Dear Parents, As this is a short week, this edition will be more a bulletin than a newsletter, and therefore is much briefer. I hope all Hartwell families enjoyed Cup Day yesterday and the fun and festivities that go with it. Every year when Cup Day arrives it seems like a signal that the end of the school year is just around the corner. We have almost finished employing staff and ordering supplies etc. and graduation plans for the Year 6 students are now underway. Student Achievement Congratulations to Riki Lethbridge who has been selected to represent Victoria in the School Sports Australia National Diving Championships. Riki will travel to Adelaide for this competition in December. We are very proud of Riki’s achievements and wish him all the best for this competition. The Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads (APSMO) is a competition for students in Years 5 and 6 of primary schools and Years 7 and 8 of secondary schools from around Australia and New Zealand. Each year thousands of schools participate in the competition. It is aimed at challenging participants' maths problem solving abilities in a creative manner - as opposed to simply reaching a solution using a prescribed method. There are five Olympiads over a five month time period. Each Olympiad comprises five questions which must be completed in 30 minutes. The Maths Games is focused on encouraging students to challenge themselves and develop their own abilities, whilst working with teachers and fellow students to enhance their skills in this area. Congratulations to the eighty Year 5 and 6 students who participated in the Maths Olympiad or Maths Games this year. All students worked hard to prepare for these challenges and performed creditably. In particular we commend:

Social Service On Friday the SRC will be running a social service day. The aim of the day is to raise money for Sea Shepherd Australia - a non-profit conservation organisation whose mission is to end the destruction of habitat and to protect wildlife in the world’s oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species. Students can wear ‘free dress’ and we ask that each student brings a $2 gold coin to support this fundraiser. Hopefully we will raise lots of money for this great cause. Icy Poles for Sale in the Canteen Icy poles will be on sale for 50 cents at the canteen on Tuesdays and Fridays after school. The Year 6 parents and students have organised this and all proceeds will go towards the Year 6 Graduation. This is a wonderful service for the school community as the weather becomes hotter. Cancellation – Meet the Principal Team In a recent newsletter I invited you to a Principal Parent Morning Tea on Friday this week- 10 November. Unfortunately we will have to cancel this meeting as Pip Turner and I together with Margaret Aitken will be at a meeting for Literacy leaders. We will re-schedule in the next few weeks- either one morning or towards the end of the school day. My aim is for parents to meet Pip and also Adrian O’Connor as some of you with younger children don’t really know Adrian either. Reminders
Some parents have already sent us their Working
With Children Check. Please make sure you go
online soon to organise a WWCC as it will be
necessary if you intend assisting in the classroom,
canteen or uniform shop; with swimming or on
excursions etc. next year.
Thank you to those who have notified me if their
children will not be attending Hartwell in 2018. This
is very helpful and has enabled me to begin putting
in place systems and plans for next year. If you have
not yet let me know that your child will be leaving
could you please do so this week.
‘Ready, Set, Go’ resumes next week, November
17 from 9.40-10.40am in the Prep learning
community.
Hartwell P. S. “Sunsmart-approved” hats
available from the uniform shop are a compulsory
aspect of school uniform in terms 1 and 4. Please
work with us to promote and encourage appropriate
sun smart behaviour and habits. The children’s
safety and health is an important issue for us all.

Kris Moore Principal PE UPDATE JUNIOR BOYS ALL STARS It was an exciting day for our Junior Boys All Star Team who competed in the Hoop Time Regional Finals last Tuesday. The standard of basketball, as you would expect, was extremely high and our boys were very competitive. The team finished the rounds with two wins, one draw and a loss which saw the team win through to the finals. In a cut-throat match against our hometown rivals Ashburton, it was a tough match. Ashburton came out firing and could not miss. A little overwhelmed, the HPS boys composed themselves and matched their opponents for the remainder of the match but unfortunately went down by eight points. This was a great effort to make the finals at the regional level and the boys should be very proud of their efforts. We are very grateful to Andrew Hind for coaching the team, thank you. Thank you to all of the parents for supporting the team and transporting players to the venue. Well done to: Ed H, Ed W, Oscar S, Jono M, Riley H, Markus N, Ben F, Griffin A, Hugo S and Alex W. GO HARTWELL!
SENIOR GIRLS ALL STARS Best wishes to our Senior Girls who will compete in their Regional Hoop Time Final this Friday. We wish them well.
TENNIS TRIALS A reminder that tennis trials for selected Year 4 & 5 students are being held this Friday at Burwood Tennis Club at 4pm. Please see me if you have not already and wish to trial.
Have a great week.

For this to happen though we need helpers! If you are interested in organising the shop please let me know ASAP. We usually run the pop-up shop on a Friday afternoon from 3pm onwards. Please come and see me if you’re keen to help out (I’m in the same office space as Lisa).
