Inside this issue:
Happy St.
Patrick’s Day!
Top of the
month to you
my fellow
members! Welcome to the month
of March, the exciting time of the
year, everything will start turning
green. Plants are in bloom early
and the weather is getting warmer,
meaning field trips galore. New
members interested in our great
club and excited to get started. Let
us continue to show our gratitude
and help them become rock
hounds.
Woody Woodside did a great job
last month in planning and
organizing the “Member Sale”. I
believe we had a great turnout with
a lot of variety in material and
lapidary work. Thanks Woody and
all his helpers! Woody has a
program planned for the March
meeting that features a flint
knapper.
All the committees are busy making
plans for 2010! Jim McClure, our
November Show Chairman, will be
announcing a show planning
meeting coming up this month (see
page two). There is a field trip
schedule out and will be posted in
this newsletter by Dean Norman
(see page six). Evah
Summers has a fun program
planned for the Juniors at our
March Meeting. Come and enjoy
the fun and entertainment and get
educated.
I would like to schedule a workshop
that does not interfere with field
trip schedules and shows
throughout the year. Any ideas for
dates would be greatly appreciated!
Kathy Reimers has mentioned that
she would like to pass on the
newsletter editor position to anyone
willing to have an experience they
will enjoy. Training will be
provided!
Note: If you know of a member
who is ill or has suffered the illness
or loss of a family member, please
do not hesitate to contact our
Cheer Committee Chairperson,
Kathy McClure.
Remember, there are never enough
team players and mentors in this
organization to do all the work that
is needed to maintain it. The club
will continue to thrive as long as
our members are willing to
volunteer for a variety of jobs that
come available. We also like to
have a certain amount of job
rotation to take full advantage of
our members’ varied talents. I’m
looking for few more volunteers to
assist in the following areas:
Librarian, Welcome Table, Mineral
Council Representative, and
members

March Meeting News:
The March General Meeting will be held on
Friday, March 12th at 7:00 PM in the
basement day care center (entrance in the back) of
Chico Alliance Church 3670 Chico Way NW
Bremerton, Washington.
Board Meeting: The March Board Meeting will be
on Thursday, March 18th at 7:00 PM. This
meeting is also at the church, in the Junior’s
Activity Room. All members are encouraged to
attend Board Meetings. Please feel free to
participate.
Program: The program will be a DVD on the
flake over grind (FOG) method of flint knapping,
and Steve "Mutt" Colby will be demonstrating so
our members can see firsthand the process. FOG
is the method that produces the beautiful parallel
flake grooves that most people to day believe to
be a recent technique since it involves grinding
the flint, or obsidian before the flaking is carried
out. However, the ancient Egyptians used this
method, as did the Danes before they had metal.
— Woody Woodside
Display Table: We will have a display table for
March. This would be a good time to bring in those
lapidary projects you've been working on over the
winter. The display table is a great way to show
others in the club what your specialty is and could
motivate others to try something new. It is also a
good way for the more adventuresome to show
what they have been lucky enough to find while out
in the field. There are still a lot of gems and
minerals in the ground just waiting for somebody to
pick them up. Why not be one of those "finders
keepers"? Find something special, and then share
your experience with others at our club display
table. As always, you can bring in any gem,
mineral, fossil or lapidary-related item of your
choice. Juniors are encouraged to participate in this
portion of the meeting. If you can't think of
anything, bring something green. - Garry Mahan
Junior’s: We are going to get a special treat at the
next KMGS meeting. Several of our members have
offered to do a presentation on metal detector
types, and how to use them. Bring your questions
for our experts. Be prepared to answer some
questions and collect some prizes!

