Hawaii is the happiest state and Louisiana the gloomiest, according to a University of Vermont study that looked at how often positive and negative words appeared in millions of tweets across the country. While tourism and context variables make this an imperfect measure of the happiness of a state’s residents, results were similar to previous wellbeing surveys. Socioeconomic factors that influence happiness in the U.S., such as poverty, unemployment and government resources, also account for some of the variation in life satisfaction levels in countries around the world.
