PASTOR’S CORNER

Dearest Parishioners, Another year of celebrat-ing Thanksgiving Day! This is a wonderful tradition here in the United States that for many years and many generations, men and women gather together to

give thanks to God and spend time with their fami-ly. Personally, for me, this was one of the things that I enjoyed when I came to the U.S.A. and joined the Carmelites in 1998. A few years ago we began having our Thanksgiving lunch with our sisters, the Carmelite Nuns, at their convent, and as a family we have the opportunity to enjoy the meal pre-pared for them and enjoy a nice time. In the same way I hope you have a great time with your family. We, your Carmelite Fathers, pray for all of you and give thanks to God for everything we have received from Him through you. The best expression of our gratitude to Him is to worship Him and please Him, doing the best we can. May the Lord bless you abundantly and be with you. Happy Thanksgiving Day!

Estimados Parroquianos,

For over 43 million Americans, there is a thin line between eviction and home, between hunger and health, be-tween unemployment and work, between anxiety and stability. This line is the Poverty Line. For a family of four, that line is $24,257 a year.* The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty by funding community programs that encourage independence. You are essential to its success! Your generous donations will give those in poverty the support they need to make lasting changes. Together, we can make a difference in families and communities across the United States. Please donate prayerfully and generously. Thank you.

I missed my parish collection, can I still make a donation? Yes! Send a check or money order to: Catholic Campaign for Human Development Office of National Collections, United States Conference of Catho-lic Bishops P. O. Box 96278, Washington D.C. 20090-6278

SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING

Celebrated on the last Sunday of the liturgical year, the Solemnity of Christ the King was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925 with his encyclical Quas primas to respond to growing secularism. He recognized that attempting to “thrust Jesus Christ and his holy law” out of public life would result in continuing discord among people and na-tions. In 2018, the Church faces pres-sures from without and crisis from within. In addition to the challeng-es that Christians in a secular soci-ety must confront, the body of Christ must also tend to the wounds inflicted on the Church by priests and bishops who either committed acts of sexual abuse themselves or failed to respond to abuse with justice when they had the opportunity. The Solem-nity reminds the faithful that Christ reigns as king of the entire world forever. Let us rededicate ourselves this year to recognizing the reign of Jesus Christ and his Sacred Heart in every aspect of our lives. We profess with our whole lives that Jesus is Lord. “If to Christ our Lord is given all power in heaven and on earth; if all men, purchased by his pre-cious blood, are by a new right subjected to his dominion; if this power embraces all men, it must be clear that not one of our fac-ulties is exempt from his empire. He must reign in our minds, which should assent with perfect submis-sion and firm belief to revealed truths and to the doc-trines of Christ. He must reign in our wills, which should obey the laws and precepts of God. He must reign in our hearts, which should spurn natural desires and love God above all things, and cleave to him alone. He must reign in our bodies and in our members, which should serve as instruments for the interior sanctification of our souls, or to use the words of the Apostle Paul, ‘as instruments of jus-tice unto God.” —Quas primas, 33. We recognize the reign of Christ in public life, as well as private life.

Are you interested in learning more about Carmelite spirituali-ty? The Apostolate of the Little Flower is a nonprofit publication and ministry of the Province of St. Thérèse of the Discalced Carmelite Friars of San Antonio. Its purpose is to spread devotion to St. Thé-rèse of Lisieux, “The Little Flower.” Published quarterly and sent out to approximately 2,000 subscribers, this publication includes arti-cles from our friars on the spirituality of St. Thérèse and the Dis-calced Carmelites. It also shares news from the Basilica and the Province of St. Thérèse. Subscription is free; donations are greatly appreciated to help with publication costs. Established as part of our first apostolate, The Little Flower Maga-zine, reached over 100,000 subscribers in 1923. Recognizing the great devotion of subscribers from all over the country, the friars took as their mission to spread devotion to Thérèse, to prepare for her canonization in 1925, and to build a national shrine in her hon-or. The next issue is releasing soon, so be sure to sign up on our website or at our administration office! https://littleflowerbasilica.org/apostolate-magazine/

For the Campaign for Human Development

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is the national anti-poverty program of the U.S. Catholic Bishops, working to carry out the mission of Jesus Christ "... to bring good news to the poor ... release to captives ... sight to the blind, and let the op-pressed go free." (Luke 4:18) The belief that those who are directly affected by unjust systems and structures have the best insight into knowing how to change them is central to CCHD. CCHD works to break the cycle of poverty by helping low-income people participate in decisions that affect their lives, families and communities. CCHD offers a hand up, not a hand out.
