Your Road Map to Harnessing the Power of Youth:
We’re the first generation to feel
the impacts of climate change, and the last generation
that can do something about it- Governor Jay
Inslee
My Assumption:
You want to tap into bold, creative
ambitious youth who want to make
a global impact
1Be Ambitious
Start with why
Inspire then engage
Case Study: How to Inspire
Provide direct leadership access.
2
Make it Personal
Give up ownership

Make it Relevant
FACTS DON’T MATTER
Energy as an example..
Do we care about?
OR
• A barrel of oil• A solar panel• A wind turbine• A pipeline• An electricity
grid• Carbon
emissions
• Comfort• Safety• Stability• Interaction• Productivity• A better future
The way you frame a problem determines the solutions you can
achieve.
Communicate the way your audience
wants to
How can I make it easiest for people to get my message?
(Not the way you want to)

Active Learning
Case Study: BRIC Predictions Contest

Format:
• Student submit two minute videos • Panel of industry and youth vote on
winners• Top four received all expenses trip to
the 2013 International Student Energy Summit in Norway

• Over 40 submissions• All directly posted to
social media channels
• One video reached 40,000+ views alone
• Most submissions had over 20 comments and 10 shares
• Generated over 250,000 direct impressions and in-depth understanding on the role BRIC countries will play in energy
Case Study: ISES Innovation Jam
Objective: Move past the problems discussed at most events and brainstorm tangible actions.
Harness the collective intelligence in the room.

• “Un-conference” model• Open mic for anyone with an idea• Free flowing round tables for
brainstorming• Moderators to help drive the
conversation
“400 students from all around the world are sitting right beside me, I see courage, hope and spirit in the eyes of everyone here. I vow at this place to my own self that I will fight the war. The war to energize the future, a war that will make the youth in the Tribal Areas to pick up pens and give up guns, a war that will enlighten not only their houses but their minds.”
Tariq Khan ISES 2011 Innovation Jam Participant

Make it Tangible
Create outcomes
Case Study: Objective: Fund the most ambitious student project pitched at our upcoming North American Student Energy Summit
Format:
• Youth have 30 seconds to pitch their ideas• They then break out to work on these concepts
for 60 minutes with peers that rally around their concept
• The teams all re-convene and re-pitch their modified idea to a panel of judges
• The winning idea gets $1,000 on the spot to kickstart their project from sponsor, ConocoPhillips

Provide Feedback
Be honest and transparent
Case Study:
Objective: Fund a new youth energy business through a global pitch event. Provide all attendees with honest, tangible feedback on what a successful idea looks like.
Format:
• Finalists pitch in front of 500+ student audience
• After pitching, all finalists leave the room• Judges deliberate and select the winning
business while mic’d up, in front of the room. Finalists are then called back and the winner is selected on the spot
