Harp Notitia: And how are we supposed to do this?Petruchio: Starve her and deprive her of her sleep. A hungry woman is never hard to deal with, and will do anything you say to get what she wants. At the beginning, they are a bit resistant, but overtime, you will see her start to do the things you say, and be more obedient.Harp Notitia: That is a little…harsh, don’t you think?Petruchio: Honestly, if the girl is as much of a shrew as my dear Katherine, nothing is too harsh. Women need to be put in their places. Just the other day, right after the marriage, I brought her home without the feast. After sitting her down for supper and bringing in the supper, I made a scene: “Tis burnt, and so is all the meat. What dogs are these! Where is the rascal cook? How durst you, villains, bring it from the dresser. And serve it thus to me that love it not? There, take it to you, trenchers, cups, and all!”I threw the meat on the floor and continued, “You heedless joltheads and unmannered slaves! What, do you grumble? I’ll be with you straight. (William Shakespeare. Act 4. Scene 1. Line 96-103).”And just like magic, the red faced, scolding shrew turned into a caring woman, who worried about me.Harp Notitia: So that’s all you need to do? Take away her food and she’ll do your bidding?Petruchio: That is correct. Uh, are there anymore of those cookies? And that’s where we lost him to a second plate of freshly baked cookies. The information we have found out is good, but we are forced to ask, is this just? Should a woman be allowed to be treated like this? Petruchio seems to think so, and since no one else has a problem with it, we will just quietly sit back and watch the outcome of his ‘taming’.

We have gotten some inside news that Petruchio is going to ask for Katherine’s hand in marriage. Yes, you heard me, the shrew Katherine! We have decided to interview both of them individually, then to come back after a few weeks of their marriage and interview them again.

November 15, 1650So first we interviewed Petruchio a few days before the wedding. QuestionWhy did you ask for Katherine’s hand in marriage? Was it because her father Baptista is very wealthy? AnswerWell, partially but also because she is a shrew, and I want to take up the challenge and tame her.QuestionHow exactly do you plan on doing that? She’s been a shrew for quite a while now. Everybody knows.Answer My methods shall not be shared. I have tamed many shrews. Katherine by far will be my biggest challenge.QuestionDo you love Katherine?AnswerNot yet, but I am fond of her. No more questions.Well there you have it. Lets see what Katherine had to say about Petruchio.QuestionDo you have any comments about Petruchio and the wedding?AnswerI will hang him on Sunday (the day of the wedding). I will not marry that man; he is nothing to me but a piece of garbage.QuestionWhy do you think he asked you to marry him?AnswerI think he asked me to marry him because of my father’s money. But I will make him change his mind for I do not want to be married.Question Are you afraid to be married to Petruchio because you think he will leave you? And your family will be disgraced?AnswerNo. I have to go now.

Pg 4It’s a Love, Hate Thing (cont.)

So as you can infer from this neither of them love each other. Not very un-common these days but I don’t think that Petruchio will ‘tame’ Katherine. I mean, look how rude she is! Some inside information we found was that she had told Petruchio these exact words:“I’ll see thee hanged on Sunday first.” When he tells her that they are going to get married on Sunday.Pablo writes to us saying:‘I really don’t think that Petruchio will tame that shrew. And if he does, he’s a miracle worker.’November 30, 1650Question: So we’re back here asking questions and we just have to know Petruchio; do you think you tamed Katherine? If so how do you feel about it?Answer: Oh most definitely I tamed my dear Kate. And I am very proud of it. I think that she is a woman that I have fallen in love with. Question: Has anything changed in the way you thought of her or the reason you married her, has that changed?Answer: Yes, I’ll admit that I used to think she was a challenge and that I would marry her just for the money. But now, after everything I realized that she truly is one of a kind.Question: No more questions, thank you. As you can see his answers have changed very much. He definitely loves her and has changed his reasons for everything. Perfect match might I say! Lets hear what Katherine had to say.Question: Good afternoon Katherine, what do you think of Petruchio? Might I be very bold and say that he has possibly ‘tamed’ you from being a shrew?Answer: Good afternoon to you too. I think Petruchio has brought me to see a very different side of life. And I think he hasn’t tamed me from anything but he has changed my actions. You should abide to your husband’s every will or else you are not being a good wife. Just a simple fact that he taught me.Either these are two totally different people or Petruchio really has tamed Katherine and Katherine really does love him! LUCENTIO REVEALED!

PG6

With Bianca’s grand wedding to Lucentio just around the corner, a big piece of inside information has recently struck us across the head with a three-legged stool. Lucentio isn’t really Lucentio!

