The Town Mayor, Councillor Rosemary Farmer was thrilled at hearing the news. She said “I am delighted that Harpenden Town Council has been awarded our third Green Flag in a row. This is a tribute to the hard work put into the management of the Common by Harpenden Town Council and a reflection of the contributions made by our volunteers” Green Flag Awards recognise and reward the best parks in the country, and Harpenden Common stood out, after impressing the judges with excellent facilities including well managed green space, signage and amenities. This year is a milestone year for the awards as the number of Green Flag and Green Pennant Award winners has passed 1,000 for the first time. The win comes at an exciting time in the development of the Green Flag Awards that are now run by environmental charity, Keep Britain Tidy, GreenSpace and BTCV, who have been inundated by applications as parks value the coveted award. St Albans City & District Council’s Emerging Core Strategy – Shaping our Community Consultation is an opportunity for residents to express their views on crucial issues that affect the long-term core planning strategy for the St Albans District. This Strategy will guide other documents that make up the Local Development Framework (LDF) (currently the Local Plan) on the development and growth of the District. Failure to respond will effectively signify to The District Council your agreement to the Strategy. The Core Strategy covers many crucial issues for Harpenden including the green belt, housing, schools, employment, transport and much more. Visit www.stalbans.gov.uk, your local Council offices or the library to see the full Strategy for details of the policies and implications for Harpenden. Your views are important and will help influence the way the District will develop and change up to 2026. Please complete the full consultation questionnaire by 28 September 2009. The Town Council is keen to hear your views about the Emerging Core Strategy. We also want your comments on the proposal to allow developers to build 300 new homes on Green Belt land to the North of Harpenden. This proposal will increase the pressure on the availability of school places and increase traffic congestion in theTown. You can respond to this issue by returning the reply card on the leaflet that the Town Council has circulated to each household in Harpenden. Young Miscellany is a Traditional FolkDance Group based in Harpenden, whopractice at Park Hall in Leyton Road. They are currently looking for newmembers, see details of their Open Daybelow. This is what two of their youngdancers and their leader have to say:-“I’m Alice, 13 years old and I joinedYoung Miscellany (YM) four years ago.YM started in 1992 and is based inHarpenden. Usually children in the groupare aged 5-16. Members come from as faraway as Ilford but mainly reside inHertfordshire and Bedfordshire. So, what do we do? As is in the name, weperform a ‘miscellany’ of traditionaldances; country, all types of Morris, Stave,Broom, Step-clog, Maypole and Rapper, asword dance that the older members onlylearned recently, and many of the youngermembers aspire to dance. We are invited to a variety of festivals, todisplay our dances. The season usuallystarts at Saint George’s Day in Luton, inApril, and our last is at Ely in July, withour personal favourites Rochester Sweepsand Winchester Mayfest in between. One of the most exciting things for ourgroup was appearing on nationaltelevision! The BBC show ‘Level Up’ madea short film about YM, and some picturesare still on the BBC website!” (Alice).

Marius aged 10 says “We all love displays, you go out for a day, there’s a greatatmosphere, with the music, everyonecheering, it’s a nice feeling, with everyonesmiling. You get to see other sides doingdifferent dances, and sometimes we dancewith them. Our side is different, becausewe do different dances, so if you don’t likeone thing, you can do something else thatyou like more, and it’s not the same overand over.” (Marius).Leader and instructor Lynda Swaineexplains, “It’s a great experience for children, because they gain lots of confidence withinthe group, and performing in front of anaudience. It creates a feeling of self worth, and really helps with their overallcoordination and fitness. I’ve seen many shychildren grow into confident, well roundedindividuals, and the change from thebeginning to the end is immense.”OPEN DAY – SUNDAY 27 SEPT10.30am – 1.30pm at Park Hall, LeytonRoad. We welcome all children andparents to watch us display, have fun, andmaybe learn some of our dances. If you areinterested in joining our group, this wouldbe a great opportunity.
