Accepting the challengeHUHS senior winsnational piano competitionBY THOMAS J.MCKILLENMANAGING EDITOR
After winning awards at the statelevel for piano play for the past sever-al years, Monica Bertucci was honoredon the national level earlier thisspring.
Bertucci, a senior at Hartford UnionHigh School, was the 2017 StillmanKelley Competition winner forWisconsin. She the went on to win the2017 Thelma Byrum Piano Competitionaward. For the competitions, shechoose "Tempest" Piano Sonata No. 17in D minor, Opus 31, No 2, IIIAllegretto by Beethoven; Excursions,Opus 20, No 1 by Barber; andIntermezzo in A Major, Opus 118, No 2by Brahms.
In response to questions submittedby the Express News, Betucci said thatto prepare for the competitions shebegan look at repertoire in March of2016.She then chose her pieces overthe next two months and was practic-ing, drilling and memorizing sincethen. Bertucci submitted a 15 to 20minute DVD of her performances. It
was sent to the state chairman of thecompetition, who then forwarded it tothe national competition after her per-formance won at the state level.
Bertucci said she was "shocked"when she learned she won.
"I entered this competition to real-ly challenge myself and step out of mycomfort zone. I picked some reallyambitious pieces for this competitionand practiced them hundreds if notthousands of times," she said. "I foundout I won the state competition abouta month after I submitted my DVD, andfound out about the national competi-tion about a month after that. I wasreally excited because I submitted myDVD knowing I performed my best, butnot at all expecting to win."
The recent honors come after tak-ing the top honor at the 2015 and2016 Wisconsin Federation of MusicState Festival for both solos and duets. She also won first place at the 2016Milwaukee Area Piano TeachersAssociation solo competition.
Bertucci began playing piano short-ly after her fifth birthday and studiedwith her mom for 11 years beforeswitching to Janet Acker in 2014.See ‘PIANO’ PAGE 11

Dear Dr. Winter, I have been traveling back andforth to Chicago to have my dental work done andhave a lot of problems! My crowns keep falling offand the dentist glues them on only to have them comeoff a week or two later. I have many missing teeth andneed teeth to talk as I am in customer service andsales! Can you help me with my problem this is anemergency!
Dear S. I would be happy to get you in to evaluateyour situation. When people have severe dentalproblems and they can no longer reliably cementcrowns it is usually indicative of severe occlusaldisease and decay. When you are missing teeth, theremaining teeth must pick up the slack of chewingeverything without their teammates. This can createforces that overload the teeth and cause fractures. Ifyou have a lack of tooth structure to re-cement thesecrowns the teeth may require root canals, posts andcrown-lengthening to create a base that would supporta new crown. This is often expensive and comes withno guarantees as to how long it will last. Anotheroption may be to place implants to restore the missingteeth and the fractured root tips.
This is a controversial topic in dentistry. How hardshould we try to save a tooth, a root and how muchmoney should we spend before we decide it may bebest to remove the tooth and replace it with a dentalimplant. So, let’s discuss this.
Performing a root canal will take the nerve out of atooth and fill the root canal with a rubber like materialcalled gutta-percha. Some of this rubber is removedand a titanium post is cemented into the root to give ananchor for the filling or build-up of the tooth. Next, bone is removed to reveal clean fresh root to cement acrown on to. These procedures can add up to a fewthousand dollars with no guarantee as to how long thiswill last. This needs to be compared to the removal ofthe tooth, placing bone in the socket and having atitanium implant placed; which can be the same cost asthe procedures to “maybe” save the tooth.
So, it is incumbent upon the dentist to discuss alloptions, costs, advantages and disadvantages to comeup with a treatment plan for the patient that also
provides an “Upgrade path” if one is needed. It isimportant to also look at the remaining teeth! If otherteeth have severe gum disease or bone loss or if theyare not restorable a more comprehensive treatmentplan should be discussed! It is not prudent to spend alot of money on one or two teeth if several others area year or two away from needing extractions as well!
We invite our readers to go to our new website andread Dr. Richard Winter’s publications on full mouthimplant dentistry, Upgradeable Dentistry and otherexamples of how to sequentially help people with amyriad of dental problems at a budget and pace theycan afford at www.hamptondentalassociates.com
