Conservative Leader Stephen Harp-er adopted a world-weary primeministerial presence at the tele-vised leaders debates last night tochide his political opponents tostop the “bickering.”
“What we are asking — in anelection we didn’t want, in an elec-tion Canadians didn’t want —we’re asking Canadians to makethe decision: Do you want to havethis kind of bickering, do you wantto have another election in twoyears? Or do you want a focus onthe economy?” an unflappableHarper asked at the debate’s mid-point.
Liberal Leader Michael Ignati-eff shot back: “There he goes againwith this word ‘bickering.’ This isa debate, Mr. Harper. This is ademocracy.”
Harper was slapped from theopening exchange of the evening, when Bloc Québécois Leader Gilles
Duceppe thanked him for takinghis first question of the campaign
from a citizen.Harper has been running a clas-
sic front-runner’s campaign, withonly limited, tightly scripted inter-actions with the public.
And NDP Leader Jack Layton, another seasoned veteran of tele-vised leaders’ debates, landedblows literally left and right as hetook on both Ignatieff and Harperin turns.
After ripping Ignatieff’s Liber-als for supporting Harper’s minor-ity government in a number of keyvotes, Layton turned to the podiumon his right.
“In fact, Mr. Harper, if it hadn’tbeen for him supporting you allthis time, I’d have to be lendingyou my crutch so your governmentcould’ve stayed in power,” said Lay-ton, who recently had hip surgery.THE CANADIAN PRESS
