Our February meeting of-fered several guest speakers covering many important topics. Pet corner

"LOST PETS" What a sad and heart-breaking headline! Anyone who has loved or been loved by a pet knows the heartache that can accompany those two words.

We love our pets. We take good care of our pets. And yet, somehow they sometimes come up missing.

Often they are found with pretty, fancy collars, but no identifying phone numbers, no chips... just a pretty, fancy collar.

Meanwhile, our lost buddy is terri-fied, probably hungry, cold, and drift-ing in a strange and dangerous world.

We need to step up to the responsi-

bility that accompanies pet ownership. Make sure that if our furry family members do find themselves in a lost situation that they can be reunited

with their family again.Chipping can cost as little as $25 at

ALL ABOUT ANIMALS in Warren (586-879-1745) and I.D. tags with your phone number are very reasonable.

We hope that our pets never get lost, but why take a chance?

Also, a good way to acquaint your dog with its neighborhood is to walk it using different routes. That way it will be familiar with its immediate area.

Just some thoughts. My heart breaks for any lost, abused, neglected, or homeless person or animal. We all feel pain and we all need love.

"The thankful heart opens our eyes to a multitude of blessings that continually surround us." Thank you EEV residents for the generous outpouring of assistance to your neighbors during our recent winter storm - whether it was shoveling a walk or driveway, pushing a vehicle stuck in the snow or touching base with a senior to ensure all was well ~ we thank you. Our EEV residents are the BEST ~ always willing to go the extra mile. It's the PEOPLE who live here - the primary reason why EEV remains "A Community of Choice." God bless you all!

St. Clare's St. Patrick's party will take place on Saturday, March 10, from 5:30-11 p.m. in the Church Social Hall. A traditional corned beef dinner and the musical sounds of the Celtic Cross Band are featured. Come, sing and dance the Irish jig with the parish-ioners of St. Clare.

Complete dinner with a drink is $15; beer and wine reasonably priced. Carry out dinner avail-able for $10. Purchase tickets at St. Clare or by contacting Mike McDevitt 313-647-5025.

Our series of Simple Suppers with homemade soup and rolls served in the Social Hall Dining Room from 5:30-7 p.m. will contin-ue on Mondays throughout Lent (March 5, March 12 and March 19).

Everyone is welcome, and we invite our EEV neighbors to join us! A free-will offering from Op-eration Rice Bowl is accepted.

a sign-up sheet at our March General Meeting. Our Land-scaping Contest judging will take place in July and our Annual EEV Garage Sale will be held in August. This way visitors to our neighborhood will be able to take notice of the homes that have been recognized this year.

We are continuing to seek individuals willing to help update and refine our web-site. Please contact Nancy Brigham at [email protected] to volunteer.

Facebook, Nextdoor and our monthly newsletter provide information about trash and recycling pickup days. January’s newsletter contained a calendar insert for the GFL (Green for Life) 2018 pickup schedule. Many thanks to Sue Bourgeois for, once again, designing this helpful tool. Also a big thank you to Susie Lawrence (EEV Facebook) and Lil Cortes (Nextdoor) for faithfully post-ing these important reminders each week. Tickets are being issued for trash containers on

the street prior to 6 p.m. the day before pickup and after 6 p.m. the day of pickup. Please be aware AND remind your neighbors.

We covered the seasonal maintenance program at the general meeting. Please help support our programs that make us a community of choice. Snow plowing costs start at $5,000 per plow – we have 72 blocks and intersec-tions - and we plow curb to curb. We currently have just enough to do one plow at 4 to 6 inches. It is vital that more residents contribute so we don't face another critical situation as we experienced a few weeks ago. Please sup-port this service by clipping and mailing the payment form on the back page of this newsletter or paying by PayPal at eastenglishvillage.org. Many thanks to all who have paid to date.

We continue to sell our EEV marker plaques. Please see your Street Rep at the general meeting for addi-tional details and the article in this newsletter.

