Foundation of Central Georgia

Thanks to everyone who bravedthe cold at the first annual FlySouth Festival this past weekend.

We couldn’t have asked for more as thefirst year event saw a huge crowd gatherat Luther Williams Field despite recordlows. The venue was beautiful, thesound was great, and the bands blew usall away. It’s not every day talent likethat gathers in Macon Georgia, and thefolks at Bragg Jam couldn’t be happierthat we got to put such a great eventtogether. Now, it’s time to begin workon the annual July bar crawl. Wow.

This issue will take us thruChristmas, and on December 28 you’llsee the list of nominees in the paper for2009’s Reader’s Choice Awards. Asalways, plenty of surprises are in storefor the actual awards show. It will be anight filled with music, laughter, andplenty of golden baby dolls.

We also are launching a partnershipwith the Community Foundation of

Central Georgia this issue called TheSuperfund. We’ve always had to pinchpennies, and are fine with the fact thatmay never change, but through manytalks with the good folks at CFCG, wecame up with a way for everyone togive, even if it’s just the change in theirpockets. The Superfund is a way for alot of people to give a little bit of moneyto worthy causes in our community. Ifwe can get 200 people in our city topledge just $10 bucks a month we’ll beable to give away almost $25,000 a year. All of this can easily be done throughour a safe, secure website and you canfind the link at 11thhouronline.com.

This year, we decided to make thebeneficiaries the Georgia Music Hall ofFame and the Cox Capitol Theatre. Readhow to be a part inside on page 4. Itdoesn’t take a lot to make a difference. And I think it’s the time of year whenmaking a difference should be weighingon our minds.

DECEMBER 10 - 28,20094 11thHourOnline.com

The Superfund, a new crowd-funding initiative developed by The 11thHour is an innovative way to involve citizens in philanthropy, and use thepower of many small gifts ($10 a month!) to make a big impact.

Little Money Big Results. That’s the idea behindThe Superfund, created by The 11th Hour, andthe Community Foundation of Central Georgia.

Crowdfunding describes the collective cooperation, attention and trust by people who network and pooltheir money together, usually via the Internet, in orderto support efforts initiated by other people or organiza-tions. This is exactly what the Superfund aims to do.We all want to make our community a better place tobe, and each year, the readers of the 11th Hour willidentify two causes that will benefit from a pool ofmoney that we, as a community, create. The idea is thateven if we don’t have thousands of dollars to give tocauses we believe in, we can pool just the change in ourpockets together and make a huge difference. If 200people commit to give just $10 a month to this fund, wewould have $24,000 a year to give away.

“The Superfund is an innovative way to involvecitizens in philanthropy, and use the power of manysmall gifts to make a big impact!” says Kathryn Dennis,President of CFCG, “ The Community Foundation ofCentral Georgia is honored to partner with the 11thHour, its readers, and the citizens of Macon to collec-tively make our community a better place to live .”

This fund gives you the opportunity to give a smallamount, on a monthly basis to causes that help improvethe quality of life in Macon, Georgia, through a safe andsecure website hosted by the Community Foundation.Go to www.11thhouronline.com to join today.

Your contributions for January 1, 2010 - January2011 will support the following organizations:

Cox Capitol TheatreCox Capitol Theatre is a symbol of community and acornerstone in the revitalization effort of downtownMacon. They present a diverse programming thatattracts a varied audience, including family and classicfilm; local, regional and national musical artists; andlive theatre offered in a unique dinner theatre setting. The Capitol also partners with other organizations thatshare our vision of a vibrant downtown – presentingconcerts with the Big House Foundation and serving asa venue for The Macon Film Festival and Bragg Jam.

The theatre is beautifully restored – and expensive tooperate and maintain.

They have recently launched a fundraising cam-paign with the goal of 1.3 million dollars to fund façadeimprovements, equipment upgrades, stage and lightingenhancement, kitchen expansion as well as provideoperational support and pay off the original renovationloan. Ticket income accounts for less than one quarterof total income and is supplemented by income fromprivate rentals. Fundraisers and contributions from indi-viduals, corporations and foundation grants fund almosthalf of the theatre’s expenses.

Your donation to the Super Fund helps the CapitolTheatre keep the doors open, the projector running, andthe stage rocking. Thanks for your support.

Georgia Music Hall of FameThe Georgia Music Hall of Fame preserves and inter-prets the state’s rich music heritage through programs ofpreservation, education, exhibition and performance.Located in the heart of downtown Macon, the museumshares the stories of over 100 inductees. As steward ofthese legacies, the Music Hall of Fame welcomes visi-tors from all over the world to Macon and provides edu-cational programs for students of all ages.

“The Georgia Music Hall of Fame belongs toMacon, Georgia, and if locals continue to take owner-ship, we can make downtown rock.” Says Lisa Love,Director of the Hall of Fame. “Join us in proving tothose Atlantans who have so ungraciously dissed Maconjust how deeply this community cares about music andthis museum.”

The State of Georgia has provided generous finan-cial support to the development and upkeep of theMusic Hall of Fame in Macon since it opened in1996. That funding, however, has been reduced signif-icantly in the past two years. Now, more than ever, memberships and private contributions provide vitalsupport necessary to sustain the museum and grow itsprograms, such as MIKE, Music in Kids Education, and the Otis Redding Singer/Songwriter Camp forages 12-17 each June. - Brad Evans

TIM BAGWELL, pastor of CentenaryMethodist Church [email protected]

Christmas does not have to be perfect. Yet we are seduced by themessage that you can buy or receive the perfect gift, or serve or eatthe perfect meal, or be surrounded by the perfect loving family, or

be perfectly loving and tranquil ourselves. Christmas does not have to becompletely merry and bright.

