THINKING BACKBy Geoff Daw
Thinking back to my start in tri-als, in the early sixties I worked
with Barry Chaplin, a very goodsolo rider at that time. He thoughtthat a crack at sidecar trials couldbe quite a good challenge. Howright he was, we were quite compet-itive on his 500 H.S Ariel outfit, until he picked up a leg injury.
So now a go solo, first a Norman197 then I built a small 118cc Su-zuki,
a Greeves 250, purchased a 125Honda built by Dusty Miller andfirst ridden by a Mr J Turner ofsidecar fame, still keen on this side-car lark. I built a Tribsa 500, thena Cotton 250 lightweight all on theroad, centre stuff. One section, noeasy route. I had a break for awhile; children growing up keeps
you pretty busy.Until Eric Kinnard,a one time passen-ger of mine, invit-ed me over to theAlma on a Tuesday.E.F.A. here I come!I started withthose smoking-oildripping C15 -Cubs.
![Page 4: HAPPY NEW YEAR TRIALS](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022020620/61e2c85dd7c9841af0546318/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
then I had an ace idea. I built a175 BSA Bantam, (not so ace.)That’s when the pee taking start-ed, straight from the top i.e.President and Chairman. Theyran it into the ground the poorthing, it had just enough powerto crawl out of Ballingdon Groveas you can see in the picturebeing studied by big bike man
Mr Malcolm Adams. And now who rides a nice shinyB.S.A JAP Bantam? – as anE.F.A member I think thick skin isa desirable asset. I’ve passengeredIan on my Ossa outfit or Ozza ashe called it, check the driver’s bodylean, all over the place, but as youcan see by his arm waving, passen-ger fault again, no blame on the
riders shoulders! What will theysay now I’ve a Bultaco? Great club, most enjoyable, what would we dowithout the E.F.A? Think I mighttake up pee taking.Geoff D.

PEDRO’S PATTERBoxford Bash a trial which producedsome interesting results, severalretirements mostly machine prob-lems John Kendal had a good dayclosely tracked by Graham Bray-brook & Mark Fletcher, beating offthe twin-shocks on the hard route. Ithought the 50/50 was appreciatedproviding a stepping stone for thecompetitive types. On form RogerFinch aced it on the Sprite whilstAlan Robinson proved the sectionplanning good by topping out on 1on easy route. Ever improving youngStephen Parker had a great ride on14 winning the youth class, this per-formance I think is due to Dad Dav-id's nurturing and effort by Stephengood to see! Thanks to Phil & sonElliot, Chris Canham, Ian Preedy &Graham Braybrook for section plot-ting and as always the willing ob-servers, thanks! The Woodbridgetrial 27th Dec. saw Mark Fletcheredging the Enfield for 30, in the unitclass young Daniel Carter beat JohnKendal 15/21! A great result forvery enthusiastic rider. Easy route;a inspired Colin Rose (note theshiny new tank) tied on '0' for topspot in front of Alan Robinson 3,Richard Challis 8, John 'racer' Ruth9, Trevor Hill 11, John Carter(Daniel's dad) clocked 12 on verytidy B40, Mum always observes, thanks! Two-stroke class on goingfeuding twixt Greg Radley & DaveGodley the latter on 10 whilst Greg& 'big Fletch' tied on 12. Twin-shock; Kevin Plummer & Gary Eavestied on zero, Colin Teager dabbedhere & there for 5 good result by allespecially the section plotters!!
Stephen Parker had another goodone 9, dad David 22, next up thebattle of the Whreathall's Richard16, brother Bob 17 both improving!!Mark Teager shouldn't be disap-pointed on 19, Howard Plush hasreason to be first time out on hisrecently acquired Fantic beaten byluvly young lady Elizabeth Bush onHonda 50!!! 33/34. Back to thedrawing board! Completing the EFAmember roundup Doug Maggsfought the Taco round for 70, muchmuttering!! Hope I've not missedanyone if I have, you'll have writeyou're own article. I'm sure editorChris would welcome! (most certain-ly even if Pedro hasn’t missed any-thing Ed.) Thanks Woodbridge gooddo and you got the weather righttoo! It was also good for Braintree'strial at Twinstead on Friday 30th,pre-65, twinshock, modern, easy,50/50, hard routes 15 good sectionsinteresting terrain, I observed somegood performances especially GuyStanley riding 50/50 on 'scrapyard'sponsored Enfield rigid doing thehard route on sect 8 for 1 each lap!!Almost worth the 3-5 hr cold observ-er duty! Well it's now 1-1-2012 I'mnow warmer! the results have ar-rived, but I can't fathom them!!? Sowithout more ado, happy riding , off& on road, remember all other roadusers are idiots, especially trilbywearers. Your new Year resolution isput something back into our No.1club! Adios.