That’s right folks; the real Lucentio is actually Cambio, the wonderful literature teacher found by ‘Lucentio’ himself. We’ll give you a moment to clean up that spilled mug of coffee before we continue, but be warned that the next piece of news might knock you right out of your chair! You must be wondering who the imposturous ‘Lucentio’ strutting around the place really is. According to Biondello, a trusted source, the imposter is a true friend and servant, Tranio.

What else would you expect? With the drama craze and ‘fashion’ going on these days, we wouldn’t be surprised if even Biondello wasn’t himself, but in fact a woman in disguise! Just kidding… Anyway, he had quite a lot to tell us.Biondello confessed to us that Lucentio hadn’t been completely honest with him either. In fact, that was the reason he was in front of us, ratting his own master out. Biondello told us about the lie his master spoke, directly to his face: “Sirrah, come hither: ’tis no time to jest. And therefore frame your manners to the time. Your fellow Tranio here, to save my life, puts my apparel and my countenance on, and I for my escape have put on his; for in a quarrel since I came ashore I killed a man and fear I was descried. Wait you on him, I charge you, as becomes, while I make way from hence to save my life. You understand me? (William Shakespeare. Act 1. Scene 1. Lines 182-191).”

“He lied to me about everything!” Biondello stated. “He said he was in trouble and needed me to play along and pretend that Tranio was the real Lucentio. When I found out that the whole thing was about a girl, I got angry.” When asked how he found out the motives behind Lucentio’s unthinkable behavior, Biondello turned red and said, “I heard Cambio and Bianca exchange sweet words, and watched as even the honorable Horensio gave up on her love.”

He quoted the real Lucentio, dressed as Cambio, lovingly telling Bianca, “While you, sweet dear, prove mistress of my heart! (William Shakespeare. Act 4. Scene 2. Line 12).”

As we dug deeper into the story, it came to our notice too, that poor Vincentio was brought in as part of the scheme as well! Vincentio is Lucentio’s old, innocent father, and since it was absolutely ridicous and impossible that the real Vincentio would accept the terms that came with marriage to Bianca, they replaced him with an imposter too. Fooling everyone around was only a part of the deal, but Biondello soon came to the realization that the fake Vincentio himself was being fooled, and lied to.

“When I listened in on Tranio and Lucentio having a conversation about the success on their mission, I realized that the fake Vincentio wasn’t even part of the scheme. He was played, just like me; thrown into a sticky situation that he wasn’t ready for.” Biondello confided in Harp Notitia. Biondello’s spying methods may not have been the best, but he was played like a fool and justice is necessary. The poor, young, gullible servant was tossed into a big, scheming, law breaking plot, and who knows what the ruffian Lucentio might have done later on. We have one thing to say to all our loyal readers out there. Lucentio can’t be trusted. He might twist your arm or persuade you to believe him, but in the end, he is a liar.

Harp Notitia Hello Bianca! Nice to meet you; we’ve heart do much about you.Bianca Good Afternoon Gentlemen! Indeed I’m not unknown around here, but you came her to interviews so ask me questions so I can get back to my studies.Harp Notitia Well we wanted to ask, who of the three suitors do you like the most?Bianca I prefer Lucentio over the others. He is so kind and he showed his love thorugh such a romantic way. He also has what my father wants him to have; money. I think we would make a good married couple.Harp Notitia Do you think Katherine is jealous of the attention you get from men?Bianca I doubt she is. All she ever cares about is herself she doesn’t want someone to boss her around all day although I have noticed her becoming increasingly more quiet about he feelings now that Petruchio is wooing her. Harp Notitia Your sister is described as a shrew. Have you noticed any changes in her behavior that tell otherwise? Bianca She has becoming so quiet! I think that because Petruchio is now on her case she is rather scared to speak out her mind. I think maybe she might not be a shrew after all. Harp Notitia People always describe you as the innocent and quiet one. What would you describe yourself as?BiancaIndeed I read and study more then my sister does but I too can sometimes be a shrew and rather annoying to people around me (laughs) just ask my father.Harp Notitia If you had the choice to marry any of your three suitors, who would you choose? BiancaHmmm.. probably Lucention. Unlike the others he isn’t old and he is very charming. I think that if he ever was to become my husband we would be the talk of the town. Harp NotitiaDo you think your sister hates you?Bianca Sometimes I think she does but sometimes I don’t. Its hard to explain but I think that every sibling relationship has some sort of hate in it because you grow up together but yes I think that since I’ve been old enough to court she has become increasingly annoyed with me. Harp Notitia If you were Katherine, would you marry Petruchio?Bianca If my dad wanted me to yes. I do what my father says because speaking my mind is not the best idea especially in front of head-strong men.Harp Notitia This is it for today thank you to our guest; Bianca Minola!