The key player in Luke’s birth narrative is Mary and that firstChristmas had to be traumatic on many levels for her. We have a tendencyto superimpose our mistaken impressions of her as we look back in time.We see her as peaceful, beatific, dressed in pastels (usually light blue). The accuracy of our perception should be questioned.

Here we have an unexplained teenage pregnancy and an engagementthat nearly ended. My guess is that some of those close to Mary thoughtshe was loony because she was talking with angels. Then she had to makean uncomfortable trip to Bethlehem, could not find a room, gave birth in abarn, and had to flee to Egypt. Easy? Peaceful? Merry? Bright? No way!

Mary is not asked to provide the perfect environment for the birth ofJesus. All God asked of Mary is her consent: she is asked to place herselfin God’s hands, give God room to work, make herself available to whatev-er God is planning. She does not hide her surprise; she does not suppressher questions. She wonders out loud what God could possibly have inmind by asking her to serve under these conditions. And then…. Andthen… And then… she says, “Yes.”

The “yes” did not turn out as she expected. It never does. Every“yes” involves complications, trouble, misunderstandings, hard work, hurtfeelings, successes, and failures. And sometimes “yes” brings us to a pointof anguish.

We are not called to wrestle out of the chaos of our lives the perfectfamily Christmas, or the perfect spiritual moment, or even the perfect con-templative emptiness in which to welcome God. Our calling is more likeMary’s: to wonder what God could possibly have in mind, and then to say“Yes” and take what comes.

DECEMBER 10 - 28,20096 11thHourOnline.com

A new revolving column by City Council mem-bers Rick Hutto, Nancy White & Larry Schlesingerabout city politics and community news

the city scene

Twas the night before Christmas andthroughout City Hall, Council members

were stirring, still making calls,Resolutions were churning from the copi-

er still hot, In hopes that the voterswould think we do lots

Employees were packing and clearingtheir desks, With visions of going hometo holiday guests, Andrew loosened his

tie, Keith tossed off his cap, They settledtheir brains for an office cat nap

When out in Council Chambers therearose such a clatter, I ran to the hall tosee what was the matter, Down the car-

peted aisle I flew like a flash, Just intime to hear a loud crash

The florescent lights of that big austereroom, Gave luster of midday to the

object tumbling in, When what to mywondering eyes should appear, But a big

metal bench bouncing in to a cheer

With a bright little lady so lively and dar-ing, I knew in a moment it must be MissSarah, More rapid than eagles her cours-ers they came, She whistled and shouted

and called them by name

Now Anita! Now Elaine! Now Rick! Now Tom!, Now Henry! Now Leroy!Let’s get it done!, To the top of CherryStreet! To the front of The Dempsey!,

Get the bench back in front and I’ll feelmuch more Merry!

As the dry leaves that before a wild hur-ricane fly, When they meet with an

obstacle mount to the sky, So down to the Dempsey the coursers

they flew, With the bench in tow and anextra one too

Then in a twinkling I heard on City Hallroof, Some prancing and pawing and thesound of “woof woof”, As I looked outthe door and was turning around, Here

came AC pup running with a bound

He was dressed all in fur since of coursehe’s a dog, He brought not a list but aheavy book log, It was his gift list, heasked us to look, Nearly 2,000 names

long, friends made on Facebook

But suddenly I heard heavy boots on theground, An army I thought so I turned

right around, The Chief of Police wasleading his troops, While a Sgt. named

Draper was staging a coup

He spoke not a word but went straight tohis work, He placed out a ballot box thenturned with a jerk, And laying his fingeraside of his tattoos, He called for a union

vote along with their dues

Again came the leaves that before thewild hurricane fly, They met with an

obstacle, they mounted to the sky, Thehail and the fury, the thunder and thestorm, It came with a vengeance and

Johnny, he was gone

The lightening by the sidewalk in frontof City Hall, Struck the Christmas tree

broadside and caused it to fall, It fell onour torch, it burst into flame, And we had

no EMA director, oh what a shame

Then up pulled a driver, so lively andquick, I knew in a moment it must be

Mayor Reich, More rapid than eagles hiscoursers they came, And he whistled and

shouted and called them by name

Now Thomas, now Marvin, now Mike, now Ben, There’s a crisis in Macon

thanks to City Council whim, On Tom,on Pope, on Barbara and Gene, We’ll set-tle this ourselves you’ll see what I mean

He wasn’t chubby or plump, but still aright jolly elf, And I laughed when I sawhim in spite of myself, A wink of his eyeand a twist of his head, Soon gave me to

know I had nothing to dread

He spoke not a word but went straight tohis work, He filled the EMA Directorposition straight by the book, He con-founded City Council who before hadbeen a bully, His pick was none other

than Captain Chelsey Sully

Then he sprang to his sleigh, to his teamgave a whistle, And away they all flewlike the down of a thistle, But I heardhim exclaim ere he drove out of sight,

Merry Christmas to all, and to Macon asafe night!

“boughs of holly” reflect the English tradition. Inthe American South, holly was supplemented withother indigenous evergreens, among them pine, cedar, magnolia and smilax. Evergreens were usedfor Christmas decorating at a time of year whenflowers were scarce. These greens were gathered theold-fashioned way by going to the woods andsearching out just the right boughs, branches, andsprigs to give the house its festive air for this mostfestive season. Thursday, 12/10The Red Swill with Come On Gowith Us @ The HummingbirdFun Good Time Front Porch Pickin Music bythe likes of one of Macon’s best musicians andSongwriters, Jared Wright. Typical country ref-erences to San Antone, intonations that recallAppalachian bluegrass and beautifully flowingcreek melodies give a disorienting feeling.“Confusion doesn’t surprise me,” says leadsinger and primary songwriter, Jared Wright.“My influences come from all over.”

