“Our clients adore this island,” she says in a relaxed moment after theracing has concluded. “The shopping is excellent and there is no comparison to the other Caribbean islands.” In fact, Perini has discovered the local side of Saint Barth and loves the traditional neighborhoods of Vitet and Corossol. “They have kept their native flavor, something you wouldn’t expect on a tourist island. I like to takemy little car and explore new places, see how real life works on theisland. I even know the man in Grand Fond who sells the gas bottles.”Her route also includes the fish market in Gustavia, where she shopsfor one of the many parties at the villa.

“When I come to the island I entertain our friends and clients,” Perini explains. “All of the owners, crew, everyone is invited.We have special relationships with the owners and skippers, and many of them become friends. They feel like they belong to abig family. These relationships are very important to us, and we really put our heart into what we do. Building a boat is something that brings you happiness and we are always excited about the process.”

“Nos clients adorent l’île” dit-elle la course achevée, dans un moment de détente. “Le shopping est excellent et l’île est uniquecomparée aux autres îles caribéennes.” En fait, Milena Perini qui a découvert la vie locale de Saint-Barth, aime le voisinage traditionnel de Vitet et de Corossol. “Ils ont gardé leur caractère, ce quelque chose que vous ne vous attendez pas à trouver surdes îles touristiques. J’aime prendre ma petite voiture pour découvrir de nouveaux endroits et voir comment se déroule la “vraievie” sur l’île. Je connais même la personne qui vend les bouteilles de gaz à Grand Fond.” Ses promenades sont jalonnées par lesmarchés aux poissons de Gustavia dont les étals approvisionnent certaines des innombrables fêtes données dans sa villa.

“Lorsque je viens sur l’île, j’aime distraire nos amis et nos clients” explique Milena Perini. “Tous les propriétaires et membres del’équipage sont invités. Nous avons des rapports privilégiés avec les propriétaires et les skippers et beaucoup d’entre eux sont devenus des amis. Ils sentent qu’ils font partie d’une grande famille. Ce rapport est très important pour nous et nous mettonstoujours du coeur dans ce que nous faisons. Construire un bateau est une chose qui vous apporte du bonheur et nous sommestoujours aussi enthousiastes à chaque étape de la construction”.



Perini Navi has grown exponentially since Milena joinedthe staff in 1986. “There were just eight people working

there at the time,” she recalls. Today the company is international with over 233 people working in Italy, Turkey,and the US. “Most people have worked in the yard for over

20 years, so that is a big family as well.”

As for the St Barth Bucket, it is an important moment forPerini Navi. “More and more of our owners are telling usthat the Bucket is their favorite regatta. Potential clients

come as well. Some charter a boat first to see if they want tobuild their own Perini Navi boat later,” says Perini, who

notes that the major naval architects, such as Ed Dubois,Ron Holland, and Philippe Briand, all work with the

shipyard. “Christian Liaigre who has connections to SaintBarth has done some of our interiors,” adds Perini, whose

company has also worked with UK architect Norman Foster as part of their creative mix.

With Perini Navi sailboats ranging from the sleek racingform of P2 to the majestic grandeur of Maltese Falcon, the

Bucket is a perfect place to showcase their prowess. “The atmosphere of the Bucket puts everyone in a positive

mood,” says Perini. “Whoever comes always wants to comeback over and over again.” n

After graduation, Beckett worked on boats in Greece for sixmonths, landing his first yacht broker’s job in Athens, selling on

commission only. “Probably worse than not having a job at all,” hejokes. Knowing he wanted to work in the boat business, Beckettbought a copy of a yachting magazine and sent letters to at least100 names in the back of the book. “I got six replies,” he admits.

“Three said nothing going, three said come see me, and one ofthose was Nigel Burgess. We stayed in touch, and in March 1981,I joined the firm. His secretary, Catherine Chapelier, had already

been there five years and is still there today as manager of the Monaco office. The company is like a family, we all know each

other and it is a very unique environment where we operate verymuch as a team, very cohesive.”

Diplôme en poche, Jonathan Beckett travaille en Grèce durant sixmois, et décroche son premier job de yacht broker à Athènes, payéuniquement à la commission. “Peut-être pire que de ne pas avoirde boulot du tout” plaisante t-il. Comme il sentait que sa voie étaitdans le commerce des navires, Jonathan Beckett achète un magazine de yachting et envoie sa candidature auprès des 100 entreprises mentionnées dans les dernières pages. “J’ai eu six réponses. Trois d’entre elles ne m’offraient rien et les trois autressuggéraient de venir les voir. L’une d’elles provenait de Nigel Burgess. Nous sommes restés en contact et en mars 1981, j’ai intégré son équipe. Son assistante, Catherine Chapelier déjà enposte depuis cinq ans est toujours directrice du bureau de Monaco.Cette entreprise est comme une famille. Nous nous connaissonstous. C’est un environnement unique dans lequel nous collaboronsdans un esprit d’équipe très soudé”.

