TRANSLATORS NOTE

~ The Haran Gawaita, on account of i ts fragmentary charadfer,has suffered more than any other Mandaean text at the hands oflate copyists who emended and edited parts which were faulty ormisunderstood. Their grammatical solecisms and misspellings haveadded to the difEculty of translating an already obscure text. Themost sanguine of translators could hardly claim with a clear con-science that the more dif8cult and involved passages had been ade-quately rendered into English. The present translator isaware thatsome renderings are too free and others too literal, and can only
