Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive


PlayBox Technology is fully committed to comply with all applicable laws andregulations, including the RoHS Directive which restricts the use of certain hazardousmaterials in electrical and electronic products.

PlayBox Technology goal is to meet and exceed compliance obligations of the RoHSDirective on a global basis. RoHS substances will be virtually eliminated (to levels belowlegal limits) for all newly marketed PlayBox products subject to the RoHS Directive,except where it is widely recognized that there is no technically feasible alternative(unless otherwise exempted under the RoHS directives).

Directive 2002/95/ECcommonly known as the European Union (EU) Restriction onHazardous Substances (RoHS)-sets limits on the use of certain substances found inelectrical and electronic equipment. The intent of this legislation is to reduce the amountof hazardous chemicals that may leach out of landfill sites or otherwise contaminate theenvironment during end-of-life recycling. The Directive takes effect on July 1, 2006, andit refers to the following hazardous substances:

In accordance with this EU Directive, all PlayBox Technology products sold in theEuropean Union will be RoHS-compliant. Spare parts supplied for the repair and upgradeof equipment sold before July 1, 2006 are exempt from the legislation. PlayBoxTechnology equipment that complies with the EU directive will be marked with aRoHS-compliant symbol, as shown in .

The European Union (EU) Directive 2002/96/EC on Waste from Electrical and ElectronicEquipment (WEEE) deals with the collection, treatment, recovery, and recycling of electrical and electronic waste products.

Effective August 13, 2005, producers or users will be required to recycle electrical andelectronic equipment at end of its useful life, and must not dispose of the equipment inlandfills or by using other unapprovedmethods. (Some EU member state may have different deadlines.)

PlayBox Technology equipment that complies with the EU directive will be markedwith a WEEEcompliant symbol, as shown in .

WarningTo avoid electrical shock, check the

power cords properly

Use the exact type of power cords as required.Be sure to use power cord(s) that came withsafety certifications.The power cord(s) must be compliant with the ACvoltage requirements in your region.The power cord plug cap must have an electricalcurrent rating that is at least 125% of theelectrical current rating of this product.The power cord plug cap that plugs into the ACreceptacle on the power supply must be an IEC320, sheet C13, type female connectorBe sure to disconnect the power supply beforeaccessing the chassis or its componentsPlug the Power cord(s) into a socket that isproperly grounded before turning on the power.

Be aware of the locations of the power switches onthe chassis and in the room, so you can disconnectthe power supply if an accident occurs.Take extra precautionary measures when workingwith high voltage components. It is not

General Safety Guidelines

WarningUse rubber mats specifically designed aselectrical insulators when working withcomputer systems.The power supply or power cord mu stinclude a grounding plug and must be pluggedinto grounded outlets.CD/DVD-ROM Laser: CAUTION Do not open

the enclosures of power supplies or CD ROM toavoid injury.

Keep the area around the chassis clean and freeof clutter.To avoid injuries to the back, be sure to useyour leg muscles, keep your back straight, andbend your knees, when lifting the system.

Avoid wearing loose clot hing to preventing itfrom coming into contact with power circuits.

After removing the components or chassiscovers from the system, place them on a tablefor safeguardBe sure to remove any jewelry or metal objectsbefore working on the chassis to avoid shortcircuits should these objects come into contactwith power circuits.

After accessing the interior of the chassis, besure to close the chassis with chassis covers and

Use a grounded wrist strap des igned to preventstatic discharge.Keep all components and printed circuit boards(PCBs) in their anti-static bags until ready for use.

Touch a grounded metal object before removingthe board from the anti-static bag.Do not let components or PCBs come into contactwith your clothing, which may retain a chargeeven if you are wearing a wrist strap.Handle a board by its edges only; do not touch itscomponents, peripheral chips, memory modulesor contacts.When handling chips or modules, avoid touchingtheir pins.For grounding purposes, make sure yourcomputer chassis provides excellent conductivitybetween the power supply, the case, themounting fasteners and the motherboard.

Make sure that the rack is securely anchored ontoa unmovable surface or structure before installingthe chassis into the rack.

Unplug the power cord(s) of the rack beforeinstalling the chassis into the rack.

Make sure that the system is adequatelysupported. Make sure that all the components aresecurely fastened to the chassis to preventcomponents from falling off from the chassis.

Be sure to install an AC Power Disconnect for theentire rack assembly and this Power Disconnect mustbe clearly marked.