Friday, 12/11The Mighty McFly @ EL AztecaMighty McFly is one of the best unsigned origi-nal bands in the USA. They are overwhelminglyentertaining to watch and also some of the bestmusicians to be found anywhere. They are influ-enced by Queen, Van Halen, Journey, Prince, Sly& the Family Stone, among others.

Thieves & Pastors @ The BirdT and P are a four piece indie/showgaze bandbased out of Atlanta and Athens Ga. whom startedplaying late January of 2009, a collection ofdeceased local indie bands that graced ColumbusGab, they play indie rock at it’s finest

Robert Lee Coleman @ LocosSee Editor’s Picks, above.

Ashutto Mirra @ Rivalry’s Ashutto Mirra is an alternative rock group basedout of Athens. This four member group consists ofScott Rainwater (lead vocals, guitar), JoshBirmingham (drums, vocals), Pat Yoe (bass), andDoyle Williams (guitar). Ashutto Mirra recordsand performs original songs that are intelligentlywritten, well arranged, and always rockin’.Ashutto Mirra is currently recording an album atAthens based, Shade Tree Studios.

Larry G Hudson @ Polly’s Upstairs BarHe used to cut Merle’s hair, but he had some seri-ous hits on Music Row back in the day, and he’s agood a guitar picker as there is in this town. Fun,original , outlaw country good time music.

Plainfield Project @ Wild Wing Café“This newly-established rock/reggae/funk bandmust have earned a ton of new fans really quicklywith those gigs at O'Malley's and along KingStreet this winter; featuring singer/guitarist (and

TV reality show winner) Ben Fagan and formermembers of One Night Stand."

Saturday, 12/12The Scott Little Band with RustySwinger @ The HummingbirdAn accident? Maybe so, but from his debutrelease "Storyteller" to his latest "Living With theTruth", Scott lets us know that he's mastered thecraft. The title alone tells you that sometimes lifeisn't always what it should be - but it makes uswho we are. Songs like "High Life" offer thatfeeling of knowing when it's right, while "SundayNight on Broadway" takes you to the depths ofloneliness, and "Little Bit of Rain" - an emotionalduet with Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls - givesyou that one shred of hope that things will alwaysget better.

Lloyd Dobbler Effect @ Wild Wing CaféSee Editor’s Picks, above.

Friday, 12/18Jeremy Johnson @ CJ’sPart of St. Francis, Jeremy Johnson is as good aguitar picker and a singer as they come. He’s gotgreat covers, great originals, and is great to layback and listen too.

EG Kight @ The RookeryAn early show with Georgia songbird EG starts at8pm. EG has been nominated for six Blues MusicAwards, twice for Song Of The Year. Two of hersongs landed on Koko Taylor’s Grammy®-nomi-nated albums, and three can be found on Saffire –The Uppity Blues Women’s recent release.

Saturday, 12/19Diane Durrett @ Rivalry’sShe’s good. She’s damn good.” Sting’s summa-tion of his duet with singer songwriter DianeDurrett speaks for anyone who’s ever heard herperform. A Memphis reporter once wrote that “Ifyou don’t go see her she may just come see you!”With a blend of raw soulful vocals, sultry tonesand strong original songs Durrett has sung with oropened for Sting, Tina Turner, Delbert McClinton,The Indigo Girls, Faith Hill, Patty Loveless,Gregg Allman and Derek Trucks.

Country Music Legend CHARLIELOUVIN @ The HummingbirdSee Editor’s Picks, above.

Saturday, 12/26OldStar Featuring Shane Bridges @Wild Wing CaféShane Bridges, after bangin on the door to gettinghuge with Acoustic Workshop started Oldstar, which gained attention in Nashville for him as asongwriter. It’s a more laidback, more jayhawkskind of vibe , that we can’t wait to hear again.

New Year’s EveRadio Cult @Wild Wing CaféDo you miss the days when it was OK to wear legwarmers and jelly shoes? Well, actually, neitherdo we! ...but we do miss cheesy $10 videos onMTV, Flock of Seagulls hair styles and music thatwas FUN! Radio Cult is here to rock out 80sstyle! They do it all!

Random Family Records Presents @The Cox Capitol TheatreThe best thing about this city is its people and onNew Year's Eve this year, we're going to kick2009 out the door with a big ol' celebration ofself. Imagine knowing in high school what youknow now and imagine then being in high schoolwithout having to go to classes. There'll be music, but it won't be a concert. There'll be some danc-ing, but it won't be a nightclub. There'll be party-ing but it won't just be a party; it'll be an event.

Project 77 @ 20s PubThis group of local musicians plays all your clas-sic rock favorites,, and they do it well. Get yourdancing shoes on because this is going to be onefun new years eve.

Col Bruce Hampton and the QuarkAlliance @ The HummingbirdCol. Bruce has been making music since heformed his first band in 1963 an he’s been in con-stant motion ever since leaving a trail of memo-rable live performances with his many bands, including The Late Bronze Age and TheAquarium Rescue Unit. Along the way heappeared in the movie "Sling Blade" and starredin Mike Gordon's cult classic "Outside Out" as amystical guitar 'out'structor. Since 2006, TheColonel has been playing a unique blend of bluesand jazz with his band Col. Bruce & The QuarkAlliance, featuring Kris Dale (bass), Perry Osborn(guitar) and Duane Trucks (drums).

