Record of Experience Introduction
Introduction
You are now on the road that will lead to your qualification as a Dental Nurse. You may just have started on, or be part way through, a training course accredited by the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN) working towards the NEBDNNational Diploma in Dental Nursing qualification.
In order to gain the qualification, which entitles you to apply for registration as a Dental Care Professional with the General Dental Council (GDC) in the UnitedKingdom, you must:
Successfully complete a work-based Record of Experience (RoE)
Successfully complete a written examination
Successfully complete a practical examination containing Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE)
The purpose of the RoE is to ensure student dental nurses receive formative assessments carried out in the workplace to an approved standard. All those involved in the formative assessment process must adhere to the benchmarks and performance criteria set out in the Record of Experience Marking Guide. Formative assessment provides feedback during a training programme and addresses the question ‘what does the trainee need to do to improve?’ Whereas summative assessment happens at the end of a training programme (e.g. final examination), both are inter-related, and the evidence gathered during completion of the RoE will be used to inform summative assessment.
The Record of Experience (RoE)
This document is an evidence based portfolio which provides a formal assessment of knowledge, skills, behaviours and attitudes in the workplace under normal working conditions. Students must complete the RoE with support from their employer and course provider to a satisfactory standard in order to enter theNEBDN National Diploma in Dental Nursing examination.
This RoE contains five units, each relating to the work of a Dental Nurse, based onLearning Outcomes as promoted by the GDC. In order to complete each unit, students must complete a number of Practical Experience Record Sheets (PERS) related to individual tasks. During completion of the PERS, students will be observed and assessed by other members of the dental team and have the opportunity to reflect on the process to enhance the learning experience.
Reflection is particularly important as it gives you the opportunity to consider what you did, why you did it and whether it could have been done differently. It also gives you the opportunity to question, to examine, and thus gain maximum learning from your experience. Some of the reflection will be about you, about how you felt and why you felt that way.
NATIONAL EXAMINING BOARD FOR DENTAL NURSESCompany Number 5580200 Charity Number 1112331
Your Course Provider will assess your performance to set criteria provided by NEBDN to ensure a standardised learning programme is followed for each student.
In order to complete each unit, students must complete a number of Practical Experience Record sheets related to individual tasks across a range of patients.
Good luck!

PRINCIPLES OF GOOD PRACTICE
The following principles of good practice should be followed when completing the Record of Experience:
• Effective communication should be established with other members of the oral health care team.
• The health and safety of patients and the oral health care team as a whole should be promoted.
Each task will be carried out, where appropriate, during the normal treatment of a patient or, if this is not possible, in a simulated situation.
Skills in more than one area may be demonstrated during the care of a single patient.
Your witness should have expertise and experience in relation to the particular procedure/task which is being carried out. They must also possess a suitable qualification and be registered with the GDC (or other regulatory body in the case of a radiographer).
