Man From Independence
I felt like the moon, the stars, and all the planets had fallen on me. is what I told the
reporters when Franklin D. Roosevelt died. I wasnt prepared to become president. My name is
Harry S. Truman, I was the 33rd president. People don't just call me harry though, I have been
called The Man From Independence, Giveem Hell Harry, and even Haberdasher Harry. People
have described me as courageous, decisive, fair-minded, blunt, adaptable and determined. One of
my famous quotes is there is always another crisis around the corner, which means that when
your stuck on a problem there will always be another one that you can work on in the mean time.
I am well known for having a sign on my desk that says the buck stops here which pretty much
means that I take all responsibility for my actions.
I was born in Lamar, Missouri in my parents bedroom on may 8, 1884. My family
eventually moved to Independence, Missouri where I grew up. I am the oldest of three. My
brothers name is John and my sisters name is Mary Jane. My parents names are John Anderson
Truman and Martha Ellen young Truman. When i was born my parents couldn't decide on a
middle name, they settled with S because it was both my grandfathers middle initial. When I was
8 I became very nearsighted, I had to wear really thick glasses. I wouldn't play outside because I
was afraid my glasses would break so I read, I ended up reading every book in our public library.
Soon after when i was10 I got a disease called diphtheria it caused me to be paralyzed for a
while and during that time i had to be wheeled around in a baby carriage. I was treated with

ipecac and whiskey and became very disgusted with both.
I never went to college, instead I worked on the family farm. After that I joined the
Missouri National Guard in 1905-1911. I also became a combat officer in World War 1. When I
went to war I would bring 2 extra pairs of glasses with me in case mine broke. When I returned
home from World War 1 I proposed to my wife Elizabeth Bess Virginia Wallace. I had been in
love with her since kindergarten. We later had a daughter who we named Mary Margret. The
three of us spent so much time together that some people even called us The Three Musketeers.
Becoming president wasn't the only political thing I ever did, I was also elected judge of Jackson
County, Missori in 1922 and was elected to be a U.S. senate in 1934.
I was 60 years old when I became president. I served from 1945-1953. For my first
term I was without a vice president, this is because I had been vice president under Franklin D.
Roosevelt, my second term vice president was Alben William Barkley. Also i was a democratic
president. During my time as president I was the first to do many things. First of all I was the
first president to have a speech on TV. Second, I was the first to travel underwater in a modern
submarine, I was the most accomplished musician to be president, I played the piano. I also
successfully ended world war 2 by being the first leader to authorize the use of an atomic bomb.
Near the end of world war 2 japan would not surrender so the U.S. bombed the cities Hiroshima
and Nagasaki in japan. Once the war was officially over I helped create the United Nations.
Another one of my accomplishments is that i designed the current presidential seal.
I died on December 26, 1972 due to heart failure. I had been in the hospital for a while
before it happened. I was buried in one of the courtyards at the Truman Library and when my
wife died she was buried next to me. I think that the people of America will probably remember
me for ending World War 2 but if they remember me for other reasons I hope they are good

memories not bad ones.