The rack assembly shall be properly grounded toavoid electric shock. The rack assembly must providesufficient airflow to the chassis for proper cooling.

For proper cooling, make sure toinstall all chassis covers beforeturning on the system. If this rule isnot strictly followed, warranty may

become void. Do not open thecasing of a power supply. Power

supplies can only be accessed andserviced by a qualified technician of the manufacturer.

Unpacking the system

Inspect the box the chassis was shipped in and note if it was damaged in any way. If thechassis itself shows damage you should file a damage claim with the carrier whodelivered it.

Decide on a suitable location for the rack unit that will hold the chassis. It should besituated in a clean, dust-free area that is well ventilated. Avoid areas where heat,electrical noise and electromagnetic fields are generated. You will also need it placednear a grounded power outlet. Be sure to read the Rack and Server speci

Control Panel Buttons

Control Panel

There are two push-buttons located on the front of the chassis. These are (in order fromleft to right) a reset button and a power on/off button.

Power: The main power switch is used to apply or remove power from thepower supply to the server system. Turning off system power with this buttonremoves the main power but keeps standby power supplied to the system.Therefore, you must unplug system.

Power Failure: When this LED flashes, it indicates a power failure in the powersupply before servicing.

Control Panel Leds

Reset: The reset button is used to reboot the system.before servicing.

The control panel located on the front of the HD System has 6 LEDs. These LEDsprovide you with critical information related to different parts of the system. This sectionexplains what each LED indicates when illuminated and any corrective

Overheat/Fan Fail: When this LED flashes it indicates a fan failure. Whencontinuously on (not flashing) it indicates an overheat condition, which may becaused by cables obstructing the airflow in the system or the ambient roomtemperature being too warm.

Check the routing of the cables and make sure all fans are present andoperating normally. You should also check to make sure that the chassis coversare installed. Finally, verify that the heatsinks are installed properly. This LED

Control Panel

HDD: Indicates SAS/SATA drive, and/or DVD-ROM drive activity when flashing.

Green: When illuminated, this LED (on the front of the drive carrier)indicates drive activity. A connection to the SAS backplane enables this LED toblink on and off when that particular drive is being accessed.

Each SAS/SATA drive carrier has two LEDs.

Broadcast I/O

The SD/HD system series operate with SD/HD Definition audio and video.

The digital video interface is serial digital with embeded and AES/EBU audio.

A reference input is included in SD mode that uses analog blackburst and TriSync in HDmode. We recomended that you incorporate patch points in the input and output pathso that the baypassed and removed from the path for maintenance.

Ensure that the leveling jacks on the bottom of the rack are fully extended to thefloor with the full weight of the rack resting on them.In single rack installation,stabilizers should be attached to the rack.

In multiple rack installations, the racks should be coupled together. Always make sure the rack is stable before extending a component from the rack.

You should extend only one component at a time - extending two or moresimultaneously may cause the rack to become unstable.

Review the electrical and general safety precautions that came with the componentsyou are adding to your chassis.

Determine the placement of each component in the rack before you install the rails.Install the heaviest server components on the bottom of the rack first, and then work

up.Use a regulating uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to protect the server from power

surges, voltage spikes and to keep your system operating in case of a power failure. Allow the hot plug hard drives and power supply modules to cool before touching

them.6. Always keep the rack's front door and all panels and components on the serversclosed when not servicing to maintain proper cooling.

Rack Mounting Considerations

Ambient Operating Temperature

If installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly, the ambient operating temperature of the rack environment may be greater than the ambient temperature of the room.Therefore, consideration should be given to installing the equipment in an environmentcompatible with the manufacturers maximum rated ambient temperature.

Reduced Airflow

Equipment should be mounted into a rack so that the amount of airflow required forsafe operation is not compromised.

Mechanical Loading

Equipment should be mounted into a rack so that a hazardous condition does not arisedue to uneven mechanical loading.

Circuit Overloading

Consideration should be given to the connection of the equipment to the power supplycircuitry and the effect that any possible overloading of circuits might have onovercurrent protection and power supply wiring. Appropriate consideration of equipmentnameplate ratings should be used when addressing this concern.

Reliable Ground

A reliable ground must be maintained at all times. To ensure this, the rack itself shouldbe grounded. Particular attention should be given to power supply connections otherthan the direct connections to the branch circuit (i.e. the use of power strips, etc.).

