Designing a Solution

• Key Considerations– Cellular Based

• Cost of network usage– Data MVNOs

• Cost of Hardware• Maintenance of the network

– Robustness Required• Hardware Watchdog Timers• Network Monitors• Intrinsically Safe

– Application• Dynamic IP or a gateway required

M2M3G

3G Utilization• High speed applications

• Fixed points requiring video downloads (roadside signs, ATM’s, etc)• Fixed wireless backbones (service other site data needs with M2M system)• Aggregate multiple points onto one wireless link

• Surveillance, Healthcare(Eg. Streaming Camera, Graphic Uploads)802.11, WiMax, Mesh Networks

• Fixed Wireless Data Terminals(Eg. Home/Office Connections)3G - EV-DO, HSDPA, HSUPA

• Real-Time - Industrial Monitoring(Eg. Processing Sensing)802.11, WiMax, Mesh Networks

• Surveillance, Public Info Displays (Eg Still-Motion Camera, Graphic Uploads) 2/3G - 1X, EV-DO, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA

• Batch - Industrial Monitoring (Eg. Equipment Temperature)801.11, Mesh Networks

• Batch - Vending, Fleet & Freight Mgt.(Status Alerts, Location Alerts)2G -1X, GPRS, AMPS, Mobitex, DataTAC etc.

Short Range, <100m Long Range, >1 km

M2M3G

Modem Integration

• Host integration efforts are fairly easily upgraded to 3G from GPRS or CDMA 1x• Need to move from serial to USB to handle airlink speeds• Most software commands are preserved plus extensions• Antennae need to cover new bands (UMTS only)

Certification

• New modules will be certified – will need to recertify the host platforms at carrier labs

Choosing a partner

• 3G experience and certifications• Committed to future iterations of airlink speeds• Experience with embedded module integration and services• Wait for the airlink to settle
