*************************************** Here is a story for Mother’s day: Tom rented an ocean co age for a two-week vaca on. Before driving to the beach with his wife, he made a solemn promise to himself that for the next two weeks he would be the kind of husband that he knew he could be and should be. And so he began. For two weeks he didn’t call his office. For two weeks he was though ul. For two weeks he was loving and caring. Only one thing went wrong on that vaca on. And that happened on the last night. Tom caught his wife staring at him with a deeply concerned look on her face. He looked at her and said, “Honey, what in the world is wrong?” Tears rolled down her cheeks as she said, “Do you know something I don’t know?” “What do you mean?” he responded. “Well,” she said, “last week I went to the doctor for a checkup. You’ve been so kind to me, Tom. Tell me the truth. Did he tell you something about me? Did he say I had cancer? Did he say I’m going to die? Is that why you’ve been so good to me, Tom?” It took a full minute for her remarks to sink in. Then Tom broke into a laugh. With First Holy Communion coming up, we have been asked. My parish does not give the sacrament of confession to children until two years after they have re-ceived First Communion. I have heard that this is in violation of what Rome says, but my priest says otherwise. Who is right? You are. The 1983 Code of Canon Law says, “It is the responsibility, in the first place, of parents and those who take the place of parents as well as of the pastor to see that children who have reached the use of reason are correctly prepared and are nourished by the divine food as early as possible, preceded by sacramental confession” (CIC 914). Cutting out the opening words relevant to parents, the canon says, “It is the responsibility. . . of the pastor to see that children who have reached the use of reason. . . are nourished by the divine food as early as possible, preceded by sacramental confession” (CIC 914). Your priest has a responsibility under the Code of Canon Law to see that the children of your parish are given the instruction and opportunity for sacramental confession prior to their reception of First Communion. The importance of this has been re-emphasized by the Vatican in the Catechism of the Catholic Church: “Children must go to the sacrament of penance before receiving Holy Communion for the first time” (CCC 1457). If your parish does not supply its children with the instruction and opportunity for confession prior to First Communion, it is in violation of the Vatican’s directives.

Saint Philip Philip was born in Bethsaida, Galilee. He may have been a disciple of John the Baptist and is mentioned as one of the Apostles in the lists of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and in Acts. Aside from the lists, he is mentioned only in John in the New Testament. He was called by Jesus Himself and brought Nathanael to Christ. Philip was present at the miracle of the loaves and fishes, when he engaged in a brief dialogue with the Lord, and was the Apostle approached by the Hellenistic Jews from Bethsaida to introduce them to Jesus. Just before the Passion, Jesus answered Philip's query to show them the Father, but no further mention of Philip is made in the New Testament beyond his listing among the Apostles awaiting the Holy Spirit in the Upper Room. According to tradition he preached in Greece and was crucified upside down at Hierapolis under Emperor Domitian. His feast day is May 3. The Synoptic Gospels list Philip as one of the apostles. The Gospel of John recounts Philip's calling as a disciple of Jesus.[Jn 1:43] Philip is described as a disciple from the city of Bethsaida, and the evangelist connects him with Andrew and Peter, who were from the same town. He also was among those surrounding John the Baptist when the latter first pointed out Jesus as the Lamb of God. It was Philip who first introduced Nathanael (sometimes identified with Bartholomew) to Jesus.[3] According to Butler, Philip was among those attending the wedding at Cana.