The February Program Review: The “Annual
Member’s Sale” provides an opportunity for our
members to sell their excess to other members and
their guests. Typically everyone has a great time and
it sounds like it was a terrific success again this year!
to experience the HUGE HUGE HUGE mineral and gem
show that is held officially at the Tucson Convention
Center and unofficially over a large part of the town.
There were people from many places around the world
with samples of minerals and gems found in their
countries. And what samples they were! For
example, I saw pods of amethyst that were 4 feet
taller than I am and twice as wide (that's big!), with
crystals so deep purple that they were almost black.
We share an amazing hobby/sport/mania. If I ever
doubted that, I don't now. Keep rockin' Juniors.
— Evah Summers
Refreshments for the March General Meeting:
will be provided by members with last name
beginning with the letter “W” , “L” (Please provide
finger foods that can be placed on a napkin.)
Remember that this involves refreshment set-up
and clean-up after the meeting has been
concluded.
Notice To Members:
We will be meeting at Ruth and Marvin Brooks-
Butler's home for a planning meeting of our next
show on March 24th, 6:30 PM—8:30 PM.
This is to get things rolling for November. As you all
know, it takes lots of hands and heads (that is the
kind using for ideas) to make the show as
wonderful as the last one. I would like to hear your
ideas for next show. I will even consider some com-
plaints! HA HA! I am hoping to introduce some new
members to the wonderful camaraderie of
Kitsap Mineral and Gem Society. This meeting is
open for everyone; SO DON'T BE SHY. Please plan
to attend. Thanks to Ruth and Marvin for opening
their home to us. - Jim McClure
“Hard Rock Beaders: The “Hard Rock Beaders” will
continue to meet on the first Thursday of the month. They
will meet on Thursday, March 4th, at 6:30 PM. The
meetings are held at the community center at the Steele
Creek Mobile Home Park. Call Linda Mathison at (360)
698-1562 for directions. Everyone is welcome!

From the Lips of Grandchildren….
When my grandson Billy and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside to keep from at-tracting pesky insects.
Still, a few fireflies followed us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, "It's no use, Grandpa. The mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights."

Recycling Trim Saw Oil
With the cost of oil products these days, here’s a clever
way to clean and recycle dirty oil from your trim or slab
saw: Put the oil in a disposable container such as a
coffee can or short plastic bucket, add hot water, and
stir. The hot water warms the oil and lowers its
viscosity so the trash (dirt) can settle out more easily.
The water, being denser than oil, sinks to the bottom.
The dirt and swarf that are suspended in the oil settle
out and sink to the bottom of the water, leaving clean
oil on top.
How then to separate the two? Put the whole works in
the freezer. The water will freeze and you can just pour
off the clean oil, and you can dispose of the ice (and
the dirt).

Bagdad Mine Tour
February 13, 2010
By Kathy Reimers
Dave and I had an early Valentine’s treat on
February 13th. We feel fortunate to have been
included in a Mohave County Gemstoners’
(www. gemstoners.org) field trip to the Bagdad Mine in
Bagdad, AZ. The tour was limited to twenty-five
members.
This is a major open-pit copper and molybdenum
mine and is located about two hours northwest of
Phoenix.
We were able to take a guided tour of safer portions
of the mine and were allowed to do a little
rock hounding in their parking lot (granite that has
been processed surrounds you.) The pit’s rim is at
4000 feet above sea level and the pit is currently
2000 feet deep. The above picture was taken at the
lowest we were able to go into the pit and you could
look up at the rim which was maybe 350-500 feet
above you. They have done core drillings to sea
level and they are still finding ore. To reach the ore
at sea level the pit has to be widened out about
double what it is now. This mine runs 24/7/365.
There are HUGE dump trucks and other HUGE pieces
of equipment running down near the bottom of this
pit. You can only vaguely hear the noise from those
processes, it is unbelievable!
We were able to see the end products, large semi-
truck mud flap-size pieces of copper all stacked up
and waiting to be shipped-out on a loading dock.
There were also huge (ton-size) sacks of medicinal-
grade molybdenum waiting to be shipped out as
well.
The mine has a small break-room area with some
unusual pieces of chrysocolla and other beautiful
minerals in display cases for us to see. They even
had a fossil cactus on display.
The “Bagdad Café” opened up for our group on a
day they were normally closed and we had a
wonderful late lunch.
It was a wonderful day and a wonderful field trip!
This mine was divine!
Yep –that green thing at the bottom is a lake—there are actually two of them at the bottom.
This massive lake is the settling pond from the mine—this is approximately 1500 feet deep and there are
buildings buried in this. You can see the dam side of this from Burro Creek.
This is a picture of the dam side, looking back at the settling pond, taken from Burro Creek.

KITSAP MINERAL AND GEM SOCIETY
GENERAL MEETING MINUTES
February 12, 2010
LET THE GAMES BEGIN!
Opening night of the 2010 Olympics did not deter
club members from buying and selling world class
minerals, gems and related items at the KMGS
Annual Members’ Sale. Thank you to everyone
who participated! It was a very fun evening!
Jim McClure is getting an early start on the
volunteer list for the Fall Festival of Gems. There
are a number of positions that need to be filled so
the earlier you sign up the better
chance you have of getting the
job you want to do. This show is
successful because of our
volunteers so please, contact Jim
and let him know how you wish
to help!
Doug Leider has secured Raab
Park in Poulsbo for the Annual
KMGS Picnic. It will be on 31 July from noon to
4:00 PM scan through your recipes and bring your
best potluck item for the hungry crowd.
Being no further business the sale continued and
everyone who came to support our event went
away gold medal winners! Way to go, KMGS!

