ST PETER’S ANGLICAN PRIMARY SCHOOL FAIR – SATURDAY 8 SEPTEMBER 2012

Members of the Broughton community are invited to attend the St Peter’s Spring Fair next Saturday, commencing at 9 am for another day of fellowship and fun. The special guest at the Fair will be Miss Bongi, a teacher from Intumbane School in South Africa, St Peter’s sister school. Many of the Broughton students who attended St Peter’s Primary School would remember Miss Bongi with a great deal of affection.

STAFF NEWS

Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Strong on the birth of their new son, Luke James, who arrived safely at 3.55 am on 28 August. Luke weighed 2.95kg and is a little brother for Katelyn.

Congratulations to Miss Beshay (English) on her engagement to Andrew Beshara last Saturday. We all congratulate the happy couple and will keep them in our prayers as they begin planning for their wedding.

Mrs Binskin (Head of Mathematics) will be on Long Service Leave during Term 4 this year. She will be commencing her break accompanying her son, Lachlan, to South Africa as he represents Australia in the Australian Under 14’s Indoor Cricket Team. Mrs Jones and Mrs Noakes will be sharing the role of Head of Mathematics whilst Mrs Binskin is on leave and Mrs Rose Nockles will be joining the Maths Faculty for the term. The College is very fortunate to have Mrs Nockles, known to many as Ms Burrows, to cover Mrs Binskin’s leave as she was a member of the Broughton staff from 1991 to 2010 in various roles including Head of Science and Year Patron.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS

JUNIOR SCHOOL HICES DEBATING TEAM

Well done to our Junior School HICES Debating Team for their performance in the semi-final against Nowra Anglican College! The team gave a good affirmative argument on a difficult topic that ‘Supermarket prices should be set by Governments‘. The adjudicators took over a quarter an hour of careful consideration to determine that Nowra Anglican College would move forward to the State Final. I commend Lachlan Bower, Sarah Russell, Jana Massingham and Caitlin Dillon for their outstanding performance in this competition.

JUNIOR SCHOOL IPSSO SUCCESS

Congratulations to the Junior School on the manner they represented the College during the Winter IPSSO Season, which was held over Terms 2 and 3. You have been wonderful ambassadors for the school.

All teams performed well in their various competitions with six of the eight teams making the semi-finals, five making the finals and our Junior and Senior Netball Teams, as well as the Senior AFL Team, being successful as the IPSSO champions for 2012. Further details of the success of the teams will be found in the Junior section of this newsletter.

Well done to all of the staff and students involved in IPSSO Sport!

MISA PUBLIC SPEAKING

On Wednesday, Year 10 students, Markus Gruening and Amy McCann attended a MISA Public Speaking Day at Wollondilly Anglican College. Miss Russell, their English teacher, accompanied them. They were required to prepare an eight minute speech and then deliver a three minute impromptu to an audience of other Year 10 students and their teachers.

Both students excelled in their prepared speeches and are to be congratulated. Markus, the master of the impromptu, came second overall. A special commendation to him!

MWLP WORKPLACE STUDENT OF THE YEAR

LAURA PENNINGTON

Congratulations to Laura Pennington who has been selected as one of three Finalists for the 2012 Hospitality Work Placement Student of the Year Award!

Laura has been selected as a result of her Host Employer, Jamaica Blue at Macarthur Square, nominating her for the Honour Roll at the end of her work placement. Over the past 12 months, MWLP has placed over 3,000 students into work placement in all VET frameworks. Only 127 students have been nominated by their host employers for being

outstanding whilst on work placement. From these, 33 Hospitality students were eligible for the award. MWLP staff members identified Laura as one of a shortlist of ten students and she was then selected as 1 of the 3 finalists by a panel of internal and external stakeholders. Laura has now attended the interview and the winner will be announced on a special visit in October to the cruise ship P&O Pacific Pearl.

This finalist nomination is an outstanding achievement for Laura and will lead to many further opportunities as she completes her HSC in the Hospitality industry and beyond.

YEAR 12 DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY – INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY SHOWCASE

Congratulations to the Year 12 DAT and IT-Timber classes on the quality of work presented at the showcase of their HSC major works on Monday evening.

Students in both classes had to determine the focus of their project, design, construct their product and present a portfolio showing their thinking, design process, investigations and evidence of construction.

The variety of pieces presented by the group was interesting and exciting with projects including a horse-float storage compartment, a domestic trash compactor, a tradesman’s tool and a Teenager Self Help Guide.

Students in both classes would like to thank Mr Margin, Mr Carmody and Mr Van der Schyff for the time they gave in the holidays, weekends and evenings to assist them in these projects.

