snatch a kiss upon arriving to her house were shotdown, as Alice reports, “ I told him, whoa, a kisswasn’t part of the bargain!” Alice’s marriage wouldbless her and her husband with three children in-cluding a son and two daughters, Alice’s son un-fortunately passed away; however, her twodaughters are very active in her life and she takesgreat pride in them and all of her extended fam-ily.

Taken a step back prior to her marriage, Al-ice reports that there were certainly tough timesthat strengthened her character, reporting that by18 she no longer had parents and was “on her ownin the world.” This didn’t stop here; she beganwork in South Dakota earning 37 dollars permonth in a one room school house as a teacher,her educational career would continue in Michi-gan where she served in the Hamilton school dis-trict.

To this day, Alice contin-ues to teach those aroundher, from the example shesets fervently completingcrosswords daily (just wokedown A-hall and see andsee!) to the words of wisdomand warm friendly presenceshe shares with all, not tomention, her unwaveringhumble and loving nature iscertainly something wecould all strive for more ofin our lives, who knows,maybe if anyone readingthis now makes it to 104they will achieve that skill!Happy birthday Alice andthank you for being you!!!

Alice DenbestenWhat is the secret one might ask to living to

100 years old, or what about 104?? AliceDenbesten could tell you as she quickly ap-proaches her 104th birthday on September24th, born in 1924 she has surpassed her entirefamily which included 10 children in all, her sis-ter lived to be 106, good genes run in her fam-ily for sure! When asked, the recipe for longevi-ty she acknowledged, “I never drank norsmoked,” in addition citing that her avid crossword playing has kept her mind sharp- as- a- tack,crossword playing that she began at the age of tenyears old, so if you are good at math (this authorisn’t) that’s 94 years of crossword playing!! Canyou imagine? How many of you reading this rightnow can report attending to a hobby that long,extraordinary, way to go Alice! Her other advice,which one could reason requires even more self-discipline than anything, is simply to, “stay hap-py.” Alice accredits her fam-ily for her happy demeanor,“I came from a happy fam-ily and this is how I lived mylife.”

Happiness was alsofound in Alice’s marriage toher husband of 52 years,whom she loving recalledthe story of their first meet-ing; An encounter that in-cluded him offering her aride home while she was outwalking with friends, a ridehome, not a grand gesture in2019, however in Alice’syouth that was a bold offer,which, she boldly accepted,however, his attempts to

For nearly 15 years, Sandy has served dili-gently in her role as head of housekeeping hereat Appledorn south, she describes her work hereas the following:

“I spent 17 years working for Donnelly priorto coming here to Appledorn and was devas-tated when my position was cut, however, thisled me to Appledorn which has been life chang-ing for me, I changed my whole way of livingfor the better and found joy in the enrichmentI was and still provide the residents on a dailybasis.”

Fun fact about Sandy (as if having 6 pygmygoats weren’t enough) is that she is very me-chanically inclined and is able to think outsidethe box when taking things apart/putting themback together, she has even repaired major ma-chinery here including a drier which at the time,the head of maintenance was unable to do (notAndy!), she also reports loving to golf and lov-ing music of all genres with the exception ofrap.

Well Sandy, we aresinging praises to you andyour staff here for all thehard work that your teamdoes to keep this buildinglooking amazing, keep upthe good work!!

Staff Anniversaries

Born on December 17, to Jerome andKathryn Kratz, Sandy was the middle of threechildren in her family. Uniquely, Sandy wasborn December 17th and her were born on the16th and 18th of the same month. Sandy’s fa-ther was a brick layer by trade and her motherwas a homemaker. The middle of three chil-dren, they were raised in Hamtramck Michiganwhich is a small town, (2.2 miles to be exact)on the east side of the state. A side of the statethat Sandy continues to enjoy visiting, espe-cially going on road trips with her good friendTrish. Sandy’s hobbies are vast, from golfing topampering and caring for her six pygmy goats;goats that she cares for like her own children,which she reports all have their own unique per-sonality; Sandy’s goats can bark, enjoy a cup ofmorning coffee, faint and recover, drink Coca-Cola, shake hands, and even give kisses. “Theyput a smile on my face and the world meltsaway,” she reports regarding the impact herpygmy goats have had in her life.

Other things makeSandy smile and the world“melt away,” including herhusband Ron of 12 years,with an upcoming Septem-ber 8th wedding anniver-sary, Happy AnniversarySandy and Ron!

Administrator NotesDear Residents, Families, Staff, and Friends of

Appledorn South,I recently completed my 1 year anniversary as the

Administrator of Appledorn Assisted Living CenterSouth! Hard to believe that I have been here a yearalready. I want to thank everyone for being so wel-coming and allowing me to become part of theAppledorn family.

The thing I appreciate most about this past year isthe new relationships and friendship that have beencreated. The people that you work with and interactwith on a daily basis make a huge difference in job sat-isfaction. I have learned that there is an amazing groupof people—residents, families, and coworkers—atAppledorn South!

One of the ideas that has been rolling around inmy head has been the idea of care. We are in the careproviding business, but as I watch the interactionsbetween the residents and staff I realize that people donot come to this environment because they want to“receive care” but because they want to be “cared for.”This is what I appreciate about the amazing staff atAppledorn. I appreciate walking around and seeingpeople being cared for. It goes beyond just complet-ing the task of care but getting to know and caring forthe person.

Again thank you for welcoming me to the Apple-dorn family and I look forward to what the next yearswill bring!