Vital information is being gathered about the Special Assessment District program. A review committee for the Special Assessment District is

currently being formed. This committee will review the overall program to present to the residents for consider-ation later this year. If you are interested in working on this committee, please contact Kathy Roddie, Residential Chairperson at [email protected].

Mayor Duggan's State of the City is scheduled for March 6. EEV has established a great working relation-ship with the Mayor's office and City Council and will continue to work closely with them toward improving our little piece of the "D". We will keep you updated on more positive future develop-ments. Hope to see many of

you at the March 14 General Meeting at 7 p.m. potluck with meeting to follow.

Want to get a jumpstart on improving your baseball game? Lakeside Baseball Turf and Cages is a fabu-lous indoor facility offering excellent instruction, batting cages, plenty of base running space AND is located right in our community at 3538 Cadieux Road. I have driven past this space almost daily and never realized what was taking place behind the scenes until I had the oppor-tunity to visit and observe first hand last month. This is Lakeside's fourth year of operation. Their motto is "Lakeside Baseball Club ~ where there is no offseason."

Instructional sessions and clinics are led by experienced and well respected local coaches. Sessions focus on pitching, hitting, fielding and

throwing and are tailored to the age and ability of the player. Lakeside Baseball offers an opportunity to try something new, practice fun-damentals, get a little better or just have fun with friends.

If you are new to the sport come on out and experience why softball is one of the fastest growing sports in the area. If you are a veteran to the game come on out, see old friends and get primed for the upcoming evalua-tions.

For more information, check out the website at: https://lakesidebaseball.sportngin.com/home or con-tact Kevin Nugent, Lakeside Baseball Club (313) 231-9926 and make plans to see it for yourself.

As the snow continues to melt, be careful of puddling on existing ice – slip and falls cause damage, pain and suf-fering. Also, check to see whether your downspouts/gutters are correctly con-nected. Sometimes they come apart and you suddenly discover what appears to be a leak in your roof, but is just a misplaced downspout or uneven gutter. Many of EEV homes have downspouts that go directly into the ground where there is something like a crock receptacle to catch runoff. With excess snow/ice/rain, comes saturated soil and the next thing you know, a leak in your base-ment. If you’re finding this, check to see how water is directed from your roof. I’m no contractor, just another home-owner who wants to keep my money in my own pocket.

This might sound unlikely, but some-times ice on doors does not allow your doors to lock completely. Please check to see that your doors are ice-free and lock when they should.

As the sewers reveal themselves once more, take a moment to note where they are because if we get another dumping of snow, it would be helpful to know their locations. If you notice your drains are covered with errant leaves or debris, take the time to clean them off. If the problem is deeper where you cannot reach, report/con-tact the Detroit Department of Public Works by telephone or use the Improve Detroit online application. For those of you who read about my 2017 experi-ence, you might recall reading how the DPW utilized what I call their “super sucker” vacuum truck to clear out the two catch basins (sewer/drains) nearest me. In one they sucked up – wait for it – a bowling ball! Goodness - you just can’t make that stuff up!

During the recent days when snow warranted city plowing (six consecu-tive inches of snow), contractors hired by the City of Detroit were unable to do several areas in EEV due to many (50-60) vehicles parked on the street. Many residents were unfairly put upon by

neighbors who did not put their vehicles into their own driveways. This situation was further exacerbated by the funding shortage we had in the EEV Snowplow-ing Fund where we were unable to utilize our private service. Please note it is a voluntary fund where it is suggested folks give $35/house. If $35/house per year is too difficult, please contribute whatever you feel you can.

There were several heartwarming sto-ries of folks helping to shovel – multiple

times - snow from neighbors’ walkways and driveways without having been asked or expecting payment in return. There were many heartfelt “thank you’s” called across snow-covered roads. And even some snow creatures!

The MEC Citizens Radio Patrol con-tinues to request all interested folks to contact Beverly Brown at 313.505.8355.