This was the twenty second runningof the very popular and well organ-
ised Jack Thompson Trial. As alwaysthis is run at Canada Heights in
Swanley, Kent. Canada heights remainone of those spectacular and historicvenues where motorcycle sport inmany off road forms has takenplace for many years. This hasgiven much pleasure to com-petitors and spectators alikefor decades and hopefully willcontinue to do so for manymore. The drops and climbs situatedwithin this rugged piece ofland makes for exciting ridingwhether the day is dry or wet. Many past Jack Thompsontrials here have taken place invery wet ground conditions. Ido not have to wrack my mem-ory too much to visualise dearold ‘Claggy Maggie’ in all her glory,as we enthusiasts struggled tomake it up the slippery exit bank
with legs rotating like that old and lova-ble character ‘Captain Pugwash’. Hewas from the children’s television se-ries that we all so avidly watched on
twelve inch screens when we werejust tiny little (innocent?) sprogs. If Captain Pugwash had been atrials rider he would have suc-cessfully footed through everyslippery section no matter whatconditions prevailed! He had thetype of legs I envy which couldprobably turn my five’s back intothree’s and therefore would havemade my trials riding just that bitmore successful. I now wish I hadpaid closer attention to that won-derful pre-technological pro-gramme that was so budgetconscious when shown on thoseminute monochrome screened
goggle boxes of yore. These Cath-ode Ray Tubes were contained infreestanding veneered, posh and
polished plywood cabinets. More workfor my ‘Dear Old Mum Sally’ with theJohnsons Wax and yellow duster!

But I digress, but only be-cause I knew that‘camcorder man’ BrianHodges was at this eventand I anticipate he will dohis usual ’blow by blow’report for the TSM in hisown informative style. So!Well done Brian for all thepast and present reportsthat your followers regular-ly read and enjoy. The Jack Thomp-son Trial was first run wayback in 1990 (how timeflies when you are havingfun) but only four ridershave accomplished everyevent since then. Theseconnoisseurs of mud are thelovable Joan Westbrook,John Pattinson accompanied by hisnew ‘trick knee joint’, Les Matton with
streamlined eternal beard and last butnot least, Bob Onley bouncing about
on top of a Girder forked Velocette, well someone has to! Don’t they? The battle for the ‘Last Man Stand-ing’ trophy is now well and truly on!Come on that lady!!! You are myfavourite. You might know that sometimes in reports I mention Ali Tan-ner who has a continuing urge forkissing my wife. This does him apower of good so I am all for it. ButAli wasn’t present so could not dohis welcomed duty. But all was notlost because Alan Ketley kindlystepped into his shoes at the elev-enth hour. I did not manage tospeak to Alan on the day because Idid not see him there. But thankyou Alan for taking over Ali Tannersduties; you are now officially thefirst reserve!! Great friends andcharacters these trials riders aren’t
they? In places the trial this yearwas a little easier but Dick Dickensonmade sure there was no embarrass-

ment by manning a special test whichworked very well indeed. OriginallyBilled for eighteen sections but due todedicated observers was upped totwenty sections on the day. This
caught out my son Ste-ve on his very firstJack Thompson trialas he missed sectionsnineteen and twenty. But there again it justruns in the family Isuppose, because inthe past I have missedseveral sections myselfhere. Thank you tothe Clarke family andall those other organis-ers who make thisevent happen everyyear, not forgettingPeter Burrell who sitsin a metal containerbashing those littlesquare buttons calledkeys and getting the
results out PDQ. I am sure he wouldprefer bashing the byways somewherein Europe as he is a proper motorcycleenthusiast. You can see the results on the
Sidcup Clubs websiteand read Brian Hodgesblow by blow report inthe TSM so no need forme to repeat thingshere. If you have neverbeen to a motorcycleevent at CanadaHeights yet then youdon’t know what youare missing! Get alongthere forthwith andenjoy yourself. Youknow it makes sense. You might even get tokiss my wife and saveme the effort when Iget home!

Hi Terry & Chris,
The rider on the Ariel (EFA ID) 10, is definitely the Late Mick Bridger. Hewas the man who made alloy tanks, and other alloy goodies (originally).Sammy Miller was one of his customers.
Mick was a member of the Kent and Sussex club of which my good friendJohn Excell still belongs to. Micks Ariel is currently campaigned by MarkBaker son of Derek also from the same club.
The other rider climbing a slope on what looks like a Tiger Cub seems tobe Gordon Davis. But don't quote me on this as I cannot be completelysure from a rear view!!!!!!
Gordon is still about riding with the West Kent Section of the VMCC on aroad Cub. He is in his late 70s now and has done several charity ridesfrom John O Groats to lands End. He is a regular observer at trials inthe South Eastern area. He was centre team manager on many occasions.
Hope this helps a little.
Dave Blanchard.
It seems the request to identify the three mystery riders in Terry Howesphotographs published in last months T&T has been successful. Below
is an email I received from Dave Blanchard regarding two of them.(The Greeves rider has been identified as D. Oldham)