WHO ARE YOU!?

BIANCA LOVES A TUTOR As we have all heard from the rumors there are quite a few suitors that want Bianca. And some of them have decided to give her a tutor to perhaps win her over and her father. The deal is that her father will not let her get married unless her older sister Katherine does first. Hortensio tells us something that is a little bit… suspicious. Look at it for yourself.

“Yet if thy thoughts, Bianca, be so humble to cast thy wand'ring eyes on every stale, Seize thee that list!” –Hortensio Act 3 scene 1So he tells us if she keeps wandering her us to lowly tutors he will leave her to wed someone else. Hortensio also tells us that she is flirting with the tutor and the tutor back. If you’re all wondering, well who could this mysterious tutor be? And who would hire him!? Well none other than Lucentio! And the tutors name is Cambio. I would fire him if I were Lucentio. From what Hortensio has told us it seems that Bianca flirts about with anyone. Not a very respectable lady from this point of view. Lets take a recap on what Hortensio had told us earlier.Hortensio, please tell us what you plan to do with this; tutor and possible wife love relationship?‘Well If it starts to progress then I think I will just leave, I do not want a un faithful wife. And I think I may just go wed a widow’.Thank you Hortensio. So, what do you think that Bianca is going to do? Do you think she will fall in love with a lowly tutor? With the charming Lucentio? Or with Hortensio? Send your messenger and we may call you for one of our many Q&A sessions about it.

Page 9: Harp Notitia

Through the last few days the Harp Notitia has found out very valuable information about Bianca’s suitors. Suitors include Lucentio, Hortensio and Gremio all whom have their own traits that make them interesting to Bianca. In the end though only one can have her heart. Noticed by only the smartest though is that both Hortensio and Lucentio have secret identities. Both acting as suitors to Bianca in order to woo her into marriage and both suitors after study times in order to convince her father they are worthy of his daughters hand. Now why would they do such a thing? One could only guess but we presumed that in order to be certain they would get Bianca’s hand they had to work as efficiently as possible in the least amount of time in order to get an advantage over the other suitors. Our messengers ‘overheard’ an interesting conversation between Bianca and Lucentio while sending out posts; after Lucention had tried wooing Bianca with his love hidden behind the beautiful Latin language. After his speech she told him “Now let me see if I can conster it. Hic ibat Simois, I know you not, hic est Sigeia tellus, I trust you not, Hic steterat Priami, take heed he hear us not, regia, presume not, celsa senis, despair not (William Shakespeare Act 3, Scene 1).” This means for Lucentio who has just shown his deepest love to Bianca to not panic over not getting her as his wife but also not to presume that she would marry him. We took a survey in our work quarters and assumed that Bianca fancies Lucentio over the other Suitors. Hortensio on the other hand later tried declaring his love to her through music though not being as successful as Lucentio. Still Bianca gave both hope by kissing them! Now a normal thinking person in our time would think this is unacceptable but we thought Bianca just doesn’t want to disappoint one of the suitors. Gremio on the other hand has decided to act like himself; no mistaken identities and no lies in hope that Bianca is in search of a true heart which did not really work so he ended up with nothing. In the end though it seems like Lucentio is winning her heart with his foul play. Not only is he lying about his dowry to Bianca but also is he being untruthful about his identity and infact is two people; himself trying to impress Baptista and his servant Tranio trying to woo Bianca. All Baptista wants for his daughter is to be in good hands. He asks what the suitors can offer and because Lucentio’s offer is the best he promises she can be married to him if Lucentio proves that he will actually get permission from his father to promise the fortune to Bianca in case of the old mans death. Its true that Lucentio has a lot more to offer then the other two suitors do although this only depends on his dad. And another lie he makes as he hires a merchant to act as his father in order to wobble around asking his own father who would most likely disagree with the offer. Our whole team think that Lucentio in the end will win Bianca’s heart and marry her although we disagree that it is fair because he used evil tricks and lies in order to win her heart instead of trying it with real love like Gremio or fewer lies like Hortensio. We will find out soon we hope as Petruchios and Kathrine’s wedding is in a few days and Bianca is free to marry then.

Now that Katherine has been married off; Bianca is back on

the market! But who of her impressive assortment of

suitors will win her heart?

BIANCA IS ON THE MARKET!
