Thanksgiving & Advent, Worship at Skaalen
You are warmly invited to join us for our traditional Thanksgiving Eve Worship Service in the Skaalen Chapel. This service will be on Wednesday, November 21st, at 4:00 p.m. Please come and join us!
This year, the Advent Season begins in the first week of December. Each year we host special Advent Communion Services that are led by local pastors for the members of their congregation who now live at Skaalen. These services will be on December 4th, 5th, and 6th. Watch your church bulletins for more information about the day and time for your congregation.
All of these services will be in the Skaalen Chapel; all residents, families, staff, and community members are welcome.

Pastoral Perspectives
James S. Koza, Chaplain
Dr. Albert Einstein, the great American physicist, was once traveling on a train from where he taught at Princeton University. Soon came the conductor, walking down the aisle, punching the tickets of each passenger. When he came to Einstein, the famous researcher reached into his vest, but he could not find his ticket. So he reached into his trouser pockets, and it wasn’t there either. Then he looked all through his briefcase, but still could not find it. The professor, known for his absent-minded tendencies, looked in the seat beside him, but still no ticket. The conductor said, “Dr. Einstein, I know who you are. We all know who you are. I am sure you bought a ticket. Don’t worry about it. You’re okay.” Einstein nodded appreciatively, and the conductor continued down the aisle punching tickets. As he was ready to move to the next car, the conductor turned around and saw the great physicist down on his hands and knees, looking under the seat for the ticket. The conductor rushed back and said, “Dr. Einstein, Dr. Einstein, there is not a problem. You don’t need to find the ticket; I am sure you bought one. Don’t worry, I know who you are.” Einstein looked at him and said, “Young man, I too know who I am, but I need to find and examine the ticket, because I don’t know where I am going.”

In life, we need to ask two questions: “Who am I?” and “Where am I going?” Within Psalm 100, these two questions are directly answered. The writer’s insight into the first identity question is this: “Know that the LORD is God! It is he that made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.” Who are we? We are God’s people! And to the question about destination and purpose in life, the psalmist writes, “Serve the Lord with gladness.” Where are we going? We are going out into the world to serve; we must serve God, and others, not just ourselves. We are God’s people; we are God’s servants. This is our identity; this is our destination. May our Lord richly bless your journey of faith.
Happy Thanksgiving
Profiles in Caring Julie Kelling, Certified Nursing Assistant, began her career at Skaalen on September 6, 2006 as a Housekeeper. In 2010 Julie transferred to the Nursing Department as a CNA and for the last two years she has also worked as a Med Tech. Julie and her husband Darryl have been married for five years. Julie’s favorite leisure time activities include hunting, fishing, riding her motorcycle, reading a good book and watching movies. We asked Julie if she has a treasured memory of a resident. Julie shared two of her favorite memories with us. Julie recalls when one of her residents called her his “Schatz”. This means sweetheart in German and Swiss. Another treasured time is when her residents tell her that they missed her when she was on vacation and when they tell her, “You can never go on vacation again!” We also asked Julie if there was a person (or persons) who influenced her decision to pursue a career in long term care. Julie replied that yes, her Grandmother who was a nurse and her Mother who is also a CNA. Thank you Julie, for your dedication to your residents and to Skaalen!
