succesively presenting artworks by Harun Farocki (Germany), Leticia Ramos (Brazil), Laure Prouvost (France), Alexander Apóstol (Venezuela), Vasco Araújo (Portugal), LaToya Ruby Frazier (USA), Derek Boshier (GB).

L’Écran : Entre ici et ailleurs (The Screen: Between Here and Elsewhere) brings together works which focus on diverse geographies with distinct social specific features. The title also refers to the artist Harun Farocki, who died last summer and whose two-channel video installation Comparison via a Third, 2007, opens this programme. Throughout his career as a film-maker, Harun Farocki was interested in the exploration of an “interstice”, an “in-between”, and the relation between an incisive editing task and texts, somewhere between image and language.

Film-maker, artist and theorist, Harun Farocki, who died last summer, was one of the major figures of documentary film. His work explores subjects such as war, the system of labour and production, surveillance technologies, and the role of the mass media in contemporary society. Through specific editing methods, he subverts the conventional forms of documentary film. In the 1990s, Harun Farocki developed work involving video installations, often taking the form of multiple screen projections. The video installation process enabled him to further develop his incisive investigation of the image and to work out a spatial arrangement offering the viewer another form of relation to filmic temporality. In the two-channel video installation Comparison via a Third, 2007, Harun Farocki questions the processes of the automation and rationalisation of work through the production of bricks in traditional and industrialised societies. Images shot in factories in Africa and India are juxtaposed with images of European factories. The gradual linear presentation of ever more perfected manufacturing procedures are followed by a succession of images which interrupts this reading. The montage made up of repetitions uses the image to comment on the previous image and through this procedure imposes on spectators an exercise of reflection which prompts them to draw their own conclusions. Comparison via a Third is thus open to relations of infinite, unfixed interpretations.

Ses films et installations vidéo ont été montrés à la Biennale de Venise, 2013 ; à la Documenta (X and XII), Kassel, 1997 et 2007 ; à la Tate Modern, 2010. Ses expositions personnelles incluent PROA Foundation, Buenos Aires, 2013 ; le Museum of Art de Tel Aviv, 2013 ; le MoMA, New York, 2011 ; le Beriut Art Center, Beirut, 2011 ; Raven Row, Londres, 2010 ; le Ludwig Museum, Cologne, 2009.