Friday, Dec 11A benefit for the GA Music Hallof Fame with Robert LeeColeman @ Locos Local Bluesman Robert Lee Coleman was anoriginal guitarist for James Brown and hisJB’s. He still has that soul in his wrist, butcan wail the blues too. Until the end of1972, Coleman toured & recorded withBrown. He can be heard on three ofBrown's albums:"Hot Pants", on whichColeman was solely responsible for the gui-tar groove on the title track; "Revolution ofthe Mind", recorded live at the ApolloTheater in NYC; & the song 'Make It Funky'from the "Soul Classics" LP. And makin’ itfunky is what Coleman still does.

Saturday, Dec 19Country Music Legend CHARLIELOUVIN @ The HummingbirdThe term "living legend" gets thrownaround quite a bit, but it actually applies toCountry Music Hall of Famer CharlieLouvin. The magical harmonies and depthof feeling found on Louvin Brothers record-ings of the 50's and 60's inspired a newgeneration of musicians, firmly establishingthe Louvins' stature as one of the most influ-ential duos in country music history. In2006, the Tompkins Square label reachedout to Charlie about making his first newstudio album in over ten years. Guests onthe album include Elvis Costello, GeorgeJones, Jeff Tweedy, Tom T. Hall, Bright Eyes, and more. This is big time for Macon.

DECEMBER 10 - 28,200916 - 11thHourOnline.com

Influences? This is a style that I learnedfrom many of the blues greats, such as deltabluesmen Robert Johnson and MuddyWaters, as well as Hill Country Blues artistslike R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough, not to mention countless others, such as thedistinctive slide sound of Mississippi FredMcDowell, and the tribal rhythms of BoDiddly. Bluegrass and country have also had astrong influence on me, with their fast finger-picking styles. As a teenager, I was really intohard rock, metal, and punk rock, and those ele-ments definitely surface in my music, some-times giving it an edge, and sometimes takingover entirely. At shows, I play a variety of gen-res, I mean, who only wants to do one thing?…not me, obviously. I want to do lots ofthings, some of them all-at-once.

Describe Your Sound? “Outlaw countrymeets juke joint trance” because I do a lot ofstory songs and murder ballads, as well asquite a bit of trance blues. Lately my musichas taken more of a riff rock route, though,…kind of like some hillbilly Black Sabbath.

What got you into music? I come from amusical family, and I have loved playingmusic, since I was a child. As I got into my30’s, I began to realize that most of the musicthat I really connected with, all had that samedriving beat, …that foot-stomping on the

porch kind of feel, and when I inherited a setof drums, I started working with the kick drumand hi-hat while playing guitar, and voila, a lit-tle baby one-man-band was born!

What do you enjoy about Middle GA’smusic scene? I enjoy living in, and playingin Middle Georgia because there is such arich musical heritage around here, andMacon is one of my favorite places to play inthe entire Southeast. The people are usuallysuper nice, and the downtown area has suchcharacter. There is a very diverse population, and on a first Friday, you will see every typeof person imaginable, mingling togetherdowntown. I have written and recorded acouple dozen songs in Milledgeville, where Icurrently reside, so I have definitely foundplenty of creative inspiration around here. Iwrote and recorded my last cd “VoodooPanther” here, and I am recording a new onethis winter. I have a home studio, where I doall my own recording, and I have my ownrecord label, so I am 100% DIY.

What would you like to see? Some kind of bus system that would bringpeople from outlying towns into Macon forthe weekend. There are plenty of peoplewho would like to come, but for those whodrink, getting home is a problem, and nobodywants drunk drivers on the road!

100% DIY, from his one-man band to home recording

MUSIC highlighting middle georgia’s local talent

Mississippi John Doudeperforms as a one-man-band, playing drums with his feet, guitar with his hands, and singing, talking, and playingharmonica with his mouth. His style of finger-pickingenables him to play bass, and rythym or lead simultane-ously, so the guitar is usually doing 2 parts at once.

the leftLocal Liberal, “Mama Karma” takes on the issues plagueingthe southeast and the world, one column at a [email protected]

“The Reverend Wiley Drake of

Buena Vista, CA has been prayingfor President Obama's death and

encouraging others to do likewise, citingPsalm 109 (“may his days be few... mayhis children be fatherless,,,,”). You canfind the bumper stickers and t-shirtsonline. In Drake's mind, Jesus is notonly anti-Obama; he's also waiting forenough intercessory prayer to get theword from the Godfather (literally!) toactually whack the president. Someyears, Jesus is the Prince of Peace; thisseason, he's a Hit Man.

Personally, I think that God shouldconsider suing these weirdos fordefamation of character.

The baby Jesus keeps morphing intosomething whiter and more right-wingevery Christmas season. I mean, if thetypical fundamentalist Christian reflectsthe current social values of Christ, thenthe Lord is heading into some AngryWhite Man territory. I fully expect to seea little manger scene featuring the WiseMen offering the holy family a differenttype of gift-giving: an AK-47, the videogame Call of Duty, and an autographedcopy of Going Rogue. Little J.C. isbecoming less an historical figure fromthe Middle East and something of aparamilitary Buddy Christ for theHummer set.

Hitler believed that Jesus was ofCeltic ancestry and not a Jew at all. Thenotion is absurd, but I am amazed athow many church members make casualanti-Semitic remarks. If you talk smackabout Jews and the Middle East, aren'tyou sort of hating on your own Savior?

Why do folks love to remake theLord into their own image? Are religiouspeople just trying to keep God relevantfor their generation, or is it simply massnarcissism? I spent the seventies wor-shiping the sensitive Hippie Jesus withhis dreamy surfer looks. A generationbefore me had a rugged blue-eyed Jesusa la films such as King of Kings. Mydaughters' generation has seen the rise ofChristian mosh pits as Christ gets amakeover as the ultimate punk or thequintessential emo kid – maybe some-one will soon market Jesus: the TwilightEdition. But recent years have broughtus a camo-clad Savior who can't wait forthe Final Battle.

