Romans 13:7 says to give honor where honor is due and mothers are a good place to do that. I’ve spent time considering several of the women who have had an impact on my life. I’m thankful for each one and realize that the Lord intentionally placed them so that I may learn. Elizabeth Andersen was my paternal grandmother and a sweet little lady. Born in Nebraska, she worked hard all her life. Her arm was injured in a farming ac- cident as a little girl fixing her elbow at 90°. An accident later in life left her with a fused hip and one shortened leg. Yet as a little boy I remember her busily moving around her kitchen, awkward as it was, constantly serving anyone and everyone. Anna Jensen was my maternal grandmother. A pioneer born at the end of the 19th Century, her family homesteaded in the northern Midwest and made a life for themselves. She lived with the same tenacity and was married by 20, had two kids, bought a farm, and widowed by 27. Never remarrying, she worked the farm until the Great Depression forced her to move on. She showed me that anyone can do anything they set their minds to. Gladys Andersen was my mother, and I miss her. She was always there, loving, caring, nurturing, and encouraging. Her gentle ways could cause you to miss her purposeful plans. She did things with excellence (obviously the genetic source of my perfectionism). She was meticulous, administrative and a housewife of sorts that would give Harriet Nelson a run for her money. She loved the Lord, she loved my dad, and she loved us kids. Anna Hayford is my mother-in-law. I’d heard people’s in-law nightmares and was prepared—but it just hasn’t happened. What I’ve seen is a woman whose deep love for Jesus and undying dedication to living and serving Him with each breath has created a balanced and beautiful woman. She never gives up on anyone, and though referred to as the “quiet woman behind the man,” she’s a woman of incredible ability and power in her own right. Christa Andersen is my loving wife of 23 years (today!). Gifted, brilliant, and capable, she was raised to be submitted to Jesus’ plans above all else. She can accomplish anything, though is often too humble to admit it. She keeps our home functioning and filled with joy, and when we get those moments alone with each other she makes me feel like I’m the most important person in the world—in those times I remember why I fell in love with her in the first place. Her insightfulness and discernment are powerful gifts. She really is the perfect match for my life and a fantastic mother to our kids. I’m thankful that the Lord put these special women in my life. Each of them has taken part in causing me to become the man I am, and their lives still shape me as I become the man God intends. Happy Mother’s Day!
