Dave, I decided to put this together for you for your 50th birthday . . .not because you are a great coach . . .not because you are a great teacher . . .

but because you are a life-coach, a friend, and an inspiration to all of us.

Page 4: Happy 50th Dave Turnbull!

How can I even put it into a couple sentences Daniel! Mr. Turnbull has been my mentor since I was in kindergarten. He taught me one of the hardest lessons to learn: failure is only a means to success if you never stop believing in yourself.

- Brooke Bailey

Turnbull developed the “extra mile” - the workout program that inspired me to create the life I have now as a personal trainer, instructor and gym owner in hawaii. Thank you Turnbull for all your dedication and motivation you share with everyone you come in contact with.

- Ben Haynes

I am so grateful for the one year that you were my teacher and coach. You taught me the lessons of perseverance and hard work that I still use today not only in working out but in all of life’s challenges. Thank you and happy birthday! - Michelle Kaiser

Turnbull, thank you for always showing me support and teaching me what a genuinely nice human is. You helped me more than you’ll ever know, and for that I am externally grateful. Much love. - Naomi Smillie

Mr. Turnbull has affected my life very emotionally and physically. Freshman year, when I wanted to get into shape, he pushed me hard in the workouts and helped me plan a eating schedule. Because of him, I would never be where I am today. I love you Mr. Turnbull, thanks for all the support.

-Aubrey Clemans

“ “Turnbull, you have done nothing more than championed the kids that come in contact with you. You have more influence than you will ever know. Wether it is evident or not, you have called out the gold in hundreds of students including myself, making me want to push myself to be a better person. You truly were a blessing in my life! Happy birthday! -Joshua Griggs

Dave Turnbull will always be the best teacher I’ve ever had. - Adam Beskow

Coach Turnbull helped me develop into the man I am today. As a health teacher, he probably didn’t teach me anything about health that I couldn’t have learned from someone else. However, he helped me develop my confidence and public speaking. He taught life lessons by sharing his own. And then he told me that I should join track, that everyone should. Now I have a lifelong passion for the sport. I’m trying to develop a track & field program at the school I teach for. I’ve run half marathons and enjoy a healthy lifestyle, on and off. Dave Turnbull probably will faintly remember me, being the amazing man he is, but I didn’t give him much reason to. Although I graduated as one of the most insignificant athletes he ever recruited, Coach Turnbull is a significant character of my life story. I thank you for your service and dedication to the community, Dave. Happy Birthday! ~ Nathan A. Carnahan, Class of 2007

Turnbull, you where a huge influence to me when I was going to school at summit high school. You helped me through things that I thought I would never get through. You made me a stronger person and you picked me up when I thought I couldn’t walk anymore, and pushed me to limits I thought I could never reach in track and even in life. Here’s a huge happy birthday to the man who I consider a second dad! Always and forever Bull.

-Xoxo McKenna Eddy

It was so wonderful to see you this summer! Still can’t believe it’s been ten years, well really 14 since you made an impact on my life. I remember thinking, wow this teacher cares about us and treats us more like equals than anything else. It was refreshing then and still is today! Your classroom felt like a safe haven and I thank you for that! I was never a super star athlete, yet you pushed me like I could be, thank you for making a 5 foot nothing believe long job was for her! Haha! People still laugh when they hear that was my event. Then there’s the influence you have on my life today. Your posts on Facebook. You challenging your students to do something good like shoveling someone’s driveway. That’s amazing! May all of us who you continue to impact have half the drive to make a difference as you do and the world has to be a better place for our babies. I, also, pray that my little girl has teachers in her future that desire to change her world as you desired to change mine and the rest of the students you teach. Thank you for teaching more than curriculum, thank you for teaching character and life skills. May your birthday be your best yet!

- Melissa McDonald (Mangin)

Turnbull changed my life by accepting me into the track program my last year without question and, in the process, showing me that I could be a confident, happy, and healthy person during a time where I was really conflicted and unhappy about what was going to happen next in life. The dedication and caring he shows for all of his students created a welcoming, comfortable environment that really helped me flourish and become the much more confident person I am now. -Sarah Berge

To put into words, the impact and the instrumental role that you played in my young and impressionable life, is near impossible. You taught and helped me to be a better person, to make better choices, and to better those around me. You have helped to shape me into the person I am today, and it is difficult to imagine who I would have been without your guidance and example when I was young and stupid. You, Dave Turnbull, are one of the kindest and most caring individuals I have ever met, and it is my pleasure to now call you my friend. I love that you DJ’ed our wedding, have been apart of my now adult life, and I look forward to our next encounter over beers with you! Happiest Birthday wishes to an amazing person. May 50 treat you well; Here is to 50 more. Cheers! - Beth Lewis (Olsen)