LITERACY DAY

Congratulations to the students, staff and parents of the Junior School for the effort they made for the 2012 Book Parade as part of Literacy Day.

It was pleasing to see the knowledge many of our students had of the characters they were dressed up as and their ability to tell me about the stories and books they have read.

I also thank parents and grandparents who came into the classrooms to read one of their favourite books to the classes and to share their love of reading with our Junior School.

A Headmaster’s Week is never dull and gives me many enjoyable opportunities. This week, I was delighted to be able to celebrate Literacy Day by reading to Prep.

MATHS WEEK

The annual Broughton Maths Week took place during the week of 20 to 24 August. Excitement grew as the students competed in activities including the Year 7 Hexmathalon, the Year 11 Mathsgaine and the Year 9 Maths Relay. Year 10 demonstrated their design skills during the Paper Plane Fly-off and Year 12's Annual Circle Draw-off was fiercely contended. The "Spaghetti Towers" Competition produced some amazing creations. Thank you to all students who participated and made it such an enjoyable week.

Of course, the estimation activity involving the lolly jar was one activity not to be missed! Congratulations to this years' winner: Zibraan Shafiq

of Year 12.

PARENT AWARENESS FACEBOOK EVENING – WEDNESDAY 5 SEPTEMBER AT 7.15 PM

Parents of students in Years 5 to 12 are invited to join us for a Parent Information Evening. Senior Constable Rivers, Broughton’s Police Liaison Officer, will be the keynote speaker. His main focus will be the use of Facebook and other social media networks.

Date: Wednesday 5 September 2012

Time: 7.15 pm to approximately 9 pm

Venue: College Function Centre

Please contact the College to rsvp for the evening

[email protected]

Could I encourage parents of students from Years 5 to Year 12 to attend this evening as problems relating to the misuse of Facebook is a major issue in all schools? It is a concern that in a survey undertaken in Term 2, nearly 20% of students in Years 5 and 6 and 30% in Year 7 admitted to using Facebook. In the upper secondary years this figure is over 90%.

Whilst there are many positive uses of electronic social networks, parents need to be aware of the dangers and consequences that our young people are facing through this form of communication.

NOTICE OF WITHDRAWAL

Parents are reminded that it is a condition of enrolment that one term’s notice be given of the withdrawal of a student and that a term’s fee will be charged in lieu of the appropriate notice. This notice allows the College to plan for classes, staffing, activities and allocation of resources.

The requirement of the full term’s notice means that the College should be informed in writing of any student not returning for the 2013 academic year by the first day of Term 4, Monday 8 October 2012.

STAFF PROFILE

CHRIS NOAKES (PROPERTY MANAGER)

After completing Year 12, I served an apprenticeship in Fitting and Machining with Crompton Parkinson in Campbelltown, where I also gained experience in the Tool Room and Drawing Office. The CNC lathes in those days used punched tapes!

I completed a Certificate Course in Mechanical Engineering and commenced work in the family business at the conclusion of my apprenticeship. During my 22 years with SR Noakes & Sons, I gained qualifications as an Automotive Mechanic and completed a TAFE course in Welding. The business offered servicing on a great variety of machinery from ride-on mowers to

Page 5: HAPPY FATHER’S DAY · HAPPY FATHER’S DAY Fathers have a special role In each young child’s life ... Chinese New Year, International Women’s Day, Harmony Day, 2GB Open Broadcast

BROUGHTONNewsletter- 5

bulldozers, cars, farm machinery, and diesel trucks and also carried out a wide range of general engineering work. I also gained experience in mentoring many apprentices.

I commenced working as part of the Property Team at Broughton in 2003 as a Maintenance Person and was privileged to be appointed Property Manager when Tom Reeve retired earlier this year.

I am married to Debra (Mathematics teacher) and we have two adult children, both of whom are teachers: Peter (BAC Year 12 2002) is married to Bianca and Melissa (BAC Year 12 2005) is married to Anthony. I have worshipped at St Luke’s Anglican, The Oaks, for all of my 54 years! It is a joy to be a member of this small, Christ-centred church, where everyone feels welcomed as a valued family member. In this time, I have been involved in Men’s Ministries and served as a Parish Councillor, Warden and Treasurer. In my leisure time, I enjoy gardening and watching a variety of sports and Motorsports. I love meeting the challenge of adapting or repairing things and see myself as a “hands-on” person.

I give thanks for the Property Staff, Charlie, Jason and Daniel, they are a great team to work with and always put a 100% effort into whatever they are asked to do.