Beckett admits that these are challenging times, yet very, very interesting considering the recent financial crisis. “We have had

a record three years, which is extraordinary really,” he notes.“This is the first time I’ve operated a company with 10 offices

and 150 people, so it’s all new territory for me. My nature is tobe pretty cautious and careful.” One of the keys to the success at

Burgess is the company philosophy: “Everyone is employed,they work 47 weeks a year, they have to show up to work every

day, and we encourage them to fly off to meet a client in Los Angeles or Abu Dhabi whenever necessary,” explainsBeckett, whose son, Edmund Beckett, has just joined the

company as a naval architect. “We do not operate with any independent contractors. We have a different business model.

I am a hard worker, I try to set a good example… and othersfollow…and that is very much at the root of our success

I think.”

Jonathan Beckett admet que notre époque est touchée par la récente crise mais la trouve néanmoins intéressante. “Nous avonseu trois années records, ce qui est vraiment extraordinaire” note t-il. “C’est la première fois que je dirige 150 collaborateurs,une nouvelle aventure pour moi. Et mon caractère est d’être plutôt prudent et méticuleux.” L’une des clés du succès chez Burgess fait partie des valeurs de l’entreprise : “ Tout le mondetravaille 47 semaines par an. Les collaborateurs doivent faire deleur mieux chaque jour et nous les encourageons à aller à la rencontre d’un client à Los Angeles ou à Abu Dhabi lorsque celas’avère nécessaire” explique Jonathan Beckett dont le fils, Edmund Beckett vient d’intégrer l’entreprise en tant qu’architectenaval. “Nous ne faisons pas appel à des sous-traitants indépendants. Nous avons un ‘business model’ différent. Je suis untravailleur infatigable. J’essaie de montrer l’exemple... et les autressuivent. Et je pense que c’est cela qui forme le socle de notre succès.



Sailing into the future“In terms of sales, it is hard to predict what might happen,” says Beckett, who notes that last year Burgesssold 22 yachts at an average of 21 million euros. “One yacht sold for over 200 million euros, which distortsthe picture,” he admits. For now, the company focuses on five aspects of the yachting business: sales;new construction, charter; operational management; and technical services/new construction.

Pour le moment,l’entreprise se concentre sur les cinq créneaux du commerce des yachts : ventes, nouvelles constructions,charter, management opérationnel et management technique.

“It took two and a half years to sell Maltese Falcon,” Beckett notes.“It’s hard on the sellers in this market, but we had about six people interested. The ultimate buyer was interested for 18 months, did seatrials, put the purchase on hold, and finally went into a green-light situation. We believe in this kind of determination and persistence,and the desire to service your clients every day of the week. You neverknow what might happen, so we are at it 24 hours a day, seven days aweek, ready to act in a moment as the situation dictates. You have tostrike quickly, as changes at short notice are frequent.”

Burgess maintains a company-wide shared database to help its brokersgain insight. “Anyone who hears the slightest snippet of information itgoes into the database and we can all work on it,” explains Beckett, whoadds that employees often specialize in market niches, from sailboatsto motor yachts of various sizes.

Nous ne savons jamais cequi peut arriver, alors nous sommes là 24 heures sur 24, 7 jours sur 7,prêts à réagir à chaque instant à tout évènement. Nous devons réagirau bon moment, quelque soit le lieu ou l’heure.

Burgess dispose d’une large base de données qui aide ses commerciauxà gagner en sagacité “Celui qui détient la moindre information la rentredans la base pour que tout le monde puisse travailler dessus” expliqueJonathan Beckett qui ajoute que ses collaborateurs sont spécialisés dansles marchés de niches qui vont des bateaux à voiles aux motor-yachtsde toutes tailles.

Concernant le marché des charters, Jonathan Beckett indique que la Méditerranée représente toujours 70 % du marché, suivie par les Caraïbes, dont Saint Barth est le port majeur, le numéro un des

spots de la région. Pour Jonathan Beckett, l’avantage de Saint-Barthest “son chic total, ainsi que sa proximité avec Saint Martin pour le

carburant et pour aller et venir sur ce terrain de jeu exclusif deyachts de luxe ”.

“Les navires d’aujourd’hui sont d’envergure extraordinaire, avec encore plus de yachts de plus de 100 mètres que jamais auparavant”

ajoute Jonathan Beckett qui trouve que les yachts de 60 mètres n’ontplus autant de succès. “Nous avons en construction trois grands

yachts de plus de 100 mètres, ce qui représente des yachts à plusd’un milliard de dollars pour des clients extrêmement exigeants et

qui ont besoin de notre plus grande attention.”