I am not particularly fond of what Iwill call Apocalypto-Jesus who is aboutto open a can of whoop-ass on the plan-et. This years' model of the Lord fea-tures a heavily-edited transcript of hiswords: no more call to “turn the othercheek”, no more meek inheriting theearth. He's hired a ghost writer to minethe internet for some Ayn Rand words

about the value of greed. He's been seenhanging with those temple moneychangers. Jesus has found a mondo jarof Sammy Sosa skin-bleaching cream.Jesus is no longer a dark-skinned MiddleEasterner.

Apocalypto-Jesus must love guns, because bumpers filled with pro-gun slo-gans sure tend to sit alongside ofChristian fish emblems. Jesus particular-ly loves the second amendment to theConstitution because He guided everystroke of the pen held by the foundingfathers, even the ones who held slavesand massacred Native Americans anddrank like gutter punks on penny Pabstnight. They were all just God's secre-taries, and the United States of Americais certainly ordained by God to be atheocracy.

Well, I'm here to say that Jesus was-n't born in a red state. Mass hysteria andhogwash and twisting of the Bible intosome overarching form of uber-patriot-ism needs to stop. I can't find the scrip-ture which states that the U.S. is thePromised Land, or that the doctrine ofManifest Destiny was ever part of God'sPlan. I fail to understand why miningand excavation of everything beautifuland valuable within the environment isany form of godly stewardship. Frankly, the constant use of God's name to justifythe horrors of any government is sicken-ing. Governments do good things andstupid things and always have. God isn'ta Democrat, a Republican, or a free-market capitalist.

There's still the lovely, humblestory of the Nativity which isn't aboutpolitics or fistfights in the Wal-Martelectronics department. A laboringwoman who gives birth in a mangerand the ensuing adventures of growingup as Jesus in Bethlehem doesn'trequire the overlay of gloss and China-made plastics. We don't need to turnthe simplicity of the story into a call toarms against businesses who fail to say“Merry Christmas” to every customer.Let's just respect our differences andtry to get along.

Apocalypto-Jesus needs to take along winter's nap. If you want to prayfor the President, make it a real prayerfor guidance. For eight years I had tohold my nose and hope that formerpresident George Bush would make adecision about something that I couldagree with. I could hate his choices, but it is too much weight to truly hatea person. I suggest that my brothersand sisters on the other side of thepolitical fence consider this and, thisseason, remember the one called thePrince of Peace.

They Still PreyPraying for Obama? More like preying on Obama.

and the rightConservative commentator Bill Knowles, a resident of BibbCounty, spurs debate about local, state and national politics

I recently had the opportunity to inteview a 27-year old named Brianabout his new organization called Can-Do Conservatives. Brian wasborn with a malady of defects he calls “blessings.”

Brian Donegan could very easily sit inhis Lawrenceville, Georgia home andcomplain about his life and what is

happening in the world around him. Brian isa 27 year-old who was born with a host ofmaladies that include being legally blind,Cerebral Palsy, a bilateral cleft lip andpalette, no sense of smell and many otherdefects that he calls “blessings”. But Brianis not that type of man. Instead, Brian haschosen to do something about things by try-ing to make a difference in our country, inparticular, for handicapped individuals whocall themselves Conservatives.

I recently had the opportunity to inte-view Brian about his new organization calledCan-Do Conservatives.

When was Can-Do Conservatives started?Nine months ago it started as a dream in myhead (It just recently became registered as alegal 527 political organization). It was rightafter the contest for RNC Chair. I was highlydisappointed. Not as much in our choice butthat none of the candidates were interested inreaching out to the disabled in their plans formoving forward as a party. I am sick andtired of being championed by liberalDemocrats who just want to use us as pawnson a political chess board with entitlementprograms that tie us down to the Governmentball-and-chain. Republicans have done avery poor job of reaching out to the disabled. We need to get back to the Reagan model ofbuilding coalitions by standing firm on ourConservative values and principles, but aim-ing the message in the right directions andcommunicating our positions well.

What is the primary goal of Can-DoConservatives? To give a voice to the leastrepresented group of people inConservatism, the disabled. I attended myfirst Georgia Republican Convention inSavannah this past May. I watched as manydifferent groups were represented , but no onespoke on behalf of the disabled. Also, I justattended Michelle Bachman's "EmergencyHouse Call" on the west side of the USCapital a few weeks ago. One one speaker,Chris Smith (R-NJ) mentioned the fact thatthe disabled will be adversely affected by thehealthcare bill Pelosi and Co. are trying toram down our throats. There is definitely along way to go, but it is a fight worth takingon.

Who has been your favorite politician todeal with? By far, that would be GovernorMike Huckabee. He is the nicest person Ihave ever met. A close second would be can-didate for Insurance Commissioner GerryPurcell. There are many others in close prox-imity like Gubernatorial candidates JohnOxendine (Georgia) and Bob Vander Plaats(Iowa), Iowa Congressional Candidate, SteveRathje (IA-2), I can't name everyone or you

would run out of space for your column! Most politicians I have met over the pastyear in my travels have been very nice andsupportive.

Who is your personal inspiration?I have always been interested in politics, eversince I was very young. However no oneinspired and motivated me to get off the politi-cal sidelines before Governor Huckabee'sPresidential campaign. When I discovered himI was at a crossroads in my life. I needed somedirection and a boost of confidence. I found itas I volunteered for Governor Huckabee'scampaign and left my comfort zone doingthings I never even considered doing before. The Can-Do Conservatives of America is myprogression in political activism.

