ALL HALLOW'S EVE
Everybody knows the secu-
lar holiday of Halloween.
But not everybody knows
that it derives from a Holy
Day of obligation, All
Saints' Day on Nov. 1st.
The root word of Halloween - ''hallow'' - means ''holy.''
The suffix "een" is an abbreviation of "evening." It
refers to the Eve of All Hallows, the night before the
Christian Holy Day that honors saintly people. The
Church celebrates holy men and women throughout the
year on various saints' days.
The Solemnity of All Saints is when the Church honors
every saint: those officially known and honored on the
Church calendar, and saints known "only to God" in
their humility of their service in remote places around
the world unknown to most. This concept is similar to
the American holidays of Veterans Day or Presidents
Day, on which a group of people is honored. A more
familiar parallel is the Tomb/monument of the Un-
known Soldiers dedicated to deceased U.S. service
members whose remains have not been identified.
While we have information about many saints, and we
honor them on specific days, there are many unknown
or unsung saints, who may have been forgotten, or
never been explicitly honored. On All Saints Day, we
celebrate these holy individuals and ask for their pray-
ers and intercessions.
On the other hand, the origins of "dark Halloween ritu-
als" are Celtic in tradition and have to do with observ-
ing the end of summer sacrifices to gods in Druidic
tradition. Most of our Halloween practices can be
traced back to these old pagans (dark) rites and super-
stitions. Unfortunately, in today's Western culture, it is
"nearly impossible to avoid Halloween" due to so
much consumerism and retail spending.
If you have decided to allow your children to dress up,
wear more "innocent" costumes of pumpkins, princess-
es, angels, saints, etc.
Finally, know that there is a spiritual world filled with
goodness from God and evil from Satan (Ephesians 2:1
-10); life with Christ has power over darkness (1 John
4:4). We are children of light, therefore may every
decoration or any costume resembles the Kingdom of
Heaven but not "darkness."

Membership Drive for Knights of Columbus
November 2nd & 3rd
We will be signing up men of the parish to co-ordinate
helping in the parish and assisting with the needs in
our community. It is an easy way to help. As a member
of the knights, all work is voluntary, so you can pick
and choose to help where you can help best. You will get
to meet your fellow parishioners and develop friendships
and fraternity. It is what being Catholic is all about!

In service to One, in service to all
Thank you From The Director of
Homeless Services
The one constant I have as a homeless outreach
worker for Our Father's House is knowing that every
camp I go to I have something tangible to offer a
backpack loaded with gear specially designed for their
needs. The backpacks donated by the people of St. Denis
parish have been more than just a bag with stuff in it,
they have saved lives.
It’s obvious that every item has been chosen with care
and consideration for the people in need: a warm
sweatshirt, new socks, a toothbrush and deodorant, a
granola bar or crackers and tuna.
All things that you or I might take for granted, but for
those less fortunate, this bag is often the only gift they
have received that doesn’t come with expectations. I gave
our last three backpacks out just this week. Two in the
same day, to a couple who were staying outside, under a
bridge. Since this engagement, they both accepted the
offer of a shelter bed and still use the backpacks for the
daily travel.
The other bag was given to a disabled man I have been
trying for a while to build a relationship with. The
backpack sealed the deal and he too accepted shelter.