There are many highlights in my role at Broughton, especially enjoying the fellowship and companionship of Christian colleagues. It is a privilege to serve the staff and students each day – and nice to have the respect of the students. The care and wisdom shown by our Headmaster and the humour (and food!) in the TAS staffroom all contribute to making Broughton a great place to work.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL

What a fabulous day we had last Saturday for our Spring Fair. It was great to see so many families having fun. A huge thanks goes to the organisers and stall co-ordinators who spent many hours selling everything from showbags to fruit and veg. Well done to all of the students who performed in the music tent. It really was a wonderful community event.

My thanks also to the many parents and grandparents who volunteered their time on Tuesday to come and read to our students as part of Literacy Day. I know that several grandparents read stories to their grandchildren that they enjoyed reading to their own

children many years earlier! It was wonderful to see groups of children huddled around a book! Of course, the highlight of the day was the Parade of Champions hosted by the sensational Mrs Sheerman. The sports centre was decorated in true Olympic style and all classes paraded around the course showing off their amazing costumes. It was great to have so many parent spectators cheering them on.

In addition to these big events, a number of our children have also had the opportunity this past week to represent the College in various ways; including our incredibly talented HICES debating team who travelled to Bowral on Monday to compete in the semi-finals, our It’s Academic team who spent all day last Friday at Channel 7 studios competing in the popular quiz show, and our 6 successful IPSSO teams who played in the finals. What amazingly awesome students we have! Next Tuesday, many of our talented athletes will be competing at the NASSA carnival. We wish them well.

As mentioned in an earlier newsletter, this term our Primary grades are participating in a public speaking program. Over the next week all students in grades 3-6 will be presenting their speeches to their classes. The best speakers will then present to their grades. From here some students will be selected to deliver their speeches at the Public Speaking Competition which is being held on the evening of Monday, 17 September.

CHAPEL

The students really enjoyed having Mr Schroder share with us these past 3 weeks. Mrs Beckinsale will be leading Infants Chapel on Monday and we have a special visitor from South Africa leading Primary Chapel on Tuesday. Please join us as we learn more about mission.

Broughton’s Senior AFL team after posting a spectacular regular season, winning every match by 60 or more went into Wednesday’s finals with high expectations. The draw had us playing against Thomas Hassle Anglican College in the semi-final and despite a great deal of nervousness before the match our team ran out eventual winners by around 100 points and held the opposition to zero. At this point many of the spectators were thinking that they might be seeing a few future AFL stars for the Sydney Swans or the GWS Giants out on the pitch playing for Broughton! The final was not nearly as comfortable. Playing against Georges River Grammar school our AFL team found themselves in a position that they had not been in all year long, trailing at half time! Going into half time down by 2 (27-25) our boys and girls lifted and ran out eventual winners 66-32. A great season and one that we can all be proud of, they are a credit to the college.

Regarding Senior Soccer: What a season of awesome skill and action! Congratulations to the efforts of the team. We made it far into the competition based on hard work, team cooperation and good sportsmanship. Unfortunately, we didn't make it through to the Grand Finals but we triumphed in playing fairly and like a team. A special thanks goes to Mr Gowing, Mr and Mrs Schifino and Mr Egan for their coaching and support. Thanks to the parents who came to the games. Congratulations to all the boys with a special mention to Shannon Kell, Dylan Schifino and Joshua Battle (goalie) for their efforts this semester. Well done! Im very proud of you!

Mrs Gajda – Senior Soccer coach

Congratulations to the 5/6 Girls IPSSO Netball team. After a successful campaign throughout the season and going undefeated for its duration, the girls took out the title with impressive wins in both the Semi Final against William Carey, and the Grand Final against Thomas Hassall Anglican College. Mr Dunne was extremely proud of his team, and enjoyed coaching such a wonderful group of respectful, diligent and gifted players. All of the girls involved should take great pride in their achievements this season. The year 6 players will be sorely missed next year. Well done girls!

Mr Dunne – Senior Netball Coach

Throughout the season, the Junior Girls Netball team have delivered unbeatable performance accumulating in a triumphant grand final victory over Thomas Hassall Anglican College who were a formidable team. In the first half of the grand final, Thomas Hassall lead 6 – 3, then in the second half, with the coaching of Mrs Wootton and the VOCAL instruction and encouragement of Mr Kennedy, the girls refocused and bounced back with both teams

leading neck and neck; with only several minutes remaining our goal shooter and goal attacker, Rachel Pope and Savannah Abdow put the team in the lead by two points making the score 9-7 win to Broughton. A tremendous effort by all who played. Congratulations to Ashley Mead, Caitlin Terrett, Charley Wootton, Charlotte Dell, Jordyn Campbell, Kelsey O’Donnell, Olivia Pinder, Rachel Pope, Savannah Abdow, and Sienna Hart for their excellent performance on field and sportsmanship.

