This Harlan seminar is the 42 nd seminar and has focus on the use of energy carriers and environmental protection in ship design, sensor and weapon developement. Energy carrier is a mechanism or substance which has the property to accumulate energy that will be released at other place and at other period of time. The utilization may be to give energy to a machine, a vehicle, a boat, a ship, a submarine, sensor or weapon system.Energy carrier is for exampel a mechanical spring, electric battery, capasitator, pneumatics, hydrogengas, petroleum, or natur gas. Hydrogen is an exampel of energy carrier of energy from renewable energy sources. Hydrogen is used in fuel cell technology to produce electrical power, water and heat. Environmental protection is an important issue to reduce the global temperature rise. Among most climate scientists there are agreement that human activity is one of the main causes to the significant global temperature rise. In 2013 The US Office of Naval Research published an article where the main message was that ship integrated all-electric power systems is essential with respect to future power efficiency, given a transistion to energy based forms of weapon systems.

Here is the money quote:«As the technology advances, and faced with rising and

unpredictable fossil fuel costs, the Navy’s next-generationsurface combatant ship will leverage electric ship technologies in

it’s design. While electric ships already exits, designcharacteristics of a combatant ship are more complex with

regard to weight, speed, maneuverability - and now, directed energy weapons».

This year the seminar arrangement commitee wishes to illuminate this developement: the need of new energy carriers and alternative propulsion solutions, which experiences have been done concerning new energy carriers and alternative propulsion solutions in ship-, sensor- and weapon design. Finally the seminar will concentrate on what seems to be the future perspectives.