What Turnbull meant to me was more than I believe he realized. It went well beyond his role as a teacher, he was my coach, my mentor, and my friend even to this day. The amount of positive influence that he had on my life both in high school and even to this day has helped guide and shape me into the man that I am today. Through family issues, personal struggles, and athletic achievements Bull was always there. I am blessed to have had such an amazing mentor and role model in my life, and I can only hope to continue to make him proud as a friend, an athlete, a coach, and a man. -Drew Rivera

Turnbull helped me realize how important good health and teamwork are to being happy and successful in life and everything you do. I have been inspired to make so many positive changes in my life because of him and continue striving to improve as a person. -Jeffrey Chavez

Dave, there truly aren’t enough words, nor do I possess the eloquence to define how you have affected me, but it was you who introduced me to what hard work truly was, the direct avenue from motivation to accomplishments, but beyond all else how to simply be the best person I can day in and day out. You have touched thousands of lives, and I have had the pleasure of seeing it both as your athlete and a fellow coach. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Your compassion and love for everyone around you is infectious. Happy 50th, and I Love ya.

-Nate Crabtree

I distinctly remember you as a PE coach as a young kid. I was god-awful at basketball. I literally scored 1 point all year... a free throw. I missed the first but you yelled a few pointers at me before I took the second and sure enough, it drained it. You always encouraged and gave me chances to improve. I’m thankful for you and other coaches throughout my life that taught me to work hard to achieve goals and stay healthy. Something that has carried into my life and my family’s (married + 3 kinds) today. Thank you and happy birthday!

-Sam DeLay

Dave showed me what commitment means and no matter how good you think you are, practice your trade and you can still get better. -Zach Lacovics

Dave Turnbull has changed the way I look at life. Teaching each student athlete to look at life in every great way possible. He has positively influenced students to never give up, those students then become state champions 1 year later! -Cody Buckendorf

Good morning friends! I’m thankful for all of you and the incredible life I get to live. Some people go forever without feeling fulfilled. I get that feeling every day from my students and athletes. My prayer for you is that you can seek out what makes you truly happy, remove the barriers to keep you from that happiness and live your life to the fullest! Speaking of living...getting ready to take Noah to Thanksgiving day Football practice. Go Storm!

“ “Happy Birthday, Turnbull!!!! I am forever grateful for everything you’ve done for me during my time in Oregon. Even though I was only there for one year, I was able to build an everlasting relationship with you and Summit, and love to look at all the success stories that have come out of the school and the program since. I have such fond memories of my time there, especially the time I was the only one left on the track, doing 200s in the snow, with you there to push me and lead me to my state title I wouldn’t have been able to do any of this without you, and I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it wasn’t for you! Thanks for everything, and I hope you have the most wonderful of days for your birthday!!!! Love you forever, and I can’t wait to come back to Oregon, and hopefully coach alongside you one day - Suni Ta

“ “Hey Dave, Happy Birthday Dave. When we started at Summit High, nobody thought we could compete at the highest level. We had no seniors and almost no juniors. We were just a bunch of pip squeaks trying to compete with all the big schools in Oregon. You were the first to establish a tradition of excellence in athletics that set the tone for all the success that Summit has had. You dared us to be great when none of us thought it was possible. But it didn’t stop at the track. I don’t remember as much as I should from high school, but one thing that stuck with me is your philosophy on trust. That you will trust anyone and everyone unconditionally until they break that bond. I remember thinking that was so opposite of everything I had ever heard, mostly that trust had to be earned. You flipped that concept on it’s head and it made a lot of sense to me. What a better way it is to live you life expecting the best in everyone you meet. That positive outlook is just one of many great gifts you gave us at Summit. Thank you for everything and tell Mac hi for me! Happy Birthday! - John Torsey““

John, Nate, Aaron and Chris, I was thinking of you guys today as I was preparing for vacation. You guys have given me so many wonderful memories! I know it may seem like a weird time to be thanking you, but I just thought I’d take a moment! I still smile every time I think of your “pre-race” baton routine! I wish I had it on film!

-Turnbull July 3, 2014

So...I remember the administration downtown telling me we could only have five coaches as our team would be small the first year. 140 athletes in year one! I guess we didn’t care we were a “small” school! - Turnbull February 2006

Happy 50th birthday Dave! I didn’t know you so well in high school when I was at Summit, so you may not even remember me. However, I knew a lot of people at Summit who spoke very highly of you, and I know that you were something of a mentor or friend to a lot of students during my time there, and probably still are. Personally, I remember you being a musician (a guitar player like myself) and I remember you DJing the school dances. I was friends with Micah Depper, who was pretty close to you, and he and I started a make-shift band for battle of the bands and you lent me your beautiful guitar for a song or two. It’s amazing that I still remember that, but I do remember you having a generous spirit. So thanks for the guitar, man. Happy birthday!