SPLASH DVDS

Orders are now being taken for the DVD and photo CD of the Musical “Splash”. All families should have received a blue note this week about ordering ‘Splash’ DVDs. Order forms need to be in by next week. If you have not received one, there are spare forms at the Junior School Office.

The DVD focused on the stage during the production. Due to low lighting on the Year 3 and 4 choirs, there are only shots of the students in the bows at the end of the show. The Infant performances were not filmed and parents were given the opportunity at the performances to film their child.

There is also a CD which contains photos of the cast.

The cost of the DVD only is $10. The cost of the DVD/CD together is $15.

Please indicate on the form which package you would like to purchase and the quantity. This will be billed to your College Account.

On Wednesday 22 August, 80 students from the College competed in the annual NASSA athletics carnival. God blessed our athletes with a wonderful day to participate in what was a well fought competition between the seven NASSA schools. Although we finished 6th overall, we had some excellent individual performances. Lucy Chapman, Abbey Gillam and Jackson Gray all achieved the highest total point score in their respective age groups. This was the second year in a row that Abbey Gillam has won her age group. Lucy Chapman won her age group winning one individual event and placing in the top 5 in 4 other events. Three individual records and one relay record was broken by our athletes on the day with two record times being achieved whilst placing second.

Jessica Bowlay achieved a new record in the 18 Girls Shot Put throwing 9.10m, smashing the old mark by 0.5m.

Abbey Gillam achieved a new record of 5.06m beating the old mark of 4.86m. Abbey ran a record time whilst placing second in the 100m.

Alicia Kappler ran a time of 13.12s to beat the old mark of 13.17s in the 100m. She also ran a record time in the 200m whilst placing second.

The Open Boys Relay team consisting of Andrew Millen, Ashar Mirza, Mohit Srivastava and James van der Schyff, lived up to the hype built up by our Year 12 students, and maybe a little created by a certain sports coordinator, running a hot time of 45.07s to smash the old mark of 46.53s. This team is seriously fast. In the individual 100m & 200m events they took all three places on the podium. With fresher legs and smoother baton changes, they could shave more than a second off their time. The time they ran on Wednesday would have placed them 4th at the National (SSA) Athletics Championships last year. Watch this space for future results from these boys.

We also achieved a number of first places, which are listed below

Jessica Bowlay 18 years Discus & Shot Put Taylor Brady 16 years Long Jump

William Brown 13 years 100m & 200m Lucy Chapman 17 years Long Jump

Abbey Gillam 14 years Long Jump & High Jump Jackson Gray 12 years 200m, 800m & 1500m

Alicia Kappler 17 years 100m Andrew Millen 18 years 100m

Ashar Mirza 18 years Long Jump Kara Osgood 15 years Shot Put

Matt Ryan 18 years 1500m James van der Schyff 18 years 200m

Next week on Monday 3 September, 19 of our athletes will represent the College as part of the NASSA athletics team at the AICES athletics championships. We wish these students the very best as they represent their College with pride.

THANK YOU SPRING FAIR HELPERS!

The Spring Fair was held last Saturday and it turned out to be a gloriously sunny day! The Fair was quite busy all day with plenty of entertainment, stalls to browse through, and a BIG line at the BBQ and other Food Stalls. The kids were kept busy all day (actually we hardly saw most of them) as they enjoyed rides, face painting, temporary tattoos and henna tattoos, sand art, slime making, cupcake decorating and sports competitions just to name a few! Overall a great day was enjoyed by many families.

A huge THANK YOU goes to the Spring Fair Committee, parent helpers (mums and dads), teachers, staff and students who gave up their time to help, or perform at the Fair. We couldn’t do it without the help of so many people. These incredible people were extremely busy for most of the day and the Broughton Community spirit shone through as volunteers jumped in to lend a hand wherever they could.

Also a special mention of THANKS, goes to the students who ran a stall (Cupcake Decorating, Devonshire Tea, Wii & Playstation Zone, Sports Centre activities, Drink Stall. Hotdogs, BBQ, Face Painting, Henna Tattoos), helped serve at a stall, or manned the car park. Top job everyone! Your assistance was really appreciated.

Our early estimate is that we have raised approximately $20,000! A great achievement. There are just a few expenses still to be paid out so we hope to have a definite figure in the next week or two. The money raised will be put towards something to improve our school and facilities.

Children in the Junior School had the opportunity to purchase a Father’s Day present at the stall held this week. We would like to wish all Dads a HAPPY FATHER’S DAY for Sunday (although isn’t everyday Dad’s day?) and hope you enjoy your gift!
