(Heb.11:4)

H. A. Ironside

Died

15th January 1951

Christianity is not just repeating John 3:16 or Acts 16:31; it is

yielding the heart and the life to Christ.   Grace is the very opposite of merit... Grace is not only

undeserved favor, but it is favor, shown to the one who has

deserved the very opposite.

T hat which the Holy Spirit delights to do is to form Christ in us.

But if the Holy Spirit is grieved, He must first occupy us with our

sins and failures, until we are again brought to the place where

we can confess our sins.  T hen He is once more free to direct our

gaze to Christ and continue to form Christ in us.

We need to realize that in all things our first duty and

responsibility is to God Himself.

Nothing is sadder than profession without possession.   Jesus Christ is not a problem, He is the solution to every

problem for life, for death, and for eternity.

Among Christians generally there are failures that shock and

wound the sensibilities of many, occurring from time to time,

through a lack of watching unto prayer.

Real worship is that of the heart.    T he Gospel is not good advice to be obeyed, it is good news to be

believed.   All the work that God has committed to men has been

accomplished through imperfect instrumentalities. All servants

(except one ² the One) come short in something and most inmany things. Nevertheless God designs to use them.

T ruth mixed with error is equivalent to all error, except that it is

more innocent looking and, therefore, more dangerous.

T ime is given us to use in view of eternity.    T ruth alone will not preserve if there be not corresponding

exercise as to living in its power, and being controlled thereby.   God is looking for broken men who have judged themselves in

the light of the cross of Christ. When He wants anything done,

He takes up men who have come to the end of themselves, whose

confidence is not in themselves, but in God.   No one ever lost out by excessive devotion to Christ.   We would worry less if we praised more.  T hanksgiving is the

enemy of discontent and dissatisfaction.

I am fully convinced in my own mind that the doctrine of

repentance is the missing note in many otherwise orthodox and

fundamentally sound circles today.

Repentance is the very opposite of meritorious experience. It is

the confession that one is utterly without merit, and if he is ever

saved at all it can only be through the merits of our Lord Jesus

Christ, 'who gave himself a ransom for all.' Here is firm footing

for the soul who realizes that all self-effort is but sinking sand.

Christ alone is the Rock of our salvation.

If lips and life do not agree, the testimony will not amount to

much.   He [the Holy Spirit] wants me to bring everything - the great

things, and the little things - the perplexing conditions and the

trying circumstances - into the presence of God and leave them

there.   It is not only that sin consists in doing evil, but in not doing the

good that we know.

Pride is a barrier to all spiritual progress .    T he Christian is called out from the world. His life is not to be as

the lives of those about him.    T he greatest mistake any Christian can make is to substitute his

own will for the will of God.   You could not be saved through any effort of your own, but now

that you are saved it is necessary for you to put forward every

effort you can to glorify Him.

Christ is a substitute for everything, but nothing is a substitute

for Christ.

T he Christ of the Bible is certainly not the Christ of any false

"-ism." Each of the cults has its hideous caricature of our lovely

Lord.

T he great trouble is, we are so unreal, so self-satisfied, so little

exercised as to our true condition in His sight.

No sacrifice should be too great for Him who gave Himself for us.

What is needed everywhere is a great revival of decided gospelpreaching, pressing home on the consciences of men and women

their lost condition, despite church membership, if they have not

personally received the Lord Jesus Christ.   It is well to remember that reading books about the Bible is a

very different thing to searching the Word for oneself.   Have you believed the Gospel? Have you put your trust in it; is it

the confidence of your soul? Or have you been trusting in

something else? If you have been resting in anything short of the

Christ who died, who was buried, who rose again, I plead with

you, turn from every other fancied refuge, and flee to Christ

today. Repent ye, and believe the Gospel.

¶Friend, remember that it is better to read 1 quote 10 times

(meditatively) than to read 10 quotes 1 time (superficially).·