As for the charter market, Beckett indicates that the Mediterranean still represents 70% of the worldwide picture, followed by the Caribbean,where Saint Barth is a prime port, the number one spot in the region. For Beckett the advantage to Saint Barth is “its total chicness, as well as itsproximity to St Martin for fuel, and for flying in and out of this exclusive playground for yachts,” he says.

“Boats today are extraordinary, with more yachts over 100 meters under construction than ever before,” adds Beckett, who finds that demand fornew builds in the 60 meter sector are not as popular today as pre-credit crunch. “We have three major yachts over 100 meters under construction,that’s over a billion dollars in yachts for very demanding clients that need a lot of attention.”

Beckett imagines that the next two or three years willsee the same financial difficulties as the past few. At the

same time, he sees new countries such as Brazil andIndia coming to the yacht market, and predicts thatChina will eventually come into the market as well,

with at least 50,000 people who can afford to purchaseor charter a yacht.

“The future is rosy,” Beckett muses. “Our market issmall, with a lot of room for growth. America has a

great potential as well. We have a lot to do. The harderyou work, the more successful you are. One of the

exciting things for us as a company is that we are just beginning—just at the starting line of what we want to

do and where we want to go. We have established agood business with a good reputation, and now is the

time to get off the starting blocks and rev up our engines to achieve our full potential.” n

That was back in 1996, and by 2003 Hollandhad expanded his horizons to the super sloop,Mirabella V at 247’, which remains the largest single-mast sailboat ever built, withthe tallest mast at 295’, which Holland sayswas “an aesthetic choice.” In fact, Mirabella V (renamed m5) was recently stretched to 256' atthe Pendennis shipyard with new interiors fora new owner.

Part of the design team for the first AmericasCup challenge in New Zealand, Holland nowputs his naval expertise to work in teaching atthe University of Auckland’s Master of YachtEngineering program. “I have always beenfascinated by boats,” he admits. “I grew upwith them.”

Mesurant 295 pieds, le mât futconçu par Ron Holland pour des “raisons esthétiques”. Aujourd’hui, Mirabella V (rebaptisé m5) a gagné en pieds dans les chantiers Pendennis pour en faire 256 et arbore de nouveaux intérieurs à la faveur deson dernier propriétaire.

Partie intégrante de l’équipe de designers de l’Americas Cup qui s’est tenu en Nouvelle-Zélande, Ron Holland met aujourd’hui son expertise navale au service del’Université d’Auckland pour le Master en“Yacht Engineering”. “J’ai toujours été fascinépar les bateaux” admet-il. “J’ai grandi avec.”



How do you build a boat to be fast? “It’s all an evolution,” explains Holland. “You have a reference from a benchmark boatand make changes to the design. Make it lighter. Use a larger sail area.” Holland also makes 12’ scale models and drags themalong in the water to project potential speed. “Today you also have computer technology to help your research,” he says, notingthat most clients are more concerned with comfort than speed. But he adds: “We fight like hell to make sure every boat sailswell, based on our racing background.”

Holland also prefers to design aluminum hulls, rather than steel. “Aluminum is a great material for the marine environment,it doesn’t corrode in the salt air,” he notes, adding that many pure racing boats are composite or fiberglass.

Concernant le design des coques, Ron Holland privilégie l’aluminium à l’acier. “C’est un très bon matériau pour l’environnementmarin qui ne s’oxyde pas au contact de l’air salé” note t-il en ajoutant que la plupart des voiliers de course sont en matériauxcomposites ou en fibres de verre.

The regatta is more professional now andback then who would have believed there would be 40 boatsof this size and Americas Cup sailors involved. And you getto visit boats you usually don’t have a chance to see.” Andas a kid growing up reading about the J-Boats from the1930s, Holland marvels: “I would have never believed you’dsee five of them sailing around Saint Barth.” n

Learning to sail“I grew up in England as far as you can get from the water,” Wrightsays with a smile. But the sea was his destiny, and he sailed off to foreign shores in 1986, single-handed, as is his wont, on a 29-footer.“I did not grow up around boats but someone took me sailing off theIsle of Wight for a day sail,” he notes. “I liked the sense of freedomand being able to go where you want. That got me inspired to learnto sail, and a few years later I set off across the ocean.”

