Complete StreetsCitywide policy to create safer and more comfortable streets for all

users – pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists – and particularly for themost vulnerable – children, the elderly and persons with disabilities.

Project Corridor

Harrison

• 0.90 mile in length

• Connects UIC to the South Loop

• Parallels CTA Blue Line, connects to CTA Red Line

• Multiple CTA Bus Routes throughout

• DIVVY Stations at Canal Street and State Street

• Crosstown Bike Route in the Streets for Cycling Plan 2020



Existing Conditions - Pedestrians

• Crosswalks inconsistently marked

• Undefined travel lanes make it difficult to cross the street



• Popular east/west bike route

•Bicycle-friendly bridge

• No on-street accommodations

• Sidewalk riding is common

Existing Conditions - Bicyclists



• Undefined lane markings on east and west end of project

encourage high speeds and/or weaving/passing on the right• Traffic signals/turn lanes not optimized for predominant

movements

• Minimal on-street parking

Existing Conditions - Motorists



• Improve traffic safety

• 554 crashes within project limits between

2007 and 2011• 1 fatal and 19 injury pedestrian

crashes (36 total pedestrian crashes)

• 3 serious injury bicycle crashes

(28 total bicycle crashes)

• 490 motor vehicle crashes, including

44 injury crashes

• Bike/ped crashes = 48% of injury

crashes, but only 11.5% of all crashes

• Increase in transportation choices

• Implementation of the Streets for Cycling

Plan 2020

• Balance the roadway

• Clearly defined space for all users