Good Friends and Good Rock Trips…
While visiting good friends in Bisbee Arizona, I
checked the web for rock clubs in Southern AZ and
found one that meets in Sierra Vista that had a
meeting in three days and was only twenty-seven
miles away. It was a small group of friendly rock
hounds. There was also a very friendly couple from
Coeur D’Alene, Idaho, who were snowbirds like us,
visiting the club. The club field trip was two weeks
away, but Michael and Diane from Idaho told us of a
place.
So with a business card and a scribbled map on the
back, Wilma and I headed for the mountains.
Following the map to the end of the road, we
parked, booted up and looked around. Wilma and
dog,
Alphie,
checked
the area
around
the car
and trail
head,
and I
went up
the trail.
I had to
go
through
a heavily
brushed area until I found the limestone outcropping
and followed it up the mountain. I found a couple of
places where our neighbors from the south had
stayed while heading north. I made plenty of noise
as I went. I was still looking for signs of rock hounds
but found none. The brush was so heavy that I had
to drop down the hill and cut over and then back up
to the outcrop.
There it was: a large deposit, untouched by rock
hounds, of “root beer onyx”. The pieces were too
large for me to carry, so I filled my pack with
manageable sizes and left all the rest.
I phoned Michael and Diane to thank them. They
were excited and were going to try and find the pile
I left. Nothing better than good friends and good
rock trips. — Jack Eads

Breccia—is a clastic sedimentary rock that is
composed of large (over
two millimeter diameter)
angular fragments. The
spaces between the
large fragments can be
filled with a matrix of
smaller particles or a
mineral cement which
binds the rock together.
The specimen shown at
right is about two inches
(five centimeters)
across.

2010 Tucson Show Report by Wilma Eads
“Unusual" describes our
stay in Tucson this year: it
has rained many days. The
storms from the west
have howled,
pounded and
flooded. Where
was the rainbow?
At about 9:30 AM, on February 11th, the
first day of the Tucson Gem & Mineral
Society's 56th annual show "Gems and
Gem Minerals," we waited. There were at
least two hundred people before us in the
line, and thousands behind, when we
entered the massive room to find treasures from
around the world. We hurried
to the center of the hall to see
the biggest, most rare, most
glittering wonders. It is the
size that impresses us first.
The minerals are ten to twelve
inches high and up to three
inches in
diameter. They
have come from
Africa, Australia, South America and
China. And how they glitter. In
museum quality cases their colors
gleam and glisten. These treasures
are priceless! We stand and gaze in
awe! The rainbow has come inside.
"Unfathomable beauty" describes the show.

March Birthstone : Aquamarine
If you can picture the cerulean blue
waters of the Mediterranean, you will
understand why the birthstone for March is
named Aquamarine. Derived from the
Roman word "Aqua," meaning water, and
"mare," meaning sea, this pale blue gem
does indeed resemble the color of seawater. The
ancient Romans believed that the Aquamarine was
sacred to Neptune, the god of the sea, having fallen
from the jewel boxes of sirens and washed onto shore.
Early sailors wore aquamarine talismans, engraved
with the likeness of Neptune, as protection against
dangers at sea. via—aboutbirthstones.com
Greetings From the Field,
Our recent field trip to Green Mountain, Kalama was
great fun. We had eight adults and one junior. The
weather was perfect with sunshine and 50+
degrees. We
started our
adventure by
attempting to
find the red
moss bed. I
missed the
correct trail by
a hundred
yards too far
to the left.
This caused us to wander in the woods for about
forty-five minutes. Boy, was I embarrassed. We got
back to the vehicles and decided to hunt for agate
at a site very close to where we already were. We
hiked over
to this site
and
started
digging. It
did not
take long
to start
finding
agate and
crystal.
After a few
hours
we
broke
for
lunch
and
then
Terry
Iverson
lead us
over to the red moss bed. His memory seems to be
better than mine.
At the moss bed, Woody started digging and found
several very nice pieces. I found a few small pieces
of red
moss
agate,
some
jasper and
several
carnelian
agates.
Everybody
had a
great day
as we ended at 4:30 PM.
Consider joining us for the next field trip. It is
always an adventure. — John Hubbard