Installing the Iner Rack Rails

This section provides information on installing the chassis into arack unit with the quick-release rails provided. There are a variety of rack units on themarket, which may mean the assembly procedure will differ slightly. You should alsorefer to the installation instructions that came with the rack unit you are using.

PlayBox Sd/HD server

NOTE: This rail will fit a rack between 26" and 33.5" deep.

The chassis package includes two rail assemblies in the rack mounting kit. Eachassembly consists of two sections: an inner fixed chassis rail that secures directly to theserver chassis and an outer fixed rack rail that secures directly to the rack itself.

Figure 4-2 : Installing the Inner Rack Rails1. Place the inner rail extensions on the side of the chassis aligning the hooks of thechassis with the rail extension holes. Make sure the extension faces "outward" just likethe pre-attached inner rail.

The PlayBox SD/HD chassis includes a set of inner rails in two sections: Inner rails andinner rail extensions. The inner rails are pre-attached to the chassis, and do notinterfere with normal use of the chassis if you decide not to use a server rack. The innerrail extension is attached to the inner rail to mount the chassis in the rack.

Outer rails attach to the server rack and hold the server in place. The outer rails for thesystem extend between 30 inches and 33 inches.server

Square hole to round hole adapter set

Rail kit upplied with PlayBox server system are by default designed for squareholeracks, but we have optional adapter for customers who use round-hole rack andthreadedhole rack.

For the threaded-hole rack, as long as the thread is M5 or larger, our screws withwasher can pass through the flange to mount this adapter on the rack to connect to ourrail.

The drives are mounted in drive trays to simplify their installation and removal from thechassis.

Press the release button on the drive tray. This extends the drive bay handle.Use the handle to pull the drive out of the chassis.

Unplug the power supply module from thesystem.

For proper operation your systemrequires two working modules. For redundant operation your system

requires three working modules. If one module fails, replace the failedmodule immediately.

The power supply for the PlayBox SD/HD Server chassis is redundant and hot-swappable, meaning that the power supply can be changed without powering down thesystem.

Note

To replace the failed power supply module:

The PlayBox SD/HD Server chassis includes a redundant power supply (at least twopower 1. modules). The server may continue running if only one power supply moduleis removed at a time.

System Backup and Restore

You should back up your files on a regular basis. As you work with your system, youcreate work files that are typically saved to your hard drive.

You should make back up in case your hard drive stops functioning properly.Use thenetwork connection to make back up copies.

Restore Your System

The restore process returns your system to the original factory settings. When youordered your system, you provided details about your application on the systemconfiguration sheet.

Your system is set up according to this configuration sheet.

Before you start the restore process, back up all of your files. The restore processcompletely overwrites the hard drive that contains your system files. Any additionalmedia drives in your system are not overwritten.

T e restore process does not restore any unsupported third-party software or personalpreferences in the Windows operating environment. Changes made, settings, or patchesinstalled after delivery, are not restored.

The System Recovery DVD

The restore procedure requires the System Recovery DVD that was delivered with yoursystem.

PlayBox maintans a duplicate copy of your system restore DVD. If diagnostics arerequired, your system an be recreated at the factory using the duplicate SystemRecovery DVD.

Restore Procedure

The Recovery DVD package consists of these user instructions and bootableDVD. The DVD contains a copy of the software that was preinstalled on yourPlayBox system.

Important: During the recovery process, all data saved on the primary partitionof the hard disk (typically C: drive) will be deleted, including any personal dataand configuration settings. We recommend you to back up on removable mediapersonal files that are currently on the primary partition before using theRecovery DVD.

Prevent Damage and Malfunction

Read and observe all instructions in this section to keep your system working safely andeffectively.

Do NOT Modify Hardware

Your system is delivered with all the necessary hardware and software already installed.

You should not have to open the system case. However, if the system case is damaged,please call PlayBox Technical Support and follow their direct instructions.

Installing aAdditional hardware or modifying the hardware in any way can compromisethe uninterrupted operation of your system and void waranty.

Do NOT Add Software

Your system is a closed system. Do not install any additional third party software.

Additional software can create undesired effects and possibly introduce viruses to thesystem. If you install additional third party software your system may no longer runsatisfactorily.

Verify Monitor Refresh Rate

The factory sets the system graphical resolution to 1280 X 1024 pixels with a verticalrefresh rate of Hz.

If your computer monitor is an older model that does not support a refresh rate of Hz,your display could be unusable and you could damage your hardware.

You need to change the system refresh rate toa value that your monitor does support.