What do you feel is our nation's numberone concern going into the new year? "It'sThe Economy, Stupid!" Many of our prob-lems in the country right now stem from oureconomic woes. Unfortunately during a timeof economic downturn and a time when ourdebt is running sky high because we arethrowing money down a rat hole, the solu-tions for Washington is to increase the debteven further by socializing health care andhanding out ridiculous bailouts. Our dollar isgetting weaker by the day, unemployment isgrowing fast, and the threat of more taxation, regulation, and litigation is stunting thegrowth of small businesses. It's also leading tojob migration and we should be working oncreating more jobs, not driving them overseas! The disabled are more likely to start smallbusinesses and we should be promoting theentrepreneurial spirit, not killing it!

What direction do you feel our country isheading? Things are going downhill fast! Inthe past year we have become a nation ofclunker cars, bailout czars, and a runawaydebt going way too far. To be fair, thingsweren't exactly going in the right directionunder the previous administration but thingshave been deteriorating rapidly underPresident Obama's watch. We can either doone of two things. We can sit and watch orwe can stand up and fight. I am going tostand up and fight!

In the tradition of Walt Whitman (Class of 1855),this New Year’s Eve we are going to celebrateourselves and sing ourselves. The we is us, the

people who’ve huddled around The 11th Hour for thelast few years, looking for something to do, the peo-ple who’ve come to love Random Family music, itsfriends and the bands in the scene. There will beother parties and probably a few good ones, butnone that are just for us, the students and alumni ofRock n Roll High School.

This is our Class Reunion… from the Future! We love our great past—Otis Redding (Class of 1963), LittleRichard (1955), Allman Brothers (1971)—and our chart-topping present—YoungJeezy (2005) and Jason Aldean (2005)—but this is about our future. Since we aren’tthere yet, we’re gonna fake it till we make it.

Do what? You decide what year class reunion this is for you and come as thatversion of yourself: who you will be in 10, 15, 20 years. Maybe you’ll finally changeyour name to Duo Maxwell and become a world class DJ in 10 years, so come asthat. Or whatever. You can, as Nirvana (Class of 1991) sang, come as you are, butwe like it when you wear your insides on the outside. If you want, dress up like yourclique or crew from high school: jocks, nerds, smokers, greasers, hippies, preps, cheerleaders, art house, etc. Like Walt would’ve said, we contain multitudes. Theidea here is to show that off and have some fun.

What kind of fun? Well, you can’t be Duo Maxwell (Class of 2010) because he’sour special guest DJ who’ll be spinning (in a Mexican wrestling mask) for the firsttime in the Mactropolis alongside our favorite jam master, Montalban Jr. And ofcourse, you can expect to see the likes of Floco Torres, Citizen Insane, Al K!NG,City Council and some other Random Family members and friends, but be aware,THIS IS NOT A CONCERT.

It’s an event with music, great live music. Don’t know how to describe for youthe weirdness that we’ve been cooking up, but it’s going to be something you’ll talkabout later. Much later. In the days after you’ve not only recovered but cobbledtogether words to describe it.

And we’ll have yearbooks! We’re only going to make 100 or so of these things, and they’ll be ready by the 11th Hour Readers Choice Awards. Come to the ClassReunion to get your picture in the yearbook, or email a headshot and your name, grade and bio to [email protected]. We’ll put them in the year-book with pictures gathered from all the crazy, weird, fun and memorable eventsfrom the past year. If you have some to send or an event you want in, hit us up. Ifyou and your crew want to take your picture together and be The Glee Club, that’scool. Be creative. This is yours, ya know? And you can get a copy of it for just $15.

What if your favorite local shop closed its doors tomorrow? It’s hardlynews to anyone that all businesses, but particularly small businesses, have seen tough times of late, but now there’s a way you can help.

The 3/50 Project is a national initiative designed to encourage consumersto shop local and save the local shops that are the backbone of our economy. Theidea is simple: pick three locally-owned businesses and spend $50 between themeach month. If half of the U.S. population followed this formula, their purchaseswould generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue, according to stats from theU.S. Department of Labor.

The importance of shopping local lies in supporting our neighbors andtheir shops, but the results can also be seen in many other ways. For every $100spent in a local shop, $68 returns to the local economy through taxes, payroll andother expenditures like supplies. Compare that to the $43 that stays with the localeconomy from national chain purchases. It may cost a little more to get that item ata local shop, but that extra money, through taxes and the services they fund, maygo to fill in the pothole that you hit every day on the way to work.

But the 3/50 Project isn’t an “all-or-nothing” concept. The idea isn’t tocompletely stay away from big-box stores and national chains, but just to spendsome of that money at local shops. Organizers stress balance in shopping, andsome national chains are even supporting the project, knowing that a successfuleconomy needs both.

It's time Macon got the word out about this initiative. Chris Abbott, withJack and Coat Clothiers in downtown Macon, knows it's not easy to be an inde-pendent business in this economy.“We can appreciate any effort for the commu-nity to get out and support locally owned businesses, it's important we all doanything we can.”

“The unique, local shops are the ones that really give a town its characterand personality. My business is about as local as it gets”, says Kevin Meadowsowner of Meadows Fine Jewelry, “as I make most of the things in the store.”Healso noted that employees in small shops are typically more knowledgeableabout the products they sell, and more able to give advice when a customer isn’tsure what he or she wants.

3/50 is trying to change the mindset of the general public. It's time to getthe word out that Wal-Mart shouldn’t be your one-stop shop.

Part ThreeOnce the husband hits a high rank andsupervisory status, the wife is expectedto take on a new identity. The perfectmilitary wife will make it look effort-less and not complain in public.