Photo ops“I had no real plans and ended up in the Caribbean,” he recalls, adding that the logical thing to do once he ran out of money was totake pictures of boats. By then he was living on a 34’-ft sailboat,

which he took to Bequia where there were lots of charter boats andbare boats. “I’d go around in the morning with framed images,”Wright explains. “I developed them right on the boat.” Eventuallyhe had a darkroom on shore, but the digital era changed everythingand since 1995 Wright has had a website for his images: www.photoaction.com. “Not needing a darkroom makes it easier,but of course now everyone is doing it,” he remarks. Yet at the majorCaribbean regattas, from Saint Barth to Antigua, Wright still makesprints to sell. Today he lives on a 43’ foot boat, Seascape, and sailsfrom regatta to regatta in the winter, while spending the summershooting in Europe, from St Tropez to the Isle of Wight, where hissailing adventures began all those years ago n

Apprendre à naviguer“J’ai grandi en Angleterre assez loin de la mer” dit Wright en souriant. Mais la mer, c’était son destin et en 1986, il vogue sur un 29 pieds en solo - comme à son habitude - sur les mers étrangères.“Je n’ai pas grandi dans l’univers des bateaux mais quelqu’un m’a unjour emmené naviguer le temps d’une journée sur l’île de Wight” dit-il. “J’aime le sentiment de liberté, le fait d’aller là où bon me semble. Ce qui m’a donné l’envie d’apprendre à naviguer et quelquesannées plus tard, j’ai levé l’ancre pour traverser les océans”.

de 34 pieds, qu’il prit à Bequia où se trouvaient de nombreux bateauxcharter et des “coques nues”. “J’y allais le matin prendre quelquesphotos bien cadrées” explique Wright. “Je les développais directement sur le bateau”. Il disposait également d’une chambrenoire sur la côte mais le numérique a changé la donne et depuis1995, Tim Wright publie ses photos sur www.photoaction.com. “Ne pas avoir besoin d’une chambre noire m’a facilité la tâche. Maispour tout le monde également”. Aussi, lors des grandes régates caribéennes, de St Barth à Antigua, Tim Wright continue t-il à développer ses photos pour les vendre. Sumurum sails fastWhat could be more fantastic than a 100 year-old classic racing tovictory? That was case in the Vintage Class, where the 28-meterSumurun took top honors as well as the overall victory in the regatta. A Bermudan ketch, Sumurun was launched in 1914 at thehistoric Fife yard in Fairlie, Scotland. Restored in Italy, this classic beauty took part in the very first edition of the Fife Regattain Scotland in 1998, and proved to be a champion in Antigua.

Stormvogel prevailsA lively battle took place in the Classic Class, with Stormvogel, a22-metre ketch, successfully fending off the closest rival, the 1957Lone Fox—a frequent Panerai winner—to the very end. Built inSouth Africa in 1961, Stormvogel was a joint design effort by Vande Stadt Design of Holland and Englishman Laurent Giles.Stormvogel also races in the Mediterranean, with a class win inthe 2008 Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge.

Francis Eck was born in Alsace on August 7th1949.

He loved nature as a young child and spent mostof his free time in the forests and .elds dreamingand observing the animals, which he reproduced,afterwards, in watercolor. He excelled in sportsas an adult, and went on to become a physicaleducation teacher.

He lived 15 years in his homeland, before a pressing need for the sun and the sea convincedhim to move to the Antilles, where he continuedhis career as a sports teacher for a few more years,before .nally dedicating himself completely toart.

Alone in front of his canevas he found he was able to immerse himself in that wonderful solitude he had so enjoyed as a child. He livedSaint Barthélemy and Guadeloupe for a whilebefore .nally setting in Saint Martin. However,he travels abroad frequently to stimulate andrenew his creative forces.

Nature and particularly the sea are his inexhaus-tible sources of inspiration. Francis is alwayssearching for a way to reach the profound essence of this subject. His powerful colors andharmonious shapes shift the borders betweenthe abstract and the .gurative…

Francis Eck est né en Alsace le 7 août 1949.

Dès son plus jeune âge il est attiré par la natureet passe son temps libre dans les forêts et les prés,à rêver et à observer les animaux qu’il reproduità l’aquarelle. Adulte, il s’épanouit dans diversesdisciplines sportives et devient professeur d’éducationphysique.

Après une quinzaine d’années passées dans sacontrée natale, un impérieux besoin de chaleur etde mer l’amène à demander une mutation pourles Antilles où il exerce encore quelques annéesavant de se consacrer entièrement à la peinture.

Récemment, l’Esmeralda Resort à Orient Bay a investi 2.5 millionsde dollars dans une rénovation au cours de laquelle chacune des 17 villas a été repeinte à l’intérieur comme àl’extérieur de couleurs pastel reposantes. Nous avons installé des stores anticycloniques électriques, ajouté destéléphones, des climatiseurs et des meubles de piscine etde deck neufs et reconstruit tous les patios. Les kitchenettesde toutes les chambres supérieures et de luxe ont été redessinées pour incorporer de nouveaux appareils ménagers et plans de travail. Dans toutes les salles debains les glaces, les lavabos et la robinetterie ont été remplacés et des douches effet pluie installées. La nuit, unéclairage extérieur entièrement refait embellit la propriété.