It was once described to me as,“having his rank embroidered onher panties”—when the leader-

ship’s wife is accused of wearing herhusband’s rank. In the military, anestablished and respected chain ofcommand results in a well-runsquadron. At the top, there is the bosswith his spouse. From there, the jobtrickles from his shoulder boards allthe way down to her panties getting ina wad.

I like to call it the “two-fer” deal. For example, once a woman’s husbandbecomes a squadron commander, sheshould plan on being the “womanbehind the man”--to dutifully supporthim and his squadron. The militarymember’s career absorbs the wholefamily into a lifestyle. It is preferred tohave the lead couple seen as a solid, functional unit. Observing the com-mander have a happy, sustainable fam-ily reflects stability. Stability is cravedin times of stress and war. But, whatif the wife is shy, only wants to takecare of her children, has a career ofher own, or a combination of all ofthat? Often, the answer would be,“Too damn bad. Deal, lady.”

While the man is running thebusiness of the squadron, the wife isrunning the social end of things. Bydefault, she is in charge of heading thespouses’ monthly coffees, perhapspublishing a newsletter, and evenrustling up a fundraiser. Heck, she

may need to hostess the children’sChristmas party, too. Don’t forget thatshe should attend the base’s officialspouses’ club; warm a seat at thosefunctions. Never mind that the officialbase club needs her to take a seat onthe board.

In fact, she may have to organizea theme party for one of the year’sofficial spousal club meetings. Whileshe is selling chili dogs to help pay forthe children’s Christmas party, sheneeds to remember to call the spousesof the deployed and check on theirwellbeing. Oh, and tell her to not for-get to take care of whatever she usedto do before her husband was namedthe commander.

The buy-one-get-one (BOGO),the two-fer, is assumed. He receivesthe paycheck and she tries to seam-lessly double her family’s supportiveefforts at the workplace.

A commander spouse friend ofmine once said, “The only way to getout of all that is to get a job, get sick,or have a baby.”

Those are the top three salableexcuses. However, they are onlyexcused temporarily until it can all getjuggled. And she will get it handled. She has to.

Military spouses need each other.Someone has to be the leader. Theeasy out is to hang it on the comman-der’s wife. Sometimes a woman maytake on her title like a bad pageantqueen: show-off, go out of bounds, and boss people around. But, those arethe jerks and the exceptions. Behind astrong military husband, is an evenstronger (and more tired) militarywife. *Typically, if the commander is afemale, the husband gets a free pass.

Journalist Karen Jones delves into the idiosyncrasy thatcomes along with being a military wife.www.JonesToTheGrindstone.com

Christmas Story: Boise boy lickspole, gets stuckBOISE, Idaho – It's become an annual winter tale:A young boy gets histongue stuck to a metal pole, perhaps as the result of a dare. This year, the scene straight out of the movie "A Christmas Story" unfoldedTuesday morning in Boise with a boy of about 10. Boise firefightersused a glass of warm water to free the unidentified boy from the metalfence pole.

Fire Capt. Bill Tinsley says the boy's tongue was bleeding a little, but he was OK and allowed to continue walking to school. Firefightersestimate the boy was 10 years old. Dear Santa,I stopped believing in you when Iwas really young . My cousin (yes,THAT cousin) found all her Xmaswishes stuffed in her Mom andDad’s closet. Still I hedged my bets,by writing you a letter every year.Sometimes I get what I want, some-times I get that burgundy v necksweater from Banana Republic thatmy mom’s been trying to get me towear for three decades. Here is mylist for 2009. IT’s been a rough year.

- The Rise of TheodoreRoosevelt TheodoreRoosevelt’s life is aninstruction manual onmanliness. In EdmundMorris’ book, The Riseof Theodore Roosevelt,

we see TR overcome adversity afteradversity in order to become a paragonof manliness. Read about TR kickinghis childhood sickness’s butt and thenheading out West to become a rancherin the Dakotas.

- Stripper Breath Candles- I’vealways been a big fan of the candle. Ilike the light they throw off, I lovehow I look in candlelight but I’vealways hated the housewife glad airfreshener connotations that come withthem. Finally, this candle for men canbe purchased at etsy.com (don’t get mestarted). They basically cut 22 oz beerbottles in half, fill them up with waxthat (if you cut yourself, stop whining, you’re a man) smells like amber orconstruction sites. I’ll take two.

- Pocket Compass. As a manwho spends a great deal of timeoutdoors, could I have a nicepocket compass so I’ll never losemy way. Sure, GPS may be easierand more accurate, but batteriesdie and satellite connections canbe disrupted. That’s when havinga compass comes in handy.

- Moleskins are for pussies. Give mesome Field Notes. While on the road,a man needs something on which to

write down their observations andexperiences. A journal can be too bigand the back of napkins are just toosmall. Enter Field Notes. Inspired byvintage agricultural memo books, these3.5 inch by 5.5 inch notebooks arelarge enough to capture all yourthoughts but small enough to keep inyour back pocket.

- A bag from Saddleback LeatherCompany. If you’re looking for a

leather manbag or suitcase, there’s no bet-ter place to buyone than theSaddlebackLeather com-pany.Exquisitelybuilt to last,

these babies carry a 100 year warranty. It’s a bag your descendants will fightover when your dead.

ALBUMSnew releases: by David Higdon

RaekwonOnly Built 4 Cuban Linx, Pt IIReleased September 8, 2009

Wu-Tang’s most cele-brated chef has beenstirring the pot of beatsover his spitfire delivery, and he’s ready toserve. Part I may beone of the best rapalbums of the ‘90s, and arguably the bestfrom any of the Wu’s many solo projects. Why it has taken the Chef 14 years of stut-tered starts to match that recipe, I don’tknow, but this album comes close to theoriginal’s impact. Ghostface Killah is pres-ent throughout, but the guest MCs don’tstop there. Method Man, Popa Wu, andeven the coach himself, Slick Rick are allon hand to deliver. Wu-Tang fo Life!

Super 400Sweet FistReleased September15, 2009

Sweet 400 is straightup, dirty rock bandfun. For those in the southeast, wehaven’t been graced too often by theirtour stops, but their albums make onelong for a good live charge. The powertrio plays a garage rock combo of late60s era Black Sabbath and The Creationwith the modern southern gothic of Kingsof Leon. “Needle Down” and “AnotherHeavy Word” will give you a good idea.

To solve the Sudoku puzzle, each row, column andbox must contain the numbers 1 to 9.

GOOD LUCK!

ASTROLOGYARIES (March 21-April 19):You will say things without thinking. You can be arrogant, presumptuous, and your own interests will come first.

You are spending money on something practicalwith which to surprise someone. Look around youfor better prices since you want to consider thisitem as an investment. You may want to try aweekend getaway as you are starting to feel rest-less but being as busy as you are, you know it ishopeless. A vacation much later could be planned.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You arepractical, peace loving, stubborn, anddeliberate. Taurus has a natural interestin money, and you like the finer things

in life. This is an extremely busy week so youmust begin immediately. Do not let things do notpile up. Plan a little of your time to rest andrelax so you do not overdo. Perhaps you can del-egate some of the work to others. You trust. Bevery careful on the road as everyone is in a hurrybut not alert to their driving. Look for bargainsso you do not overspend.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Geminiis versatile, fickle, intelligent, creative, quick, neat, and curious. Geminilearns quickly and has the ability to

get a good education. About half a dozen times ayear you get restless feet and want some type ofchange. This week is one of those times.Sometimes you act on it and sometimes you donot. This is not really a good time for change.Someone needs to talk with you about theirstruggle with finances and they have a very fineand logical sounding argument to present.Beware! Do not fall for it.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Cancer is sentimental, sensitive, andneeds to have a sense of security.

Cancer is intensely romantic and has a vivid imagi-nation. Listen carefully to what others have to say. They have something important to tell you. You winall debates or arguments that come up this week. Becareful how you spend your money as you couldeasily be overcharged. Look around for bargains andbe very practical and objective if possible. A busyweekend is coming up, so be prepared.

LEO (July 23-August 22): Leo is col-orful, self assured, outgoing, impulsiveand expansive. If are running into trou-ble, it may seem to be too much for you

to handle by yourself. Others are willing to help ifyou let them know what is needed. A piece of realestate suddenly needs some money spent. It isquite easy to overspend so get some estimatesbefore you commit yourself. You have manyerrands to run this week so be careful driving.

VIRGO (August 23-Sept 22): You canbe highly critical, sarcastic, & unfor-giving. If you look for it, there is a won-derful opportunity out there somewhere

for you. It will mean very hard work, serious thoughtand perhaps putting in some overtime but if you paceyourself, you would do fine. This could reinvent andrevitalize your whole work ethic. By the end of thisweek you should discover exactly what it is. The bestof luck to you.

LIBRA (Sept 23-Oct 22): Libra isartistic, musical, level headed, sympa-thetic, and generous. You can be gossipy,

critical, and bitter. You can be very intuitive thisweek so you should be sure to follow some ofthose wild and “off the wall” hunches. This is atime of prosperity for you. Any artistic talent youhave should come out during this period and bringyou a great deal of satisfaction. You can be verycharming (as usual) and attract people to you withyour keen magnetism.

SCORPIO (October 23-Nov 21): You are very intense, strong willed, determined and secretive. You can be

willful and sarcastic, but a deep thinker with a finemind. Now that you have thought everythingthrough, it is time to come out with your new plans. Not everyone will be pleased with your decisionsonce you have explained them. You have only onemore week or so to go before you finally decide youcan not keep spending your money foolishly.Impulse shopping will finally come to an end justbefore the “money tree” dies.

SAGITARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Sagittarius is warm and friendly. You liketo talk a great deal making it difficult for

others to get a word in edgewise. This is an excellentmonth to reorganize everything. This is a time forbuilding a new profile. Any good Karma you havestored up in the past is repaid to you within the nexttwo weeks. This is when you should be buildingtoward your future as slow and steady progress canhappen. Follow your hunches this week.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19):Capricorn is very often politicallyminded. Capricorn is also patient,

reserved, cautious, faithful and shrewd. If you aregiving a lecture or presentation of some type thisweek, it goes very well and everyone actually listensto you. You have some interesting ideas and you willshare them. A vacation with friends could be madeat this time for a trip somewhat later in the year. Thenext four months should be your time for earningsome good money.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Independence and a feeling of freedomis necessary. Aquarius has a strong will,

and is original, inventive, and will always enjoydoing the unexpected. You may need to follow yourhunches or intuition to avoid running into troublethis week. Someone is always exaggerating andcausing problems at your work place. False gossip isgoing around so do not get caught up in it or youcould be blamed. Aggressive drivers are on the roadnow so you will need to pay attention when out.

PISCES (Feb 19-March 20):You are emotional, ultra-sensitive, easygoing, and sociable, Worry plagues

you. Pisces will see only the good in others. Youhave much to do this week but if you ask, friendsare more than willing to help you. Try to delegatesome of the chores so you are not over tired by theend of the week. It is very easy to go overboardnow so pace yourself at a much slower rate. Listencarefully to others since they have some very goodideas or advice for you. Be careful on the roadnow and practice defensive driving.
